Invisible Blood: Willful Blindness and American War Crime
Chris Floyd
…This is the excellent foppery of our times: to pretend that what we are dealing with in Washington is some variant of “politics as usual” — who’s in, who’s out, the state of play in the political game, the ordinary meshing and thrashing of policy and partisanship in a normal democracy. But all the while, this monstrous crime rages in the background. The blood of a million innocent people killed by the machinations of the America elite flows out of Iraqi soil and permeates every inch of the imperial capital. When our leaders gather in solemn conclave to debate “the issues” — or yuk it up together at sumptuous bipartisan banquets — they tread in this blood, they sit in this blood. Yet it is obvious now that nothing on earth will ever make this blood visible, not only to the ones who have perpetrated or abetted its shedding, but also to the people at large, in whose name it has been shed, and who will bear the long-reverberating brunt of the blowback — financial, political, “asymmetrical” — from this atrocity…

Obama executive orders continue “extraordinary renditions,” secret CIA prisons
Tom Eley
Analysis of the executive orders US President Barack Obama signed on January 22 shows that the United States will continue to be heavily involved in illegal practices including kidnapping, secret detention and torture. The orders ostensibly ended torture and a network of secret Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) prison camps. The Los Angeles Times published a report on the executive orders, however, showing that they allow the continued use of “extraordinary rendition” by the CIA, whereby the US secretly abducts individuals it claims are terrorists, sending them to nations that practice torture…

The Davos World Economic Forum (WEF)
Competing Ideologies: Davos v. Belem
Stephen Lendman
Founded in 1971, the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF) meets annually in Davos, Switzerland to bring together top business and political leaders as well as mostly neoliberal minded intellectuals, economists, journalists, and others. WEF calls itself “an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industry agendas.” It aims for “world-class governance (read dominance).” Its motto is “entrepreneurship in the global public interest (read for the top 1%).” This year’s theme – “Shaping the Post-Crisis World” – a tall order addressing what they caused that’s heading the world for a calamitous depression…

Gaza: people still struggling for clean water
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
…according to the Gaza water authority some 300,000 people still have no tap water. Some people buy their water from water trucks that come to fill tanks on rooftops. Others buy smaller quantities from small businesses making the rounds of damaged neighbourhoods to sell water from donkey carts. “To carry out emergency repairs and maintenance of the water supply system, we need pipes and spare parts,” said Mr Komarzynski. “We are waiting for approval from the Israeli authorities to bring in these materials.” Because of the closure imposed by the Israeli authorities, materials needed for the proper maintenance and development of the water supply infrastructure have been greatly restricted for over 18 months…

An Interview with Pierre Sprey and Marilyn Young
Obama’s Wars
BILL MOYERS
Very often in the White House, the most momentous decisions are, at the time, the least dramatic, the least discussed. And they don’t make news, or history, until much later, when their consequences bubble to the surface downstream. There are observers who think that could prove to be the case with a decision made within hours of Barack Obama’s swearing in last week. It started as a few lines in wire reports – a bit of buzz on the web – then a story here and there in the weekend papers. Unmanned American drones like this one, called Predators, honing in on villages in Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan, striking like silent intruders in the night, against suspected terrorists. Early accounts of casualties varied from a dozen to more than 20 dead and wounded…

Critics of Meshal’s anti-PLO statement include the leftists
PNN
Since Hamas political bureau leader Khaled Meshal said that the PLO should be abolished condemnations have come in droves. Exiled and living in Syria, Meshal said several days ago that the Palestine Liberation Organization was not the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people that it was meant to be because it does not include all parties. As such, Meshal suggested abolishing the PLO and creating a new, more representative body…In the northern West Bank’s Nablus the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine is among those who criticized Meshal’s remarks. The PFLP Executive Committee Secretary General Adbel Rahim Malluah said today, “We reject alternatives to the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people whose political efforts are great and based on the struggle of the Palestinian people.”…

Muslims, Christians in Jerusalem united against the Israeli excavations
Palestinian Information Center
Palestinian Muslim and Christian figures have highlighted the importance of the Palestinian unity in protecting occupied Jerusalem from the intensified Israeli practices to judaize the city. Dr. Ekrema Sabri, the chairman of the higher Islamic authority in Jerusalem, who was present at the conference, highlighted the dangers that engulf the occupied city and the holy Aqsa Mosque as a result of the Israeli hostile practices and excavations in the city. He pointed to the collapse of a classroom in an UNRWA-run school in the Selwan suburb, which is close to the walls of the Mosque…

Comrade Sa’adat: On the Palestine Liberation Organization, national unity and the resistance
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
Comrade General Secretary Ahmad Sa’adat, the imprisoned leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, praised the steadfastness of all forces and factions of the Palestinian people and stressed the urgency of culminating the achievements of the resistance in Gaza with national unity in order to defeat the political goals of the occupation – fostering internal Palestinian division in order to impose the political projects of the U.S. and Israel upon our people. Comrade Sa’adat issued his statement on January 31, 2009 during the visit of attorney Buthaina Duqmaq, President of the Mandela Federation, at the Hadarim prison. He praised the steadfastness and the valiant resistance of the Palestinian people in Gaza…

Oxfam: Israel blocks half of Gaza needs
Palestinian Information Center
The British organization Oxfam international accused Israel of barring the arrival of more than 50 percent of the Palestinian citizens’ needs in the Gaza Strip through the closure of border crossings despite the disastrous situation of Palestinians there which was further aggravated by the war. Commenting on the UN efforts to raise funds for Gaza, Oxfam said, in a statement received Tuesday by the PIC, money alone could not solve the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza…

It is Time to Say “Enough”
Gilad Atzmon, Palestine Think Tank
It was rather encouraging to see PM Erdogan standing up for a humanist cause in Davos. But it didn’t really take me by complete surprise. Once again it has been proven that as far humanity and ethics are concerned, Islam and Muslim leaders are at the forefront together with only very few decent popular leaders such as Chavez and Morales. At the end of the day, it was PM Erdogan who opened his mouth and told the world leaders present that which they should have grasped on their own a long time ago…

In Gaza, a “ranch” turned to rubble
Rami Almeghari writing from the occupied Gaza Strip
Piles of bricks, metal sheets and pieces of wood, are all that remains of tens of Palestinian homes in the Ezbet Abed Rabu (Abed Rabu Ranch) neighborhood, east of Jabaliya town in the northern Gaza Strip. “There is nothing left for us to live for — the house was lost and the furniture destroyed,” lamented Suad Muhammad Abed Rabu, a 53-year-old mother sitting in front of a fire stove in a still intact room of her badly damaged home. “We prefer to die in our demolished house rather than live life as outcasts,” she said. “Since we were born we have been suffering. Since 1948 we have moved from one refuge to another and from one war to another. All, including Arabs and Europeans, are conspiring against us, they don’t want us to live.”..

Sunnis, Nationalists Make Gains in Iraq
Preliminary, mostly leaked, results from the elections in Iraq suggest a tectonic shift away from ultrareligious Shiite parties and separatist Kurds, with nationalists, secular parties, Sunnis, and Prime Minister Maliki all making huge gains. If so, it’s the first step toward a major recalibration of Iraqi politics — and for the good. Big losers: the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI), the Iranian-backed Shiite separatist party, whose militia, the Badr Brigade, was responsible for thousands of assassinations since 2003, and the Kurds, whose hold on Nineveh province in the north, was shattered. The election can also be seen as a setback for Iran, whose chief allies in Iraq — especially ISCI, but also Jalal Talabani’s Kurds — lost…

‘Great confusion’ at Iraqi polling stations
Phil Sands
Electoral registration problems led to “chaos” at a series of polling stations in Ninewa province where hopeful voters were turned away and unable to cast their ballot, according to a European election monitor working in Iraq. Afram Yakoub, who visited eight different election centres in the northern Iraqi province during Saturday’s vote, said he was compiling a report detailing fraud allegations that would be submitted to the United Nations and Iraq’s Independent High Election Commission…

Israel launches three airstrikes on Gaza
Ma’an news
Israeli F16 fighter jets bombed the borderline between the Gaza Strip and Egypt south of the city of Rafah, and an alleged training camp for Palestinian fighters near the city of Khan Younis on Tuesday evening. Witnesses reported that the American-made warplanes fired at least one missile in Rafah, and also reported the sound of a massive explosion. In a second strike warplanes struck what is said to be a training camp for the armed wing of Hamas, the Al-Qassam Brigades, on the outskirts of the city of Khan Younis, also in southern Gaza…

NATO says members may use Iran for Afghan supplies
SLOBODAN LEKIC, AP
NATO would not oppose individual member nations making deals with Iran to supply their forces in Afghanistan as an alternative to using increasingly risky routes from Pakistan, the alliance’s top military commander said Monday. Gen. John Craddock’s comments came just days after NATO’s secretary general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, urged the U.S. and other members of the Western military alliance to engage with Iran to combat Taliban militants in Afghanistan…

Divide et impera
Jordan Times
The division between the Islamic movement, Hamas, and Fateh, the mainstream Palestinian grouping, is getting deeper and more worrying by the day. The division between the two was aggravated by Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal’s decision to break away from the Fateh-controlled Palestine Liberation Organisation and establish a new national grouping. This led Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to declare that he will not continue a reconciliation dialogue with any Palestinian faction that rejects the PLO as the only lawful, internationally recognised representative of the Palestinian people…

They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity: Secular “Anti-Zionist” Jewish groups echo Zionist groups
Mary Rizzo, Palestine Think Tank
A very strange thing is happening at this moment within a circle of people who like to consider themselves at the cutting edge of the struggle for the Palestine, and we are referring to the individuals who classify themselves as Secular Anti-Zionist Jews, and consider themselves to be the “independent” Jewish voices, and as thus, the avant-garde of “the Pro-Palestinian movement”. Following what can only be classified as a unique international event of major media importance, and perhaps also of a certain historical significance, they are protesting and stomping their feet in anger at the intervention of Erdogan on a stage shared by the General Secretary of the UN, the leader of the Arab League and the President of Israel…

Innocence, morality ravaged in Gaza
HOWARD J. GALE
Israel has dropped tens of thousands of pounds of U.S.-made and/or U.S.-paid-for munitions on one of the most densely populated regions on Earth. Israel has been firing on known United Nations schools, killing dozens of civilians. There are credible U.N. reports that Israel has bombed shelters to which Israel evacuated civilians 24 hours earlier. Israel is using artillery shells, widely banned cluster munitions and white phosphorus munitions, all of which guarantee an increasing proportion of civilian casualties (more than 50 percent of the more than 1,000 Palestinians killed). How can one justify the dropping of a 2,000-pound bomb on the home of a Hamas leader killing 18 others, including four children?…
