Message in a Bottle…
Layla Anwar, Uncensored Arabwomanblues
…I stare through my kitchen window…The radio is on. A warm voice with a familiar accent speaks through…breaking the lonely stillness, the lonely lull…A familiar accent that reminds me of love and firmly rooted, swaying palm trees… She says : “I am ill, I don’t even dare utter a sound…that would mean more expenses, doctor’s fees…we need this money, my husband and kids are more important…so I carry my illness in silence…” Another familiar accent creeps through: “ I lost my home, my parents, my siblings, I was tracked like an animal…I had to flee…” And another one : “ My husband and father, they disappeared…they threatened to rape and kill me. Now am here…I am alone…I have no one but God…” And another one : “ We have never had it so bad…If I return, they will just kill me…so simple…so easy…” And another one : “ Even here, I still feel terrified…you know how they do things to us Iraqis…It is so easy for them…they know we have no support…” And a few more familiar accent added themselves and they all came and inhabited my kitchen…We gathered around my table, like ghosts. Us, and Them dancing on the wall across my window… A male voice reporting broke through… “It is a catastrophe, a human catastrophe. Someone should tell the world. Iraqi women are in the abyss…”…

Obama’s Afghan policy & Pak crisis
Ali Ashraf Khan
The US war in Iraq & Afghanistan has been a major reason for the financial drain in the budget, but President Obama’s promise to plug all this for ever may not bring any change. He has already ordered the closure of torture camps in Guantanamo and elsewhere, while the B’aagram torture camp in Afghanistan is allowed to operate with few hundred illegal detainees who were reported as missing persons in the Pakistani courts, which is perhaps one of the reasons for on-going judicial crises. Then we saw a sudden shift in his commitment that he wants to further escalate the war on the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the plea that there are hideouts of those foreign terrorists who were first planted and promoted by Americans in their Jihad against Soviet forces in 1979, who are now bad guys because they are threatening the national security of America. When at the same time a peaceful Pakistan has been turned through external machinations and conspiracies ready to be declared a terrorist country to suit their colonization agenda, which Pakistanis have now realized after seeing the recent diplomatic race of foreign ambassadors meeting politicians on the issue of long march…

It’s All Good: Media Reports for Duty as Militarists Plan More Wars
Surely there is no one who still needs to be apprised of the fact that the New York Times is one of the chief organs of the American Empire, operating in a semi-official fashion to disseminate the intentions and wishes of our rulers. The fact that the paper also publishes some excellent reporting — and can even, on occasion, assume an adversarial stance against one faction of the elite or another — in no way undermines its essential function in the imperial power structure…

Taliban spokesman denies that Mullah Omar gave the green light to talks
“Such statements are baseless lies”
AFP
…Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi told AFP by telephone however: “We’ll not talk to anybody unless the invading foreign forces leave Afghanistan.” He had the same message in a round table discussion on private television late Saturday, in which he took part by phone, with two former members of the Taliban government also on the panel. Ahmadi also rejected a media report that the Taliban’s elusive leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, had given the green light to talks. “Such statements are baseless lies,” he said…

Gates Carries Over Iraq-WMD Lie
Melvin A. Goodman
In 1987, President Ronald Reagan nominated Robert Gates to be Director of Central Intelligence (DCI), but he was denied confirmation because a majority of members on the Senate Intelligence Committee believed he was lying about his knowledge and role in the Iran-Contra Affair. Iran-Contra independent counsel Lawrence Walsh “found insufficient evidence to warrant charging Robert Gates with a crime,” but he concluded that Gates had been “less than candid” about his knowledge of Oliver North’s illegal support for the Contras and the illegal diversion of funds from Iranian arms sales. In 1991, after being re-nominated by then-President George H.W. Bush, Gates survived the confirmation process to become DCI despite the opposition of more than 30 senators who also found Gates less than candid in discussing his role in the politicization of intelligence on the Soviet Union, Central America and Southwest Asia…

Iraq dossier emails ‘devastating’

Surely this is why the documents have been hidden for so long…

Afghan NATO supply terminal attacked in Pakistan
RIAZ KHAN, AP
Suspected militants attacked a Pakistani transport terminal from which supplies are sent to NATO troops in Afghanistan, burning dozens of vehicles and shipping containers, police said. Rising Taliban attacks have raised doubts about the reliability of critical supply routes through Pakistan, prompting the U.S. and NATO to seek alternatives. About 40 assailants struck the Pak-Afghan Container Terminal near the northwestern city of Peshawar before dawn Sunday, police and witnesses said…

Israeli War on Palestinian Olive
By Khalid Amayreh, IOL Correspondent
Israeli occupation forces and protected Jewish settlers are waging war on Palestinian olive orchards throughout the occupied West Bank, especially in areas contiguous to Jewish settlements. “Imagine watching the trees you planted and nurtured all your life being suddenly uprooted and destroyed by the callous blades of a huge caterpillar bulldozer,” weeps Abdullah al-Hurub, an elderly farmer from the village of Dir Samet, near the southern town of al-Khalil (Hebron). He has lost hundreds of olive trees to the Israeli separation wall, a mix of electronic fences and concrete walls Israel is building across the West bank…

A 16-strong group of the world’s most experienced investigators and judges have today (16 March) called for a full international investigation into alleged abuses of international law during the recent Gaza conflict. The call, supported by Amnesty International, is made in an open letter (full text below) to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as well as all members of the UN Security Council. US Eyewitness in Gaza: ‘As a world, we utterly failed the Palestinians of Gaza. We stood and watched them die and justified our own inaction’
Rose Mishaan
I went to Gaza with a group of lawyers to investigate violations of international law…We went to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. In the parking lot we saw bombed out, twisted skeletons of ambulances before we were hurried into the building to meet with doctors. Standing in the middle of a care unit, I saw a little boy, about 5 years old, hobble down the hallway, holding his mother’s hand. He had a leg injury and looked in pain. The doctors wanted to show us the white phosphorous cases, since we had asked about that. The doctor pointed to two rooms with patients we could talk to…

Abbas aide: Olmert remarks on peace failure “completely false”
Ma’an news
An aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Nabil Abu Rudeina, slammed assertions by Israel’s prime minister on Sunday as “completely false.” Earlier on Sunday, outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert blamed Palestinian leaders for the failure of the peace process during his term in office. “The proposals did not include conditions for the creation of an independent Palestinian state on all Palestinian territory occupied in 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital,” Rudeina reportedly told the AFP. “Israel did not present a single map and not a single serious position that could lead to a real peace on the basis of two states,” he said…

Unemployed Iraqis Turn to Crime
By Afif Sarhan, IOL Correspondent
Caught between the rock of unemployment and the hard place of government favoritism, more Iraqis are turning to crime to raise money to feed their families. “Each day more Iraqis are losing their jobs as response to the international economic crisis and joining criminal gangs who offer easy ways to reach to a wealthy life,” Samira Abdel-Kader, an activist and social assistant, told IslamOnline.net. “Fathers are getting desperate for not being able to join the labor force in Iraq. According to the United Nations and non-governmental organizations, nearly 28 percent of Iraqis aged between 15 and 29 are unemployed. Government sources, however, estimate the unemployment rate at 40 percent… Experts say that the problem is aggravated by government favoritism and picking up employees on sectarian bases. “Since 2006 people started to hire their employees according to their sects and inside government, ministries or government sectors that were headed by Shiite leaders, preferred to give job to those from the same origin or sect,” Abdallah Hamoudy, a political analyst, told IOL…

Message to the Future
Peter Chamberlin
This is written for you, the survivors. Two or three years ago, I decided to write this message to you. My only intentions were to find the best solutions to the nightmare visions and ease the suffering billions of souls who were scheduled to pay the final price of a world system based on greed. There is no sense in having a nightmare vision of the future that you know is real if it cannot be shared with others today, in real time. Warning of an impending massive fatal mental illness as a timely prescription for avoidance is an act of futility, in a population inured of life and deaf and blind to any signs of greater “Life.”…

Project Life: World Orphan Rehabilitation Program
By: Janet Zimmerman, Representative
The horrendous crimes that were perpetrated by Israel have left hundreds of families destitute. Many are faced with no other option but to live in one of the many tent camps scattered throughout the rubbles of Gaza. These tents offer only limited protection from the elements, and those who live in them are given nothing but blankets and an inadequate food supply. The children that live here suffer from malnutrition and trauma. Their childlike dreams have turned into nightmares, and their nights are flooded by involuntary urination as they wake themselves by their own petrified screams. Many have witnessed the death of a parent, and their innocence is lost…

The Case Against Israel’s “Right To Exist”
An Open Letter to Representative David Price (D) 4th District, NC
Roger Tucker
As you know, Mr. Price, I was invited to join a group of activists who met with you Monday morning to urge you to take action regarding the siege of Gaza, the Occupation and American support for Israel. I declined to attend because my particular focus is on One State advocacy, and you have made it crystal clear that this is not your view, nor is it ever likely to be (unless and until, in the due course of time, it becomes politically expedient). You represent the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), fondly known as the pat of butter in a sea of grits, a highly educated, liberal, metropolitan area that votes heavily Democratic. You received 63% of the vote in the recent election, and fly under the “progressive” flag. Yet you voted for House Resolution 34, supporting Israel’s massacre in Gaza…

Gaza 2009: De-Osloizing the Palestinian Mind
Dr. Haidar Eid
One of the most important outcomes of the Gaza massacre (2009) has been the unprecedented tremendous outpouring of popular support for the Palestinian cause; something the signatories of the Oslo accords (1993) must have not been happy with. The return of the pre-Oslo slogans of liberation, as opposed to independence, have, undoubtedly, created a new dilemma, not only for Oslo political elites, but also for the NGOized, Stalinist Left. The process of “Osloization”i.e, a combination of corruption, Ngoization, and a selling-out of revolutionary principles and sloganeering, fused with the fiction of the two-prison solution, has been dealt a heavy blow in the 2006 elections. Judging from statements made, not only by PA officials, but also by the Left, and even the Hamas government, the ultimate goal of the current river of blood has become the establishment of a Palestinian state in any dimension, i.e. the two-state solution…

The mysterious case of Mohamed al-Dainy
Robert Fisk
Where is Mohamed al-Dainy? In prison in Baghdad? On the run? Or is this Sunni Muslim Iraqi member of parliament and human rights defender facing torture or even death in his own country? Certainly that is what his brother Ahmed fears. “We are afraid for his life and the lives of our family members in Baghdad,” he says from the safety of Damascus. “The whole family fears they are in direct threat from the Iraqi government.” Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government denies that it has arrested or imprisoned the disappeared man – even though government agents tried to detain him at Baghdad airport on 25 February after his flight to Amman was ordered to return to Iraq when it was almost halfway to Jordan with an Iraqi parliamentary delegation. The authorities have alleged that he planned a suicide bombing in the Iraqi parliament on 12 April 2007, which killed eight people including a colleague from his own political party, a claim that the Geneva-based human rights group Alkarama, which is also fearful for Mr al-Dainy’s safety, says is “politically motivated” because of the missing man’s exposure of secret prisons and torture in Iraq…

Divide and rule at work
Marcy Newman, Body on the line

Israelis ‘firing live rounds’ at West Bank protesters
Peter Beaumont
Israeli armed forces and border police used the cover of the war against Hamas in Gaza to reintroduce the firing of .22 rifle bullets – as well as the extensive use of a new model of tear-gas canister – against unarmed demonstrators in the Occupied West Bank protesting at the building of Israel’s “separation wall”. The tactics were highlighted on Friday, when a US protester, Tristan Anderson, 38, was hit in the head by one of the new extended-range gas canisters in the village of Ni’ilin, suffering an open wound in his skull and substantial brain damage. Anderson’s friend, Gabrielle Silverman, claims he was struck by a canister fired from a high-velocity rifle. The arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Omar al-Bashir, the president of Sudan, could tear the country apart, Middle East experts have warned. America’s Search for the “Good Taliban”

Reminiscent of a casting call for “America’s Next Top Model,” the Obama administration has embarked on a search for the ever-elusive “good Taliban” with whom it can negotiate a partial military climb-down. In an exclusive–and revealing–March 8 interview with The New York Times, President Barack Obama declared that the United States “was not winning the war in Afghanistan and opened the door to a reconciliation process in which the American military would reach out to moderate elements of the Taliban, much as it did with Sunni militias in Iraq.” Reflecting desperation and ignorance when it comes to the war-scarred Central Asian nation, like its Republican predecessor, the Democratic administration has failed to come to grips with ubiquitous facts on the ground…

It is simply wrong for commentators to continue to focus on President Barack Obama’s high levels of popularity, and to conclude that these are indicative of high levels of public confidence in the work of his administration. Indeed, a detailed look at recent survey data shows that the opposite is most likely true. The American people are coming to express increasingly significant doubts about his initiatives, and most likely support a different agenda and different policies from those that the Obama administration has advanced…
