Afghanistan and Iraq: War Crimes Against Children ascribed to former President Bush
Sherwood Ross
… The best kept secret of the Bush’s war crimes is that thousands of children have been imprisoned, tortured, and otherwise denied rights under the Geneva Conventions and related international agreements. Yet both Congress and the media have strangely failed to identify the very existence of child prisoners as a war crime. In the Islamic world, however, there is no such silence. Indeed, the prophet Mohammed was the first to counsel warriors not to harm innocent children. From jailing children together with adults in prisons where they were raped to failing to notify their parents of their arrest, the U.S. committed numerous war crimes against children in Afghanistan and Iraq, a new book on President Bush states…

Mother Blues…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…today, in Iraq and the rest of the Arab world, the 21st of March is Mother’s Day (…).If there is anywhere on this globe where the Mother has been mutilated as much as in Iraq ? Is there anywhere on this earth, where the Mother has been raped as much as in Iraq ? In there anywhere on this world where the Mother has been subjected to so much trauma and grief in such a short space of time, as in Iraq ? Is there anywhere on the face of this planet, where the Mother has been hunted, gunned down, abducted, tortured, disappeared as much as in Iraq ? Is there anywhere else where this happens in the name of Freedom and Democracy ? TELL ME and TELL ME NOW!…

I committed massive crimes against humanity and all i got was this lousy t-shirt
Marcy Newman, Body on the line
On thursday United Nations special rapporteur Richard Falk released his report on the war crimes and crimes against humanity unleashed by Israeli terrorists against Palestinians in Gaza…a day after Falk released his report a series of testimonies by Israeli terrorists were published in Ha’aretz. Because Ha’aretz is a newspaper of Israeli terrorists, of course, they try to pretend like these are just a few bad apples (anyone remember how the U.S. covered Abu Ghraib?)…

Palestinian Mothers: Homage to Steadfastness and Sacrifice
Reham Alhelsi
When the women came and told her to leave what she was doing and come and sit in front of the house with them, my grandmother knew what was to come. They sat outside and didn’t talk much. My uncle had been shot in the chest by the IOF that afternoon, and was at that moment being operated. He was in a critical condition, the doctors had told the men who had brought him to the hospital. Some were sent back home to prepare the family for the news and to prepare the refugee camp to welcome the hero, in case the worst happened. Although hope dies last, it was a necessity to prepare everything for a quick funeral and a quick burial. The Israeli army had been known to take bodies of Palestinian martyrs and steal their organs without the Palestinian family’s consent. The organs would then be given to Israelis who needed them. So a Palestinian killed by the IOF, mostly for no reason at all or for defending his country, would be labelled as terrorist by Israel and the biased media, while his organs would be used to save Israeli lives. In other countries, stealing the organs of dead people is considered a crime, but as usual, it doesn’t apply to Israel..

On the jewish terrorist league
Marcy Newman, Body on the line
They call themselves the “Jewish Defense League,” (JDL) but this misnomer, like the “israeli defense forces” masks what they are really there to do: to murder, steal, and cover it all up. the jdl, fortunately, continues to be on the united states terrorist watch list for its history of attacks on american soil…Why do i bring this all up? because the JDL in Canada, which seems to be far more active than in the U.S. of late, has issued threats on television to anyone supporting george galloway’s lecture tour, which they had a role in canceling by getting the canadian government to ban galloway from setting foot on canadian soil. live on television some terrorist from the JDL threatened such people, including churches sponsoring his speaking engagements…

Israel stops Jerusalem celebrations
AlJazeera.net
Israeli police have prevented Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem from holding events to mark the city’s designation as “capital of Arab culture” for 2009. About 20 Palestinians were detained in and around East Jerusalem on Saturday, but there were no reports of violence, Shmulik Ben-Ruby, a police spokesman, said. Police reinforcements were deployed around the city and barricades were set up on routes to the al-Aqsa mosque, Islam’s third holiest site. Witnesses said that flags and banners associated with the event were confiscated. At one school, police and soldiers burst balloons in the colours of the Palestinian flag that the children were trying to release to mark the event…

The Palestinian Struggle Between Reconstructing Puppets and Reconstructing Resistance
Part I: Reconstructing Puppets
By Dina Jadallah-Taschler
…How can any reasonable Palestinian believe the promises being made by the international community or by their own leaders? Maintaining the fiction of the efficacy and contributions of the PA is part of the problem. It hides the fact that the Palestinian “government” is no such thing. It is the equivalent of a comprador class from colonial times and, not unlike neighboring states, is the Palestinian version of the regional neo-colonial remnants that continue to function as extensions of Western hegemonic control…

The Big Takeover
The global economic crisis isn’t about money – it’s about power. How Wall Street insiders are using the bailout to stage a revolution
MATT TAIBBI
…As complex as all the finances are, the politics aren’t hard to follow. By creating an urgent crisis that can only be solved by those fluent in a language too complex for ordinary people to understand, the Wall Street crowd has turned the vast majority of Americans into non-participants in their own political future. There is a reason it used to be a crime in the Confederate states to teach a slave to read: Literacy is power. In the age of the CDS and CDO, most of us are financial illiterates. By making an already too-complex economy even more complex, Wall Street has used the crisis to effect a historic, revolutionary change in our political system — transforming a democracy into a two-tiered state, one with plugged-in financial bureaucrats above and clueless customers below…

Iraq’s most ancient sect in need of protection to escape extinction
By Kareem Zair, Azzaman
The Mandeans, the world’s only surviving representatives of Gnosticism, have been living in southern Iraq since the 1st century A.D. But their existence is under serious threat. Prior to the U.S. invasion, more than 30,000 lived in Iraq, mainly along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their tributaries. “We fear for our lives particularly following several fatwas in which we are denied the status of the People of the Book,” said Sheikh Sattar al-Hilou, the Mandeans’ chief in Iraq. The term ‘the People of the Book’ refers to non-Muslims who have been accorded special protection under Islamic Jurisprudence.Religious militias are using these fatwas, or religious decrees, against the Mandeans to force them to enter Islam, Hilou said. He said he was not aware of anyone of his people converting to Islam despite threats of death. “As a result more than 22,000 of my community have fled the country,” he added… Former leader Saddam Hussein was very fond of the sect and had constructed a modern shrine for the Mandeans on the banks of the Tigris River in Baghdad…

Iran rejects overture from US
Michael Theodoulou, Foreign Correspondent
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, moved with remarkable swiftness on Saturday to scotch any suggestion that the ball was now in Tehran’s court after the US president issued a surprise video appeal calling for a “new beginning” in relations with the Islamic Republic. Yet while dismissing Barack Obama’s offer of better ties as a mere “slogan”, he pledged that Iran would respond to any real policy shift made by Washington. Many ordinary Iranians welcomed the US president’s warmly worded, landmark overture on Friday as “fantastic news”… Apart from addressing popular opinion, Ayatollah Khamenei’s intervention was seemingly aimed at stemming divisions within the Iranian leadership between moderates and hardliners over how to respond to Washington’s olive branch…

Ahmad Chalabi Speaks
As’ad AbuKhalil, The Angry Arab News Service
Read this account of Ahmad Chalabi. What is interesting is that he is revealing his very close relations with the Iranian regime and its intelligence service as snuck into Iran as the US invaded. With him in those meetings with Iranian military and intelligence officials was none other than the democracy advocate (and poseur par excellence, Kanan Makiya)…

Gaza church accuses de facto government of banning Jerusalem Capital of Arab Culture events in Strip
Ma’an news
The de facto government in Gaza has banned celebrations of Al-Quds Capital of Arab Culture 2009 in the Strip, according to Father Manuel Musallam, pastor of the Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, on Saturday. Father Musallam told Ma’an that the de facto government called him on Friday and informed him that the celebrations he had planned at his church’s school must be held on another day…When the de facto government told him that he was planning a celebration in cooperation with Fatah, Father Musallam replied: “Jerusalem is higher than Fatah and Hamas and all the other factions; Jerusalem is not a possession of one person and it is greater than all other issues…Then they told me that participating in such celebrations was ‘sedition’ and insisted that I cancel.” He explained that planning such events is part of his job as head of the Christian World Department in Gaza and member of the Central Committee for Defending Jerusalem and the Holy Land on official decree by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The head of the church said he cancelled the event in order to “avoid troubles…

Arab identity under threat
Omar Karmi
There is one spot in Jerusalem’s Old City that is particularly illuminating. From there, above the spice market and amid the stone cupolas of the surrounding roofs, the modern layout of the city reveals itself and indicates a possible future. Below are the markets, traditionally three: one for spices, one for oil and one for clothes. Today, of course, with the exception of the spice market, most are mixed and almost anything is available. East of here lie the Muslim quarter, the largest and most populous in the Old City, and the Christian quarter. West, and up the hill Jerusalem is built on, lie the Armenian and Jewish quarters. The latter is built atop a superstructure to allow archaeologists to excavate the Roman city that lies at the bottom, metres below today’s city…

Israeli troops detail Gaza atrocities as demand grows for war crimes probe
Bill Van Auken
The publication of testimony by Israeli soldiers detailing atrocities in which they participated or that they witnessed has lent further weight to the growing demands for an international war crimes tribunal to investigate the three-week Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip last December and January. The testimony, published Thursday and Friday in the Israeli dailies Haaretz and Maariv, came from a group of soldiers and officers participating in a military training course at the Oranim Academic College in Tivon in February. The director of the program, Danny Zamir, invited them to discuss their experiences in Gaza. He recounted that he was “shocked” by what he heard, including reports of random shootings of unarmed civilians and generalized contempt for Palestinian life, and reported the matter to the Israeli Defense Forces command…

Chalabi says the CIA was expecting a Baathist coup against Saddam

…Following meetings in late 2002 in Iran that Chalabi says included himself, representatives of the Supreme Council, Barzani and Talabani, with senior Iranian military and political officials, there was then a meeting in London in December 2002. Iraqi Sunnis keep a wary eye on Iran
By Hazim al-Shara and Muayid al-Kinani
Reaction of the recent visit by former Iranian President leader Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani revealed sharp differences among Iraqis over their attitudes towards Iran. Rafsanjani was warmly greeted by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Shia Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the country’s most influential cleric, during the visit. In sharp contrast, Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, a Sunni, refused to even attend the welcoming ceremony. Hashemi’s Iraqi Islamic Party issued a statement saying Rafsanjani was “unwelcome.” Of course, Rafsanjani’s visit not only represented the deepening ties between Iran and Iraq, it also reopened the old wound of the Iran-Iraq war. Rafsanjani served as Iran’s parliamentary speaker throughout the entire war – from 1980 to 1989 – and was acting commander-in-chief of Iran’s forces during the final stages of the conflict. That explains why demonstrators in the largely Sunni province of Anbar labeled Rafsanjani a “killer of Iraqis.” Abdul-Kareem Al-Enzi, a spokesman for Prime Minister Maliki’s Dawa party, said, however, that such visits by Iranian leaders would serve to eventually heal the scars created by the Iran-Iraq war. He blamed former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime for fueling conflict with its neighbors, and argued that Iran was now an ally of Iraq. “Iran was the first to support changing (Saddam’s rule) in Iraq, and it was the first country to open its embassy in Iraq,” he said…

Our ambassador to Poland
Khalid Amayreh
…According to reports from Warsaw, our ambassador to Poland (I don’t want to mention his name) threw a farewell party in honor of his Zionist friend, the Israeli ambassador to Poland David Pylgaeim (sic) on the occasion of the latter’s end of term. I don’t have all the details of this most dishonorable behavior on the part of the ambassador who on several occasions denounced Palestinian resistance to Israeli Nazism as “violence and terror.” However, if these reports which I have received from reliable sources in Warsaw are proven accurate, then the PLO which claims to be the “sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people” should take a swift decision to sack and punish this man…
