Sunni official predicts upsurge in resistance attacks
niqash
The Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq (AMSI), a grouping of Iraqi scholars aiming to represent the country’s Sunnis, was founded in 2003. AMSI says it opposes the “U.S occupation,” supports resistance against it (while condemning indiscriminate attacks on civilians) and calls the current political process illegitimate. Niqash met AMSI spokesman, Sheikh Mohammed Bashar al-Faydhi, to discuss AMSI’s position on current developments. Al-Faydhi reiterated that there could be no real national reconciliation so long as the U.S occupation continues and suggested that armed resistance is on the rise…

Clash of Civilizations, Europe and the Israeli Colonial War on Gaza
Issam Aburaiya for the Alternative Information Center (AIC)
The atrocious war that the State of Israel launched on Gaza (December 2008-January 2009) is just the latest incarnation of the Jewish-colonial settler project in Palestine. It also goes without saying that this project has been always animated by and interwoven with cultural practices and representations. “Ccultures,” as Thomas eloquentlystates, “are not simply ideologies that mask, or rationalize forms of oppression that are external to them; they also expressive and constitutive of colonial relationships in themselves,” to put it otherwise, “has always, equally importantly and deeply, been a cultural process; its discoveries and trespasses are imagined and energized through signs, metaphors and narratives; even what would seem purest moments of profit and violence have been mediated and enframed structures of meaning.” …

Gaza Aftermath (6) “The only BMW shop in Gaza.”
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
Nasser Al ‘Amoudi, with his biker’s jacket and sunglasses, embodies the essence of a car enthusiast. For years he has been the proud owner of the only BMW spare parts shop in the Gaza Strip. People would travel from every corner to purchase second hand parts from his shop. Now Nasser’s workshop and garage, which were worth $300,000 before the Israeli army destroyed them during their latest offensive, lie in tatters, and his financial security has gone… During the offensive, while Nasser sheltered in his home in Shati refugee camp with his wife and three children, Israeli fighter jets, helicopters, naval vessels, and ground tanks pounded Salateen. His garage and workshop were levelled by Israeli military bulldozers around the 14 of January 2009…

An Arab summit in Baghdad – a weird event
Roads to Iraq
… Why it was a wise decision to exclude Iraq from hosting the upcoming Arab summit? Maliki noticed that Arabs were not totally enthusiasts about this issue. Jordanian writer Nikola Nasir sees more reasons: It would be a historical event, a non-Arab (Talabani) to be the president of the biggest Arab institution.
President Jalal Talabani built his historic glory on the separation from the Arab world, and did not hesitate to welcome the invaders. Arabs are now in dispute on who is the strategic enemy, whether it is Israel or Iran, they should notice the fact that Talabani and his separatist movement have a historical relations with both, against the Arabs…

Children Of Darkness – Killing ‘Them’
Media Lens
On March 23, BBC online reported another bloody day in Iraq:”It was the second bomb attack in Iraq on Monday, with an earlier explosion near the capital. Baghdad, killing at least eight people. “The BBC’s Hugh Sykes, in Baghdad, says al-Qaeda have launched several attacks in Diyala since losing support in other parts of Iraq.” The foe, naturally, was the global bad guy, “al-Qaeda”. Thirty years ago the BBC would have declared them “Communists” or “Marxists”. We wrote to the BBC’s “man in Baghdad” the same day…

Iran, US find common cause on Afghanistan
by Rory Mulholland, AFP
US President Barack Obama’s administration had its first direct contact with Iran Tuesday at a conference on Afghanistan’s future where they found common cause on rebuilding the war-torn nation. But, in a sign that long-time foes Tehran and Washington are far from reconciled, Iran warned that the planned US troop surge in Afghanistan would fail to crush the Taliban-led insurgency there. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said top American and Iranian officials met briefly at the international conference in The Hague on stabilising Afghanistan. “In the course of the conference today, our special representative for Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke, had a brief and cordial exchange with the head of the Iranian delegation,” she told reporters…

Waiting For The World To Answer
Ayman T. Quader
It was an ordinary morning December 2008. Children were playing and having fun. They were digging between the rocks to get some space for their childhood. This is the story of Ahmad , a little boy without sin who was killed on that morning. Ahmad was known among his friends as lively, bustling boy (…) “We are an extended family living in a house that comprises four floors. My family and I live in the second and my father in the first floor” says Ahmad’s father. When he noticed that Ahmad and his sister Mariam were going to play in the garden of the house, the father tried to stop him as the family was waiting for Mohamed, the older brother to take an early lunch. But his attempt was in vain. “It was like an earthquake hitting our house and every thing was shaking” said the father. Doors and windows were broken, too. The Father tried to find out what had happened outside and searched for the source of the terrible noise he had heard. A cloud of smoke was covering the sun. “There was nothing else to do than to assure myself about the family as another explosion shocked the nearby building. I tried to make sure that everyone was inside the house, and then I convinced myself to feel safe.” Suddenly Mariam cried out: “Daddy, daddy, Ahmad, Ahmad…” The little girl Mariam broke out in tears, terribly afraid about her brother. “Her shouts froze my body” said the father. Ahmad was found under the rubble of stones at the entrance of the house…

Betrayed Awakening
Moon of Alabama
Maliki sent out his army to capture Awakening leaders no longer payed by the U.S.: The arrest of Raad Ali, who helped the Americans stabilize the west Baghdad neighborhood of Ghazaliya, came to light Sunday, five days after the Iraqi army picked him up in a midnight raid, his aides said. The U.S. is actively helping in this (…) Parviz thinks that this is part of a U.S.-Iran rapprochement. That is certainly possible. The U.S. may have decided to defer to Iran in Iraq for cooperation in Afghanistan and to generally lower level the hostility level. …

US Government website now offers ‘suicide warning signs’ for victims of recession

The Iran-U.S. Rapprochement Dance
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
It is customary in an Iranian wedding ceremony, when asked, “Do you take this man?”, for the bride to not answer “Yes!” the first time the question is posed. By tradition, the bride, but not the groom, is asked the signifying question three times. To show her proper upbringing, she must wait until the third time before answering ‘Yes!’ Otherwise, she may come off seeming too eager, not ladylike, not coy enough, aggressive or too enthusiastic (implying further bad things), way too much in a hurry, not able or patient enough to observe the proper decorum. Not good. The Obama administration’s recent overtures for a reconciliation with Iran have come in the form of sweet talk of opening up of fisted hands, accompanied with a quotation from the wily and clever Saadi, one of our more popular poets (1184-1283?). The initial Iranian responses to these Obama overtures are starting to resemble the coy Iranian bride’s ladylike silence upon first being asked if she would take the man…

Al-Maliki Sectarian Government Trying to Eradicate The lawmaker Mohamed Al-Daini Politically and Physically
Mohamed Al-Daini Press Office
The spokesman of Al-Maleki security forces , Kasim Atta, announced yesterday that it became impossible to find the Deputy Al-Daini . The Ministry of Interior said the same ,and some dishonest Iraqi satellite channels announced that Al-Daini was abroad . The aim of this disinformation campaign is to regard Al-Dayni as a missing person in order to eliminate him politically and physically. But all evidences prove that Al- Daini is under arrest by Al-Maleki Government . On the day that Al- Daini `s plane was ordered to turn back to Baghdad Airport ,the Deputy ,Miss Maysoon Al-Damalooji ,who was with him on the airplane ,informed the Media that Al- Daini was taken from the plane by security force to an unknown destiny. At the same time ,Kasim Atta himself declared that Al-Daini was arrested . Also , the semi official Al-Iraqia Channel announced ,in breaking news , that Al-Daini was arrested . Palestine’s Island Paradise, Now With a Word from its Creator
Strange maps
..”Maybe posting the full map would help to take it for what it is, i.e. an illustration of the West Bank’s ongoing fragmentation based on the (originally temporary) A/B/C zoning which came out of the Oslo process, still valid until now. To make things clear, areas ‘under water’ strictly reflect C zones, plus the East Jerusalem area, i.e. areas that have officially remained under full Israeli control and occupation following the Agreements. These include all Israeli settlements and outposts as well as Palestinian populated areas.” Mr Boussac took advantage of the resulting archipelago effect “to use typical tourist maps codes (mainly icons) to sharpen the contrast between the fantasies raised by seemingly paradise-like islands and the Palestinian Territories grim reality.” The map does have a strong vacationy vibe to it – but whether that is because of the archipelago-shaped subject matter, or due to the cheerful colour scheme is a matter for debate…

Let The World See Israel’s True, Ugly Face
KHALED AMAYREH
There is no doubt that the new Israeli government, led by Benyamin Netanyahu, honestly reflects the collective mindset of the Israeli Jewish Zionist society. True, there are Israelis who are averse to racism and fascism, but these are unfortunately very few in numbers and their influence is almost negligible. Indeed, a fleeting glance at the composition of the new Israeli cabinet reveals an extremist coalition of war criminals, pathological liars, racist thugs , and hateful religious maniacs who inhale and exhale hatred 24 hours per day…

Karzai accused of bid to ‘legalise rape’
By Jerome Starkey in Kabul
Afghanistan’s President, Hamid Karzai, has signed a law which “legalises” rape, women’s groups and the United Nations warn. Critics claim the president helped rush the bill through parliament in a bid to appease Islamic fundamentalists ahead of elections in August. In a massive blow for women’s rights, the new Shia Family Law negates the need for sexual consent between married couples, tacitly approves child marriage and restricts a woman’s right to leave the home, according to UN papers seen by The Independent… The law regulates personal matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance and sexual relations among Afghanistan’s minority Shia community. “It’s about votes,” Ms Karokhail added. “Karzai is in a hurry to appease the Shia because the elections are on the way.”..

Boycott, Surrender or War
By Jeremy Salt – Ankara
…There is no peace process. There never was. There is only a war process. The fictions of the Oslo process, Madrid, the Declaration of Principles, Wye River, the Hebron procotocol, have all been exposed. The Palestinians are infinitely worse off than before. Israel has been given numerous opportunities to make peace with the Arab world at the cost of retreating from the territories taken in 1967 and dealing seriously with the refugee issue. It has ignored them all. It now has a government that has no intention of withdrawing from the West Bank, from East Jerusalem or from the Golan Heights, a government that is speeding ahead with the expansion of settlements and the destruction of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem…

They Will Not Go Down: Celebrating Life and Land Day
Eva Bartlett | In Gaza
Less than two months have passed since the end of Israel’s grisly war on Gaza. Not a house has been re-built (there is no cement; Israel continues to ban its entry into Gaza), thousands are displaced or sheltering in an overcrowded relative’s house or renting a scarcely-available apartment. The aid has stockpiled on the other side of crossings into Gaza, many trucks being sent back or expired. And the pain of loss, let alone of seeing family members -children, siblings, parents-burned by white phosphorous, being murdered or left to bleed to death is still unbearably fresh. Yet Palestinians are trying to move on, again, while dealing with a siege which has only tightened post-destruction of Gaza. Last week Palestinian youths held a concert in the burnt-out theatre in one of the al Quds hospital buildings, attacked and seriously damaged by Israel during its war on Gaza [more than 14 hospitals and medical centres were bombed and damaged by Israeli army, 2 clinics were destroyed, 44 other damaged, and 23 emergency workers and medics were killed]…

Maimed 10-year-old angry at Israel over cluster bombs
Mohammed Zaatari
From his hospital room in the Marjayoun Public Hospital, 10-year-old Mohammad Jamal Abdel- Aal says he will not forgive nor forget Israel for ripping off his limbs. Abdel-Aal’s left leg and right hand got amputated on Sunday after a cluster bomb, left over from the summer 2006 war with Israel, exploded while he was playing in one of the fields near his home in the southern town of Hilta. “I am not able to play anymore,” Abdel-Aal told The Daily Star on Sunday. In the last 72 hours of the 34-day July-August war, Israel dropped around four million cluster bombs all across southern Lebanon. The main concentration of unexploded ordinance is found in villages and fields north of the Littani River…

British hand off to US in oil-rich southern Iraq
By KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writer Kim Gamel, Associated Press Writer
Britain turned over coalition command of the oil-rich south to the United States on Tuesday in the first step toward withdrawing virtually all British troops from Iraq by July. The pomp-filled ceremony marked the beginning of the end of an often-troubled British mission. The Iraqis have accused the British of merely standing by while Shiite militias wielded control of the country’s second-largest city of Basra for years…

Beyond Here Lies Nothing: Surging Further Into the Abyss
Chris Floyd
…But that is not what is happening. The long, hard, thankless effort that it would take to roll back the bloated global empire of bases and curtail the power of the oligarchy (for you can’t do one without the other) has not even begun. Obama is not trying to wrest the ship of state toward a new direction; he is deliberately and willingly continuing on the same disastrous, destructive course as before. Every day carries us further and further away from the shore, and makes any effort to reverse course that much harder — if indeed, it is still possible at all…

Alan Dershowitz: The Relentless Israeli Apologist
Russell Cole
On January 4th 2008, I happened to stumble across CNN’s Larry King, who was mediating a debate between a fairly moderate representative of the Arab American institute, James Zogby, and the relentless Israeli apologist, Alan Dershowitz. Needless to say, the 1400 or so Palestinians who had suffered the fate rhetorically sanitized under the rubric, ‘collateral damage,’ were not the victims of the Israelis, according to the logic of Dershowitz; rather, they were victims of Hamas. After all, Hamas members failed to extricate themselves from the densely populated territory, wherein Hamas provided social services, in order to line up in some type of military formation, so that they would become the unmistakable target for the Israelis. Therefore, the mounting civilian casualties were the fault of Hamas, because the organization neglected to cooperate with its adversaries…

Has Washington lost Lebanon? (Part I)
Franklin Lamb
Henry Kissinger, among others in the US foreign policy establishment, is reportedly aghast at how quickly and thoroughly the Bush administration botched US Middle East policy and handed much of the Near East and South Asia to Iran. Not just Iraq, Afghanistan, (plus the Af-Pak region) some of the countries bordering the Arab Gulf (increasingly referred to as the Persian Gulf) but the low hanging fruit of Palestine, ripe for picking. As Iran rapidly expands its influence to South America, Asia and Africa, many observers in Lebanon think that their country may be next. Frankly, it is beginning to look that way…

One State for Palestine Conference – ‘Israel’s massacres are the price of maintaining a Jewish state’
Mondoweiss
The second day of the One State for Palestine/Israel: A Country for All Its Citizens? conference had a much more ominous tone than Day 1. It focused on the long road to building a one state solution – from the obstacles of the current moment to the challenges of building the movement to get us there. One of the reoccurring themes of the day was the incredible amount of violence that the speakers expect Israel to use to maintain the status quo…Ali Abunimah said this best: Even to maintain the status quo, Israel would have to carry out escalating Gaza-style massacres on a regular basis in an attempt to terrorize and subdue the Palestinian population. In 2009, if you support Israel’s claim to be a Jewish state, you must also in practice support its massacres, because those are the price of maintaining it. …

End the Occupation!
The Iraq Solidarity Campaign
Since the occupation of Iraq began in 2003, over one million Iraqi people have died as a result of the actions by the British and American governments. The occupation of Iraq has also resulted in the displacement of over four million Iraqi citizens, with millions more living in poverty and total destitution. The illegal invasion has meant that there are over five million Iraqi children who are now orphans as a result of the conflict, along with over four million women who have since been made widows. Each Iraqi person is living a life of uncertainty because of the false claims of weapons of mass destruction and the outrageous lie that Saddam Hussain was connected to the Al-Qaida attack on the Twin Towers…
