If not fascism, what is? Without censure, a growing current in Israeli politics is calling for the outright killing of Palestinians
By Khaled Amayreh in occupied East Jerusalem
His name is Avigdor Lieberman and he is widely expected to be the main surprise of the Israeli elections, slated to take place 10 February. Many Israeli intellectuals dub Lieberman as the secular equivalent of Meir Kahana, the slain founder of the Kach terrorist group who advocated genocidal ethnic cleansing of non-Jews in Israel-Palestine. Kahana was assassinated in Manhattan, New York, in 1990 shortly after giving a speech in which he called for the annihilation and expulsion of Palestinians from “the Land of Israel”…

The starving of Gaza
Eric Ruder
ISRAEL’S WAR on Gaza took a terrible toll in human casualties. Bodies are still being exhumed from the rubble, and Israel’s refusal to open Gaza’s border crossings to allow in humanitarian supplies has made treating the injured a tortuously slow endeavor. But one less-noticed effect of the Israel’s brutal assault on the civilian and economic infrastructure of Gaza—combined with the suffocating effects of the 18-month siege that came before—is the further destruction of Gaza’s long-term ability to provide food for its population. The United Nations Children’s Fund said that economic losses as a result of the war total $1.9 billion, which is significantly larger than Gaza’s annual economic output…

Angry words of compromise
Khaled Amayreh
With a vitriolic war of words still raging between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority (PA) over the status of the PLO, both camps are bracing themselves for what many observers describe as a decisive round of national reconciliation talks sponsored and mediated by Egypt. The intensive talks, slated to start on 22 February, will centre on the formation of a “national reconciliation government” that would enjoy the backing of all or most Palestinian political and resistance factions, especially Fatah and Hamas. The government would have to be accepted as well by the international community, especially the donor countries…

Don’t undermine the PLO
Galal Nassar, Al-Ahram Weekly
…Recently, the chief of Hamas’s Political Bureau, Khaled Meshaal, lashed out at the PLO, calling for the creation of an alternative umbrella organisation for the Palestinians. The announcement came as a shock to many, but it was in keeping with what Hamas had in mind all along. Some say that the whole thing is a new manoeuvre on Hamas’s part to gain leverage in its talks with the PLO. Others say that Hamas is trying to control, not wreck, the PLO. But whether the aim is to control or replace the PLO, it comes down to the same thing…
The Palestinian people have sacrificed much. They have just experienced a brutal aggression, with perhaps more to come. For their sacrifices, the Palestinians deserve a united leadership. They deserve a leadership capable of acting upon clear goals and leading the nation closer to its aspirations. In fact, the Palestinians should use the recent tragedy to close ranks, not to turn against one another…

Steadfast Before Goliath
Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP
When I am asked about Palestinian identity, one idea keeps coming to mind. I was told it would be translated into English as “steadfastness.” I looked up what a steadfast person would be like and the dictionary says, “One marked by firm determination or resolution—not shakable—of firm convictions and strong resolve. A man of unbendable perseverance and unwavering loyalty.” That’s pretty close to what I had in mind, but somewhat incomplete—it is hard to capture an entire people in a word. Steadfastness refers to our Palestinian character of never giving in. It refers to our standing up to overwhelming odds time and again, without a friend in our corner. It is about our being beaten and abused in every way known to man, only to get back up with our heads held high…

Interview with Franklin Lamb: Self Defense or War Crime?
Lawyers Without Borders
On December 27, 2008, Israel launched a devastating 22 day and night bombardment of the Gaza strip. The assault left, amidst an estimated 600,000 tons of concrete rubble, some 1,740 dead (this figure includes more than 350 ‘forgotten’ stillbirths and trauma-caused abortions in Gaza during the 22 days of terror), a figure that increases as the severely injured continue to die. A majority of the victims were civilians, including nearly 900 (again including the stillborn) children, approximately 5,500 severely wounded, and more than one third of the 1.5 million population was displaced while more than 14,000 homes were completely destroyed. Approximately 92,000 Palestinians are still homeless with more than 16,000 living as many as 20 to a small tent without latrines, as supplies remain blocked at the borders. Single-limb fractures and the walking wounded are not included in the above figures, according to renowned British surgeon Dr. Swee Ang, currently conducting an on-the-ground medical investigation in Gaza. Dr. Swee and her medical colleagues estimate that of the severely injured, 1,600 will suffer permanent disabilities. These include amputations, spinal cord injuries, head injuries, and large burns with crippling contractures…

Israel holding 42 Palestinians in administrative detention for over two years
B’Tselem
Of the 548 Palestinians Israel is detaining without trial, 42 have been held for over two years, according to figures appearing in B’Tselem’s annual report, published today. Twenty-three have been administratively detained for over two and a half years, including three who have been detained between three and four and a half years, and two over four and a half consecutive years. In fact, the vast majority of administrative detainees (372) have been held without charge or trial for at least two consecutive periods…

More outreach
Missing links
…AMSI issued a statement in response a couple of days later, naming three Maliki emissaries who it says in fact met with Dhari to invite him to join in the political process, an invitation that it says was refused each time. The statement said these three were only some of the attempts, not all of them. And today, Akhbar alKhaleej prints extracts from an interview with Dhari in Amman, in which he elaborates on the approaches the Maliki government has made to him.His main point is that AMSI “has no intention of joining the political process, in spite of the fact that the government has knocked on its door on a number of occasions”…

Palestinian Information Center

Ezbet Abed Rabbo: “They make like art here”
Eva Bartlett | In Gaza
On a visit to Ezbet Abed Rabbo during which I heard more harrowing testimonies of life under invasion, children shot dead before parents’ eyes, and being held captive for days on end, I took more photos than I could testimonies. Such is the widespread destruction in the eastern Jabaliya region that the testimonies will be spilling forth for weeks, if not longer. Below are photos for which there wasn’t enough time that day to get the stories. Many of them speak for themselves, and the general theme is one of being held captive in one’s house or a neighbour’s for 3-5 days in general –in miserable conditions, without food, water, medicine, toilets…–and either having family members shot or being terrorized as captives who when finally released tried to run away only to be sniped or accosted by further Israeli snipers and soldiers positioned in occupied houses and on the streets…

Al-Maliki Allies with Sadrists; Al-Hakim and Allawi as Strange Bedfellows
Juan Cole
…If the followers of Shiite cleric Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr actually do form a coalition with al-Maliki’s Islamic Mission Party (Da`wa), that will be ironic. Al-Maliki’s party did so well because he sent his military against the Mahdi Army, the paramilitary of the Sadr Movement… Sawt al-Iraq says that the provincial coalition between Da`wa and the Sadrists is virtually a done deal. The Sadrists asked the PM to have detainees from the party released, and he pledged to look into letting those not accused of serious crimes out. Al-Maliki in his turn urged the Sadrists to strengthen their moderates and to expel from the party those who resorted to violence. Such a coalition would take Da`wa to 47% of seats in Baghdad province. The alliance does make some sense. Both are religious parties aiming at an Islamic state in Iraq and both can be traced to members of the prominent Sadr clerical lineage…

Gilad Atzmon: Israel needs Turkey
M.Hasan UNCULAR / TIMETURK
Gilad Atzmon is unique in his stance, unprecedented in his voice and unequivocal in his statements. As an Israel-born jazz musician and anti-Zionist activist, he propagates and chants his anti-Israeli contemplations explicitly and once he finds the opportunity. As a musician who plays soprano, tenor and baritone saxophones, clarinet, sol, zurna and flute, Atzmon has won several international awards so far, including the BBC Jazz Award 2003, and is considered as one of the most prosperous artists of his rank. In the position of an anti-Zionist activist, despite being Israeli originally, Gilad Atzmon incessantly denounces his belonging to the Jewish state and proclaims that he merely was born there and no more, which was perceptibly out of his knack and election, and that he feels no sympathy, compassion or nostalgia toward the occupying state of Israel…

Britain: Foreign Office colludes with US to cover-up torture of Binyam Mohamed
Robert Stevens
A High Court ruling by two British judges regarding the torture of a Guantánamo detainee has unleashed a major political crisis. The judges have stated that they have been pressured by the United States into concealing evidence that should be made available in any country governed by the rule of law. This took the form of threats to withdraw security cooperation, instigated under the Bush administration and continued under Barak Obama’s presidency. Binyam Mohamed, 30, is currently in Guantánamo Bay but is reportedly being prepared for a return to the UK. He states that he was tortured by US agents in Pakistan, Morocco and Afghanistan between 2002 and 2004, and that Britain’s security agencies were complicit…

US softens foreign policy stance
AlJazeera.net
…The Obama administration has now signalled that it is open to dialogue with Iran, marking a dramatic shift from the Bush era. “The Iranian people are a great people. The Persian civilisation is a great civilisation,” Biden said. “But Iran has acted in ways that are not conducive to peace in the region or to the prosperity of its people; its illicit nuclear programme is but one of those manifestations. “Our administration is reviewing policy toward Iran, but this much is clear: We will be willing to talk.”..

RACIST PARTIES DIVIDED IN ISRAELI ELECTION
Desertpeace
This coming Tuesday is Election Day in Israel. One hundred and twenty people will be elected to serve in the Knesset (Parliament). Israel fancies itself as a country with a Parliamentary System as is found in England and Canada. Nothing is further from the truth. In countries such as England and Canada, the people vote according to the electoral district that they live in. Each district has an elected official that is answerable to the voters in that area. The government is formed by the Party that received the most votes, and the leader of that Party becomes the Prime Minister. It’s about as democratic a system as one can find anywhere. In Israel, the so-called ‘only Democracy in the Middle East’, this is not the case…

“Let Netanyahu win”—An Arab writer agrees
Missing links
This morning AlQuds alArabi op-ed writer Subhi Hadidi quotes from a piece in Haaretz yesterday by Gideon Levy. Levy wrote: (…) Netanyahu’s election is likely to bring the curtain down on the great fraud – the best show in town – the lie of “negotiations” and the injustice of the “peace process.” Israel consistently claimed these acts proved the nation was focused on peace and the end of the occupation. All the while, it did everything it could to further entrench the occupation and distance any chance of a potential agreement…Hadidi quotes that passage, then recounts some of the history of Netanyahu’s political career. But only to make the point that the “authentic Israeli view” that Gideon Levy talks about hasn’t changed over the course of recent Israeli history, in fact all that can be expected is more of that characteristic “mix of terror and savagery”…

A week in Gaza
Khaled El-Fiqi
Going to Gaza is a dream for journalists wishing to see the full impact of the horror Israel unleashed on the Strip. Israel totally wrecked Gaza, forcing the Arabs to pay once again for the havoc left behind by its war machine. Being under occupation, Gaza is harder to visit than Israel. Journalists are allowed to cross from the Egyptian border at their own risk, into a land still dreaming of independence…
