Israeli military readying for second “harsh attack” on Gaza
Ma’an news
Ma’an – The Israeli military is preparing a “harsh attack on Gaza,” in response to homemade rockets that are continuously fired into Israel by Palestinian fighters, multiple Israeli news sources reported on Friday. “The army is preparing to carry out a huge and harsh attack at any moment, which is required to stop firing projectiles on Israel,” said one report, quoting senior military sources. Last Sunday Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert vowed a “painful response” to the homemade projectiles that Israel failed to stop with its three-week war on the Gaza Strip in December and January. More than 1,400 Palestinians were killed during the offensive…

Government attacks on the leadership of the Iraqi Teachers Union
Fred van Leeuwen, General Secretary, EI
I write on behalf of Education International (EI) – the Global Union Federation of education unions representing over 30 million members in 171 countries and territories, to express EI’s concern about the anti-union and anti-democratic measures taken against the Iraqi Teachers’ Union (ITU), and to urgently request that the fundamental trade union rights of the ITU are guaranteed. EI has been informed by the President of ITU of attempts by Government officials to take over the leadership of the teacher organization prior to the trade union elections. A so-called ‘Election Committee’ composed of representatives of the Iraqi government has pressurized the current leaders of the teacher organization to hand over the keys to the union premises, financial assets and all the unions records (financial accounts and membership lists).
The current elected leaders of the teacher organization have been threatened with years of imprisonment if they do not obey…

THE UNITED STATES OF ISRAEL
Khaled Amayreh
It seems that one doesn’t have to wait four years to find out that Hillary Clinton is just a fraud, very much like her predecessor in the job, Condoleezza Rice. The infamous Rice paid 24 visits to Occupied Ramallah and Occupied Jerusalem, babbling about the “peace process” and George Bush’s vision of two states living side by side in peace, Israel and Palestine. Eventually, however, it was proven beyond any doubt that she was a lying emissary representing even a more lying boss. So one may really wonder if Hillary Clinton will be re-enacting the same absurd show, same lies, and same deception…

Pots of urine, feces on the walls – how IDF troops vandalized Gaza homes
Amira Hass
We had already visited this house, belonging to the Abu Eida family. It is the only one of the family’s nine large houses that remained standing at the eastern edge of the city of Jabalya following Operation Cast Lead. The demolition of the family’s houses and its four cement factories spells the loss of 40 years of hard work. One Hebrew word scrawled on a wall tells the story of the 10 days when young Israeli soldiers became the ostensible prison wardens of five people. The youngest is Suheila Masalha, 55; the eldest is her mother Fatma, who is perhaps 85 or 90 or older. The only man is her brother Mohammed, 65, who is paralyzed and dependent on the women of his family. And there were two more women from the Abu Eida family – Rasmiya, 70, who owns the house, and her sister-in-law Na’ama, 56, who is blind…

Palestinian reconciliation remains far off: some blame Iran, others point to the US
Kristen Ess / PNN exclusive
A Palestinian official ruled out the possibility of an internal reconciliation “during the month of March.” The official close to the Palestinian dialogue in Cairo said that outside parties are negatively impacting progress. Internal Palestinian reconciliation has been on the table in Yemen, Cairo, Syria, Doha, Gaza, Ramallah and points in between for years. Meetings of the five reconciliation committees, formed to take-on the most contentious internal issues, will still begin as scheduled next week… With Iran and the Americans looking for what can easily be perceived as control and / or domination, depending on which Palestinian party is talking, the losers are again the Palestinian people and the winners the Israeli occupation…

Tangled Up in Karl: The Hidden Connections Behind the Rove-Obama Deal
Chris Floyd
There has been a flutter of congratulatory noise in some quarters about the recent “compromise” brokered by the White House regarding Karl Rove’s criminal refusal to heed Congressional subpoenas requiring his testimony on the Bush Administration’s transformation of the Justice Department into a goon squad targeting — and imprisoning — political opponents. Whereas mere mortals can go to prison for ignoring a Congressional summons, Rove has been allowed to roam free, appearing on national television, writing for national publications, and carrying on his life’s work of polluting and degrading the nation’s political culture. This unelected, porcine bullshit-slinger is apparently so powerful that the new President of the United States felt compelled to step in and negotiate the very gentle terms under which said porcine polluter would deign to appear before Congress…

Video: Closed Zone
Gisha – Legal Center for Freedom of Movement
Despite declarations that it has “disengaged” from the Gaza Strip, Israel maintains control of the Strip’s overland border crossings, territorial waters, and air space. This includes substantial, albeit indirect, control of the Rafah Crossing. During the past 18 months, Israel tightened its closure of Gaza, almost completely restricting the passage of goods and people both to and from the Strip. These policies punish innocent civilians with the goal of exerting pressure on the Hamas government, violating the rights of 1.5 million people who seek only to live ordinary lives – to be reunited with family, to pursue higher education, to receive quality medical treatment, and to earn a living…

Obama Continues the Way Designed by Bush
By Ibrahim Ebeid, Al-Moharer.net
…Mr. Obama promised the American people to stop the war in Iraq and withdraw the US troops. He promised peace and prosperity but his promises do not show any sign of hope or fulfillment. I listened attentively to the president’s speech, hoping to find hope to end the war, but my hope dashed away because the president chose to expand the war and intensify it in Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to his speech, the occupation of Iraq will continue and his support to the government that came on top of the invading tanks will be strengthened, and as a result for the path he has chosen, sectarianism will rule, Iraq would be more chaotic and Iran would play a more destructive role in Iraq. All members of the so called Iraqi government belong to sectarian parties that were established and supported by Iran. The president did not deviate from Bush’s stand but continues to utilize it to dupe the American people to be behind the US Imperialist schemes to dominate the world and to suffocate every hope for freedom and independence. Mr. Obama claims that the American soldiers “have fought against tyranny and disorder.”..

Anatomy of dialogue
Abdel-Moneim Said
The need for inter-Palestinian dialogue has loomed over Arab politics since 1948, or even before. Some of you may recall how in the 1960s everyone wanted the Ahmed Shoqeiri-led PLO to sort things out with the Yasser Arafat-led Fatah, the latter being back then a bit of an enigma. Was it an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, some wondered, or a pawn of Israel? Having taken control of the PLO after the 1967 war, Fatah found itself having to talk to the George Habash-led Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Then the PFLP had to talk to the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), Fatah had to talk to the Revolutionary Council, and all the above had to contend with the General Command or whatever splinter group was up and coming. You cannot be smart enough to know what’s going on in the dark recesses of Palestinian politics…

“Backward” Palestinian Healthcare
IslamOnline.net
Health standards in the occupied Palestinian territories have badly deteriorated, exacerbated by Israel’s military occupation and stifling restrictions, a medical study found on Thursday, March 5. “Since 2000, the occupied Palestinian territory has experienced increasing human insecurity, with the erosion and reversal of many health gains made in earlier years,” says Richard Horton, editor of the highly-reputable medical journal The Lancet. “These setbacks, together with the latest Israeli air and ground attacks on Gaza, have plunged the region into a humanitarian crisis.”…

Breaking Ice, US Invites Iran to Afghan Meeting
IslamOnline.net
In a major policy shift, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced on Thursday, March 5, her administration planned to invite Iran to attend a high-level international conference on Afghanistan planned for later this month. “If we move forward with such a meeting, it is expected that Iran would be invited as a neighbor of Afghanistan,” Clinton told a news conference in Brussels after meeting NATO foreign ministers, reported Reuters. Clinton called earlier Thursday for a ministerial-level conference on Afghanistan and the broader regional challenge on March 31…

The Ultimate Earmark
U.S. Military Aid to Israel
By KATHLEEN and BILL CHRISTISON
In these days of economic crisis, budget overruns, earmarks, and multi-billion dollar bailouts, when Americans are being forced to tighten their own belts, one of the most automatic earmarks—a bailout by any measure—goes to a foreign government but is little understood by most Americans. U.S. military aid to Israel is doled out in annual increments of billions of dollars but remains virtually unchallenged while other fiscal outlays are drastically cut. The United States and Israel signed a Memorandum of Understanding in August 2007 committing the U.S. to give Israel $30 billion in military aid over the next decade. This is grant aid, given in cash at the start of each fiscal year. The only stipulation imposed on Israel’s use of this cash gift is that it spend 74 per cent to purchase U.S. military goods and services…

Suing for war crimes
Azmi Bishara
It is not my intention to discuss the definitions of resistance, the legitimacy of resistance or the laws of war in general. Nor will I delve into the definition of war crimes, the relevant articles in international conventions, the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, the duties and obligations of its member states, the powers of its prosecutor and the difference between this court and those that were established for the prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity in specific countries, such as the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia. All these subjects have been treated extensively in numerous other publications. My purpose here is to shed light on some possibly unfamiliar aspects of the notion of appealing to this form of international arbitration…

Sheikh Sabri : Third Intifada to defend the al-Aqsa Mosque, not far off
Saed Bannoura – IMEMC
Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, Head of the Higher Islamic Committee, the grand Mufti of Jerusalem, said that a third Palestinian Intifada in defense of Jerusalem and its holy sites, combined with resisting Israel’s transfer policies against the Palestinians, is not a far stretch. In a Friday interview with the al-Khaleej (The Gulf) newspaper, based in Emirates, Sheikh Sabri said that an Intifada against injustice does not wait for a political decision. Sheikh Sabri added that Israel’s ongoing attacks against the Palestinians and Jerusalem is pushing towards a third Intifada…

Hezbollah Says British Dialogue Offer ‘Step in Right Direction’
Hussein Assi, Al Manar
… And the British-Hezbollah relations entered a new era! Indeed, and a few months following its ‘suspicious’ decision to halt talks with the Resistance group and to add its ‘military wing’ to its list of ‘banned organizations,’ Britain decided to reconsider its position in light of “more positive developments within Lebanon.” Thus, dialogue with Hezbollah didn’t turn out to be only possible but also fruitful according to British officials. According to Britain’s Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammel, the British dialogue offer seeks “to press Hezbollah to play a more constructive role in the region.”…
Britain has taken a “step in the right direction” by signaling willingness to talk to Hezbollah, Hezbollah spokesman Ibrahim al-Moussawi declared on Friday…

Manic beat preacher
John Lewis, Guardian
A few days before I meet Gilad Atzmon, he finds himself at the centre of an international storm. The prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has approvingly cited Atzmon during a debate with Israeli president Shimon Peres. “Atzmon, a Jew himself,” said Erdogan, “says that Israeli barbarity is far beyond even ordinary cruelty.” Ever since, Atzmon has been getting 200 emails a day, his BlackBerry is constantly buzzing and his words are being debated by hundreds of bloggers around the world. Atzmon is revelling in the attention. “A world leader quoting an artist?” he laughs. “Isn’t that incredible? Not a singer, not even a fucking pianist, but a stupid fucking saxophonist! Ha!”…

GI Special 7C3: “A Horrible Place To Put A Base” [ 5 March 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
The attacks usually begin in the afternoon, just after the soldiers of Combat Outpost Seray return from patrol.
One recent day, Taliban fighters shot at the base from a nearby mountain range. In response, Apache attack helicopters launched rockets at the mountain, kicking up plumes of mottled smoke.
“Day comes, day goes,” said Spc. Trey Dart, taking shelter under a makeshift roof of green sandbags.
“Firefights are just another part of the routine.”
President Barack Obama is hoping to boost the flagging war effort in Afghanistan by sending 17,000 reinforcements.
Most of them will be deployed to small, remote bases such as Seray, a walled compound of trenches and fortified buildings near the Pakistan border.
Many of these new outposts will be in eastern and southern Afghanistan, the most violent parts of the country.

GI Special 7C4: White House Mail [ 6 March 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
The Iraqi Resistance Responds to President Obama:
“It Is Time That People In Washington Understand That There Are No Shared Interest Between An Occupying Tyrant And An Oppressed Victim Of Occupation”
“The People Of Iraq Whom You Addressed, In All Their Sects Colours And Religions, Refuse Your Occupation”
“We Promised To Pin Down Your Troops In Iraq And Drain Your Economy Until You Admit Defeat And Withdraw Your Troops”
“Remember, That Hiding Behind And Holding Castles Is No Longer Sustainable In Modern Warfare!”
“While you were preparing your new strategy in leaving the streets and highways of Iraq to your collaborators, and hiding your troops behind the walls of the castles and green zones you have prepared for your minimized long term presence, we have been preparing to address your new tactics and will deal with them in the proper manner.”

March 5, 2009: 21 Iraqis Killed, 73 Wounded
Margaret Griffis, Antiwar.com
A significant bombing south of Baghdad shattered the relative peace of the last few days. Dozens of casualties were reported. Overall, at least 21 Iraqis were killed and another 73 were wounded across Iraq. No Coalition casualties were reported. Meanwhile, Sweden urged the European Union to take more Iraqi refugees. A car bomb was detonated at a livestock market in Hamza. At least 14 were killed and 55 more were wounded. The explosion took place just south of what was once called the “Triangle of Death” in Babel province. That area was once extremely violent but has been relatively peaceful in recent months. Official wondered if the bombing was related to anger over recent provincial elections…
