On American crimes & the International Criminal Court
Body on the Line
…in addition to multi-national, u.s.-based corporations and military involvement in sudan, what i think is really important about snow’s writing is his unpacking of the so-called “save darfur” movement, a movement that in the u.s. is largely controlled by zionists who enjoy altering the reality into a fabricated narrative of arabs/muslims attacking black africans as if sudan can be untied in such a tidy package. of course they always fail to report the fact that many refugees from darfur seeking refuge in the zionist entity are immediately imprisoned (search my blog you will find numerous such reports here). here is what snow says on the “save darfur” organization and related constructed narratives about mass murder and genocide in africa…

“Dialogues”
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…All the discourse preceding Iraq’s occupation point to the latter i.e a deliberate plan to tear at the fabric of Iraqi society. The discourse that has been promulgated, propagandized and marketed by the Zionist neo-cons of which Perle is one of the chief proponents. Perle in particular is interesting insofar as his ties to Israeli politics, being an ex-advisor to B.Netanyahu clearly denotes the Zionist plan behind this Occupation. It is also very saddening to include in this Zionist plan the Shiites elements of Iraqi society, in particular the then opposition in exile, comprised of Maliki, Jaafari, Chalabi, Hakeem, and the rest, who fueled this discourse with more deceptive lies — thus leading the way to the partition of Iraq…

Iraq’s Palestinian refugees back at square one
Anaheed Al-Hardan writing from Syria, Live from Palestine
When images and news of the new border tent-camps that the Palestinian refugees from Iraq fled to after the US invasion began to spread through Arabic-language media, a concurrent anecdote began to circulate: “Word is that the Palestinians will even be hosted in tent-camps in the afterlife.” The nightmare of the approximately 25,000 to 30,000 Palestinians whose families sought refuge in Iraq in 1948 is but the latest manifestation of the ongoing tragedy of Palestinian stateless refugeehood. This is a story of multiple uprootings and dispossessions since 1948 by both Israel as well as Arab host states that have turned what is known as the Nakba of 1948 into a persistent and ever-present condition that has led to, and allowed for, multiple post-1948 Nakbas…

Palestinians Need Help, Not Charity
By Aijaz Zaka Syed – Dubai
…Every time a Gaza-like outrage takes place, the irrepressible lot that the Palestinians are start from scratch, painstakingly rebuilding their homes, towns and lives. And every time Israel destroys them all over again, obliterating all their valiant efforts and precious resources and keeping them locked in a perpetual, vicious cycle that never ends. Why can’t the powers that run this region and the world save all this bother and simply ask Israel to behave? For it is not the destruction of Gaza or Hamas rockets, which Israel uses as an excuse to bomb the Palestinians, that is the real cause of this conflict…

When God Spoke to Me
By Mohamed El Mokhtar Haiba
Although George W. Bush is universally recognized for his right-wing leaning, he is not so well-known, at least publicly, for upholding some of the most fundamentalist apocalyptic thoughts underpinning the spiritual beliefs of some of his ideological brethren. A recent book to be published soon in France by Plon may help shed some light, if the allegations therein contained were to be independently verified, on this, perhaps, mysterious side of the ex-republican president of the United States. The book whose French title is Si vous le répétez, je démentirai (If you repeat it, I will deny) is written by the journalist Jean Claude Maurice who served as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche between 1999 and 2003…

Iraq: Medical Care At Last, At a Price
Dahr Jamail
Prompt medical care is at last on offer in Iraq, for those who can find the dollars for it. “Why would I want to go to government-run hospitals where there is no care, no functioning instruments, long lines, and in the end the same doctor who treats you there can treat you at a private hospital,” says Mohammed Abbas, 35, an employee at Iraq’s Ministry of Oil. Abbas, speaking at the private Saint Raphael Hospital in the Karrada area of Baghdad, wanted treatment on time, and was prepared to pay for it. Like him, many are coughing up money for private treatment. When they have money, that is, in an economy with more than 50 percent unemployment…

Morocco severs relations with Iran
AlJazeera.net
Morocco has severed diplomatic relations with Iran, accusing the Iranian diplomatic mission in Rabat of seeking to spread Shia Islam in the predominantly Sunni Muslim kingdom. A statement from Morocco’s foreign ministry accused on Friday the Iranian embassy of “intolerable interference in the internal affairs of the kingdom”, and of engaging in activities which threatened the religious unity of the country…The controversy was fuelled recently by comments attributed to an adviser of Iran’s supreme leader, which questioned the sovereignty of Bahrain, a Gulf Arab state ruled by Sunnis, but with a majority Shia population. Morocco, however, has no official Shia population, with 99 per cent of the country are Sunnis, and the rest either jews or Christians. Sunni scholars in Morocco have denounced what they say is an effort to convert people to Shi’ism, arguing that such a practice could ultimately lead to sectarian strife similar to that witnessed in Iraq after the US-led invasion in 2003…

Modern Slavery in America
Stephen Lendman
…This is the plight of America’s vulnerable and those we exploit abroad, whether in restaurants, hotels, agriculture, domestic work, the sex trade, or on US offshore military bases, and seldom do courts provide justice. It’s America’s dark side along with an appalling record of crimes and abuses, including imperial wars, torture, and looting the national wealth for criminal bankers and the rich at the expense of growing millions in need left wanting at the most perilous economic time in our history…

CIA destroyed 12 harsh interrogation tapes
DEVLIN BARRETT, AP News
The CIA destroyed a dozen videotapes of harsh interrogations of terror suspects, according to documents filed Friday in a lawsuit over the government’s treatment of detainees. The 12 tapes were part of a larger collection of 92 videotapes of terror suspects that the CIA destroyed. The extent of the tape destruction was disclosed through a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the government. Heavily redacted papers filed in the case indicate a dozen destroyed tapes show so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques.”…

US Blames Afghan Weather for Taliban Success
Jason Ditz
Considering 2008 was the most violent year in Afghanistan since the 2001 American invasion and predictions that 2009 would be even worse, it hardly seems a shock that the winter of 2008-09 has been quite a bit more violent than normal. Yet Colonel Pete Johnson gave reporters an interesting reason for why its been a tough winter fighting the growing insurgency. The violence “has risen somewhat largely I believe due to the really good weather,” according to Johnson. “Many of the passes that would normally be blocked, just were not.”…

Palestine and Iraq: Now What?
By Ziad Shaker elJishi, Al-Moharer.net
Now that the bullets in Gaza have ceased and the imperialist executive-designate Barak Obama has taken office in America, what are the prospects for the resistance forces in the fight for Palestine and Iraq? If we are to believe the analysis put forth by some, then the new made man-in-chief will seek peace deals with Syria and Iran , negotiate with the “North Korean” DPRK and launch a new offensive against Pakistan . Just in a month or so in power, Obama is showing a renewed commitment to attacking Pakistan, has sent troops to Afghanistan and is maneuvering with negotiations with the DPRK, Syria and Iran. We should never trust Obama nor be fooled by the imperialist-capitalist infrastructure he is operating under…

Amputees detail horrors of Israeli siege and battle to get on with life
Bilal Badwan
Gaza: Among the thousands injured during Israel’s three-week bombardment of the Gaza Strip are many whose lives will be permanently affected after they lost their limbs. Suheir Zemo, a 47-year-old mother of seven, lost her right leg after an Israeli missile crashed into her home in the Tal Al Hawa neighbourhood of Gaza City in mid-January, at the height of the attacks. “I was in my bedroom when a rocket landed in the room. Suddenly my leg started bleeding severely. Then my husband risked his life and took me to hospital as ambulances were not allowed into the area,” said Maher, as she sat in a wheelchair at the Al Wafa Rehabilitation Centre in Gaza. At the centre, a number of amputees began the rehabilitation process. Al Wafa is the only private rehabilitation centre in Gaza, but that did not count for anything during the attacks, as it was not spared…

US officer charged with stealing Iraq relief funds
AFP
A US military officer was charged Thursday with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash intended for relief and reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Department of Justice said. While stationed in Iraq between April 2007 and February 2009, 28-year-old Michael Dung Nguyen is alleged to have stolen more than 690,000 dollars in US currency, sending it back to his home in northwestern Oregon state, the department said in a statement…
