Iraqi Resistance news gagged, but not Al-Zaidi?
Imad Khadduri, Free Iraq
A senior military officer in the Iraqi Defense ministry confirmed (below in Arabic) that the Iraqi Resistance is still attacking American soldiers and causing daily casualties in Anbar, Baghdad, Mosul, Diyala, Samara, Tikrit, Kerkuk and other cities and that the attacks have become more devastating and of a higher caliber. However, the Iraqi Resistance own news sources in reporting these attacks have been thoroughly smothered by the American occupation forces. The Iraqi government has also assisted in gagging the Iraqi journalists under the control of their unions and the “generous” privilges that are extended to them.
The army officer called the media coverage of the Iraqi Resistance attacks as “shameful”…

Global boycott movement marks its successes
Jeff Handmaker, The Electronic Intifada
Responding to the many calls for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel, solidarity movements around the world have marked many successes. It is important for human rights advocates to build on this momentum and seize the opportunity to do what is within their power to try and hold Israel accountable for its abuses of human rights and other international laws. Since the initial BDS call by Palestinian intellectuals and academics in October 2003, which was followed by separate calls for sports, arts, economic and other calls for BDS, there has been a seismic shift in the global solidarity movement for human rights in Israel-Palestine…

Iraq: Former army generals snub government’s offer to return
Azzaman
Commanders of the former army have set several conditions for the government to meet before considering reconciliation. On top of their demands come the cancellation of a notorious law called debaathification and ridding the current armed forces of sectarian affiliations. Under debaathification members of the former Arab Baath Party which ruled the country are not allowed to assume public and government posts. Almost all senior army commanders were Baath party members. “The government is not serious. We fear there is a trap here, otherwise they (government) should have first scrapped their debaathification rules,” said General Nouri al-Ubaidi…

Hammouri: Israeli schemes to overtake Jerusalem are beyond our ability to combat alone
Maisa Abu Ghazaleh
Director of the Jerusalem Center for Economic and Social Rights, Ziad Hammouri, said today that Israel has intensified the process of Judaizing the city of Jerusalem. While speaking with PNN he described the creation of a conclave through building the Wall and closing its gates. The Israeli administration is also moving towards full implementation of its Absentee Property Law. “The practice for Jerusalemites in the West Bank will be along the lines of the permits of the Gaza Strip, practices at the barriers will be similar.”..

US soldier found guilty in Iraqi killings
AFP
A military court on Friday found a US soldier guilty of premeditated murder in the killings of four blindfolded Iraqi prisoners in 2007, a US Army spokesman said. “A military panel just returned findings of guilty to premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit murder against Sergeant (Michael) Leahy,” Lieutenant Colonel George Wright told AFP. The panel has moved to the sentencing phase,” he said of the military court in Vilseck, southern Germany…

Sweden toughens stance on Iraqi refugees
Azzaman
The Swedish government is tightening rules under which Iraqi refugees seeking asylum could stay in the country and is using force to have them deported. It recently mobilized its police forces to round up hundreds of Iraqis, among them babies born in Sweden, and force them back home. Flats were stormed at midnight in several cities amid the cries of children. There are reports of mothers fainting on seeing their children hauled into police cars to detention centers before deportation…

Gulf Arabs fear US-Iran diplomacy at their expense
Lin Noueihed, Reuters
Gulf Arab states are beginning to worry that any US rapprochement with Iran could ultimately lead to their worst nightmare – a nuclear-armed, non-Arab, Shiite Muslim superpower in their neighbourhood. The US-allied Sunni Gulf Arab states had little enthusiasm for former president George W. Bush’s hardline stance on Iran, fearing it could spill into a war that would engulf the region. But equally they worry the offer of an improvement in US-Iran ties held out by President Barack Obama could go too far by offering concessions to a powerful regional player they have long regarded with a mix of suspicion and hostility…

Who Will Be There For Obusha, When The Floor Drops Out?
By David Michael Green
For months now, I’ve been wondering if Barack Obama would turn out to be another FDR – a bold and progressive figure who was the right match to the crises of his time – or another Bill Clinton – a pathetic sell-out who was the right match for little beyond pursuing his personal eight-year joy-ride at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Now I’m wondering if I haven’t been asking the wrong question altogether. Maybe the real mystery is whether Mr. Yes We Can will be another Bill Clinton or, gulp, another George W. Bush…

Investigating Gaza’s ‘war crimes’
AlJazeera.net
A photograph of her recent pilgrimage to Mecca is now all that remains of Rawhiyya al Najar. The mother was a Gaza native who had lived her entire life through conflict before it was to end on January 13, aged 37, by what was estimated to be a single shot to the head. Testimony from eyewitnesses, friends, neighbours and human rights experts about the incident tell the story of how a woman carrying a baby and white flag was shot in broad daylight by an Israeli soldier. Nasser al Najar, Rawhiyya’s husband, still has the bloodstained white flag he says his wife was carrying when she was killed…

Taliban: Afghanistan Will Be ‘Graveyard’ For U.S.
CBS News
A former government minister from the Taliban regime that ruled Afghanistan says the United States can throw as many soldiers into the country as it wants, they will just meet the same fate as all previous “foreign invaders.” A day after President Obama announced a massive increase in the U.S. troop presence — an additional 17,000 pairs of boots on the ground, coming soon — the former minister told CBS News he couldn’t understand, “why the U.S. relies on figures and the number of troops in a country such as Afghanistan, where the number of foreign invaders has never made any difference, and the winners have always been the freedom fighters.”…

Gaza’s emergency shelter camps fail to meet humanitarian or political needs
Writing from Gaza
Tuesday 10th January saw the first real rain in Gaza since the supposed “ceasefire”. Whilst most of Palestine is desperate for rain, it was bad news for the people sleeping in tents in the newly-constructed emergency shelter camps – as most of the tents are of simple triangular design without proper flooring or annexes in which to shelter. Despite the fact that approximately 100 000 Palestinians made homeless by 22 days of ceaseless aerial and land attacks, the numbers of people actually sleeping in the 10 camps throughout the Gaza Strip are not high. The reason is at once simple and staggering: there are not enough tents…

U.S.-Israel Storm Clouds Ahead?
Jim Lobe
After eight years of the closest possible relations, the United States and Israel may be headed for a period of increasing strain, particularly given the likelihood that whatever Israeli government emerges from last week’s election will be more hawkish than its predecessor. While Iran, with which Barack Obama has pledged to engage in a “constructive dialogue,” and the future of its nuclear program will no doubt serve as the greatest source of tension between the two allies, the new president’s commitment to achieving real progress on a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict may also provoke serious friction, particularly if a reunified Arab League launches a major new push for its 2002 peace plan…

Long road to rehabilitation for Gaza’s amputees
Rami Almeghari writing from the occupied Gaza Strip, Live from Palestine
Amidst the thousands of people injured during Israel’s three-week bombardment of the Gaza Strip are many whose lives will be permanently affected because they lost limbs. Suheir Zemo, a 47-year-old mother of seven, lost her right leg after an Israeli missile crashed into her home in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City in mid-January, at the height of the Israeli attack. “I was in my bedroom when a rocket landed in the room. Suddenly my leg started bleeding severely. Then my husband risked his life and took me to hospital as ambulances were not allowed into the area, said Suheir sitting in a wheelchair at the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza…

General Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Surge
Chris Floyd
I was in the process of writing a piece on Joan Walsh’s remarkable review of “The Gamble” — the latest book by Thomas Ricks, in which the intrepid Washington Post reporter hooks up (in just about every sense of that phrase) with General David “Ovalbound” Petraeus, to explain just how Ovalbound and his inner circle pretty much “won” the Iraq War single-handedly with the great “surge” — when I found that Justin Raimondo was already on the case, and had covered it well…

If Gazans want compassion from Israelis, they should grow a tail
Mary Rizzo, Palestine Think Tank
Sick and starving animals soften Israeli hearts: There never is a limit to the absurd. In a period when Israelis approve of killing and starving human beings, they find enough compassion so that they can get animal feed into the Gaza Zoo. I found this piece in Israel 21C (the site that brags about the high tech of Israel) and was dumbstruck reading it…

The question “Who is it?” was answered with: “The Israel Defense Forces.” Majdi Abed Rabbo, 39, who is a Palestinian Authority (Ramallah) employee and a member of its intelligence apparatus, went down to open the door. Standing there was the son of his neighbors, Mahmoud Daher, and behind him a soldier whose rifle was jammed into Daher’s back. The soldier pushed Daher aside and aimed the rifle at Abed Rabbo. “He ordered me to pull down my pants. I pulled them down. He demanded that I raise my shirt. I raised it. That I turn around. I turned around,” Abed Rabbo related. And then the room filled up with soldiers. “Twelve, or something like that.”…

US expands prison in Afghanistan
AlJazeera.net
The US military is about to complete a $60m expansion to its prison at the Bagram air base in Afghanistan, where it holds more than 600 so-called enemy combatants. The near doubling of the jail’s size comes as Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, prepares on Friday to “refine” Washington’s position on its use of Bagram and other facilities, including Guantanamo Bay. Gates, along with Eric Holder, the US attorney general, has been tasked with carrying out a review to determine the fate of detainees held in the US facilities…

Hamas: American visit to Gaza Strip step in the right direction
Palestine Solidarity Campaign
Hamas Movement has described the visit of members of the US Senate and Congress to the devastated Gaza Strip as “step in the right direction” although it was prompted by humanitarian reasons. Former US presidential Democrat candidate Sen. John Keri paid a visit to the tiny coastal Strip shortly after two members of the US Congress Bryan Bird and Keith Alison inspected the devastation left by the monstrous Israeli war on Gaza last month. The visit was the first visit paid by US official figures since Hamas Movement took control of the Strip two years ago…

Fearing a One-State Solution, Israel’s President Serves Pabulum to Washington
Franklin Lamb
Israeli President Shimon Peres has participated in shaping the policies of Israel for most of its existence. His Washington Post op-ed last week billed as “a peacepartners prod” to the Obama administration, evidences a major disconnect within the government of Israel concerning what is urgently required for that country’s increasingly unlikely long-term survival. According to a CIA Study currently being shown to selected staff members on the US Senate Intelligence Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Israel’s survival in its present form beyond the next 20 years is doubtful…

Iraqi shoe-thrower’s case is adjourned
By Tina Susman and Raheem Salman
…On Thursday, standing in the wooden defendant’s pen, Zaidi said he acted in a burst of rage as Bush, “smiling that icy smile,” spoke of achievements in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion of the country in March 2003 and mentioned his upcoming meal with Maliki. Zaidi, voice calm but forceful and an Iraqi flag draped like a cravat around his neck, said it was more than he could bear. “I thought about what the achievements were — killing about a million Iraqis,” Zaidi said…

Geithner Gets the Keys to the Henhouse
Trouble at Treasury
Mike Whitney
The Obama Team has a big problem on its hands; Timothy Geithner. Geithner was picked as Treasury Secretary because he is a trusted ally of the big banks and has a good grasp of the intricacies of the financial system. The problem is that Geithner can’t handle the public relations part of his job. His big debut in prime-time last Tuesday turned out to be a complete dud. He was thoroughly unconvincing and looked like a nervous teenager at a speech contest. He fizzled on stage for 25 minutes while the little red box in the corner of the TV screen—which shows the current Dow Jones Industrials—plummeted nearly 400 points. It was a total disaster and one that is sure to be repeated over and over as long as Geithner is at Treasury…
