Mohammed al-Daini is Still Missing
Dal LaMagna
It has been 19 days since I first reported the situation of Iraqi Member of Parliament, Mohammed al-Daini. His nephew and bodyguard had been picked up. Then using their confessions, the Iraq Government charged Mohammed with being responsible for the April 12, 2007 suicide bombing in the Parliament cafeteria. Mohammed was en route by plane to Amman when his plane was ordered to return. He was taken off the plane and then disappeared…As was noted by Robert Fisk and evidenced by the work I did with Mohammed al-Daini, his mission in life was to expose human rights abuses in Iraqi prisons. About two months ago, he sent me a video in which he interviews several torture victims. He aired this video in Geneva…

Obama announces escalation of war in Afghanistan, Pakistan
Alex Lantier
President Barack Obama on Friday announced a major escalation of the US war in Afghanistan and its further extension into Pakistan. His statement was presented as the outcome of a review of US strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan involving the State Department, the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies, all of whose top officials were on the platform behind Obama when he gave his remarks. The policy Obama announced represents a massive increase in military violence not only in Afghanistan, but also in Pakistan. Significantly, Obama devoted the first half of his remarks to Pakistan, signaling that a major conclusion of his administration’s strategic review is to expand the war more aggressively beyond the borders of Afghanistan…

STOP EXECUTIONS OF GAY IRAQIS
IRAQI LGBT
Urgent action is needed to halt the execution of 128 prisoners on death row in Iraq. Many of those awaiting execution were convicted for the ‘crime’ of homosexuality, according to IRAQI-LGBT, a UK based organisation of Iraqis supporting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Iraq. According to Ali Hili of IRAQI-LGBT, the Iraqi authorities plan to start executing them in batches of 20 from this week. IRAQI-LGBT urgently requests that the UK Government, Human Rights Groups and the United Nations Human Rights Commission intervene with due speed to prevent this tragic miscarriage of justice from going ahead…

PCHR Contests Distortion of Gaza Strip Death Toll
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) contest figures presented by the Israeli Coordination and Liaison Authority for the Gaza Strip which claim that 1,370 Palestinians were killed in the course of Israel’s 23 day military offensive on the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Coordination Authority claim that 600 of the dead were combatants, and that 309 civilians were killed in the attack. They have yet to classify 320 Palestinians. PCHR regards this as a deliberately manipulative attempt to distort the reality of the offensive, and to disguise Israel’s illegal actions. Following extensive investigation and cross-checking, PCHR have determined that a total of 1,417 Palestinians died in the offensive. 926 were civilians, including 313 children and 116 women. 255 were non-combatant police officers. 236 combatants were killed, representing 16.7% of the total deaths.

Freedom Rider: Opposing Obama
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley
This weekend’s pitifully small peace demonstration in the nation’s capitol reveals a near-totally demobilized U.S. Left mired in such timidity and delusion, activists fear to mention Barack Obama’s name when denouncing the wars he so aggressively prosecutes. “The new president, who makes no secret of his intention to continue the previous administration’s war of terror, escaped serious scrutiny and the condemnation he deserves.” Forgetting that power concedes nothing without a demand, the Left shrinks from making real demands of the actual president in power. Six years ago, on March 20, 2003, the United States began its invasion and occupation of Iraq. Since that date more than one million Iraqis have died, four million are refugees, and 4,200 American soldiers have lost their lives. America committed a terrible crime against the Iraqi people and against all of humanity, a crime that continues until the present day. The occupation is ongoing, despite the election and inauguration of a new president. President Barack Obama always made it clear that he would never end the war, instead choosing to draw down the number of troops and always reserving the right to leave a “residual force.”

Obama Commits Himself To War
Moon of Alabama
Here is Obama’s new strategy for his ‘campaign against extremists who wish to do us harm’ or CAEWWTDUH (…) Short version: Let’s fight all Pashtuns and whoever helps them. This in Afghanistan but especially in Pakistan. Likely outcome: The Pashtuns in Afghanistan will continue to fight against the ‘western’ occupation and each increase in ‘western’ troops will automatically increase their numbers too…

They can’t take that away from me: “settlers” stealing Palestinian land from under our feet
Reham Alhelsi
As I stood on the roof and watched Jerusalem stretch in front of me, with the sun reflecting on the golden Dome, I felt angry and felt how unfair the world is. I was born in Jerusalem, went to school there and practically grew up there knowing almost every corner, every street and every alley in it. I have more memories in Jerusalem than any other place in the world, all cherished ones. But now, I am not allowed into the city anymore because I am Palestinian…

The ‘New’ Strategy – Did Obama Expand the War Into Pakistan?
Is The Real Change a Massive Escalation Into Pakistan?
Jason Ditz
When President Barack Obama unveiled his “comprehensive, new strategy” for the war in Afghanistan it struck many how decidedly old most of the strategy looked. A vague justification for throwing more money and troops at the seemingly endless war, bundled with posturing about how vital the war’s success ultimately would be. But is that the whole story? Was the much-heralded new strategy just about polishing up the same old escalation in Afghanistan and selling it as a change? Perhaps the real novelty in this plan takes place outside of Afghanistan, in neighboring Pakistan…

Netanyahu and the Future of the Peace Process
By Ramzy Baroud
It seems that the Palestinian-Israeli peace process is in serious jeopardy. This is the immediate impression one gleans from media reports from Israel. Unlike Israel’s Kadima and Labour party “moderates” prime minister-designate Benyamin Netanyahu is widely seen as an obstacle to negotiations aimed at facilitating a two-state solution. The media stories, however, are riddled with misconceptions and dotted with false assumptions. While Netanyahu is indeed a right-wing ideologue his position on issues pertinent to the peace process — if, indeed, it is possible to speak of such a thing, which I doubt — hardly differs from his predecessors. Israel continues with its military onslaughts and illegal settlement expansion while the Palestinian Authority of Mahmoud Abbas continues with isolating Hamas in Gaza and maintaining its own rule in the West Bank…

Capitalist Incarnate: My interview with a vampire
Jason Miller
While it’s a commonly held belief that “everyone has a nonbiological twin somewhere in the world,” I wonder if we all have an antithetical “anti-twin” as well. Because I recently met someone who could easily be mine. Ironically enough, it was at the public library, one of my favorite haunts. It’d been a particularly cold winter and the mercury had finally inched up to where it was light jacket weather, so I decided to spend a day prowling around an area called The Country Club Plaza, a Kansas City “landmark.” Picture the Plaza as a physical incarnation of the spiritual realm where all the souls of the “good” members of the bourgeoisie will transcend once they’ve run themselves to death in the race to acquire the most toys…
