Obama More Deadly for Afghan Civilians than Bush (in Jan 2009): “Change” Afghans Should Look Upon with Skepticism
Marc W. Herold
The New Year’s first Afghan civilian killed by U.S/NATO action was a boy named Marjan (tr. Coral), killed on January 2nd. The boy had allegedly wandered into a prohibited area in the Deh-Sabz district of Kabul. Marjan was walking home with friends when “international forces” gunned him down. The occupation soldiers got out of a white vehicle, shot Coral and sped away. Marjan is only one of 73-88 civilian Afghans or tribal Pashtuns killed by the U.S/NATO occupation forces during January 2009. Three days later, eight Afghan women, two children and two civilian men were killed by Australian forces in the Chora district of Uruzgan Province. Much official ado has been made in Washington D.C. and in the U.S. corporate press about how the new Administration will be taking far greater care as regards Afghan civilians. Data analyzed below for January 2009 suggests that the deadliness of the Afghan war for civilians under the Obama clock significantly exceeds that registered under the outgoing Bush regime. Boys, women, girls, tribal leaders all have perished at the hands of the foreign occupiers. During January 2009, twelve U.S/NATO forces’ actions (including one road accident where a MRAP military armored vehicle crushed an Afghan civilian car) resulted in 73-88 dead Afghan civilians..

‘The Taliban are closing in’
Chris Sands
As provinces across southern Afghanistan began to fall into the hands of the Taliban, Abdul Jabbar Naeemi realised that sooner or later the unrest would hit closer to home. “The thing was coming from that part of the country with a very powerful wind. We stopped it for almost two years, from the end of 2006 and the whole of 2007,” he said. “In 2008 [the situation was] a little bit disturbed, now I don’t know what’s happened.”…Speaking in English, Mr Naeemi, 41, said insecurity had spread gradually throughout the south. First the rebels gained a foothold in one province, then another and another, until the momentum was finally with them…

All we’ve got left of him
Eva Bartlett | In Gaza
…”When we were in the house, the Israeli army starting bombing in the area,” said Umm Abed. “We were very frightened, we had thought the cease-fire meant we could return home safely. We quickly took whatever clothes and food we could and left the house. I thought Abed was ahead of us. At the school friends told us Abed hadn’t come back. They also said that a drone had fired a missile at our area. People were saying the missile had hit a child and shattered him to pieces. We didn’t know it was Abed.” Umm Abed stopped her recollection to take out the contents of the yellow supermarket bag. “We searched for Abed for 2 days. People were telling us ‘your son was killed’ but we couldn’t find his body, we couldn’t believe it had been Abed.” “Finally,” Abu Abed continued, pulling the tattered pant leg out of the bag, “we found this and knew Abed had been killed. It’s all that was left of him. Since then, since we’ve returned home we find more pieces of him.” The father pulled out a tuft of hair, a dried piece of some internal part of Abed, an inch long piece of sharp shrapnel from the drone’s missile. “Daily we find small bits of him, all over the area. He was blown to bits,” his father says…

How baby Saheed died: Gaza
Mark Klusener
IT IS a scene all too familiar in Gaza — an ambulance screeches to the front of the hospital and paramedics dash out, screaming for help. Crowds surge forward, trying to catch a glimpse of the victim. Suddenly, a paramedic holds something above his head and, for just a second, the crowds fall back, aghast at the horrific spectacle. Held above his head is the blackened, bloated corpse of what appears to be a little girl. Her charred clothes are fused to her body and her limbs are in tatters. She has no legs. The girl’s story never made the headlines; the pictures were too gruesome to air on Western television. Even Arab channels, notorious for showing graphic images of the Gaza conflict, balked at the photographs and most decided not to run them. Had it not been for a local Palestinian camera crew at the hospital, her horrific experience would have gone untold. Paramedic Ali Khalid describes it as the most traumatic thing he has ever seen…

Even Though Gaza Lies in Ruins, the Siege Goes on
Richard Boegner
For reasons no one has yet been able to discover, a water purification system that France donated to the people of Gaza lies stranded on the Israeli-Gaza border, lacking the necessary authorization to enter the strip. “ There were a very great number of steps taken at all levels to try to get the water purification station into Gaza “, French Foreign ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier told Reuters. Yet, the Israeli authorities refused to allow the equipment to enter. As a result, “ we have decided to repatriate it”, the spokesman added… A few days earlier, Israeli soldiers had fired warning shots at a diplomatic convoy leaving Gaza. French and European diplomats were held for six hours at the Erez border point, according to AFP. The diplomats were on a fact-finding mission in Gaza, assessing the needs of the population and the progress of French aid projects on the ground. Israel´s ambassador in Paris was promptly summoned to the French Foreign ministry, and asked for an official explanation… Though Israel´s military operation appears to be over and a tenuous truce still holds, Gaza´s borders remain tense and sealed…

CLINTON BLEW IT
Malcom Lagauche
…Today, all I hear from the Democrats (officials and the general public) is how George Bush is a murderous thug who invaded Iraq under dubious circumstances. The fairy tale is that the honorable Democrats would have handled the situation much differently. Hogwash! During her tenure as Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright stated time and time again that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMD). She was a broken record. However, in 2005, in Sweden, she told a group that if Al Gore was elected president in 2000, he would not have gone to war because “we knew Saddam did not have these weapons.” One of those statements must be a lie. Now, let’s look at how many Iraqis have been killed by the U.S. because of military action and the embargo that was in place from 1990 to 2003. Almost three million…

PFLP warns against illusions about US President Barack Obama, the new face of US imperialism
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine denounced the ongoing strategic partnership of the United States with Israel, warning that the inauguration of President Barack Obama merely changes the image of U.S. imperialism, which plays the same destructive role as it always has. In a press statement issued on January 26, 2009, the PFLP stated that the new U.S. envoy George Mitchell will fail as his predecessors have failed, and as the Israeli/U.S. military machine failed, so long as his purpose is to undermine Palestinian national rights, including the right to return, self-determination, sovereignty and independence, and attempt to end our resistance and our national cause…

Reports of a Sadr/Maliki local-council deal
Missing links
There are now at least two reports, independent of one another, about a deal between Maliki and the Sadrists involving an alliance in one or more provincial councils. There aren’t any details about the nature of the alliance, but one reported preparatory step was the agreement by Maliki for the release—with the acquiecence of the Americans—of Sadrists held prisoner at Camp Bucca…

Gaza Alphabet…A for Apache, B for Blood
Ola Attallah, IOL Correspondent
“A for Apache, B for Blood,” little Shaimaa wrote in her colorful school notebook. It was not a school assignment, but the new alphabet children in the bombed-out Gaza Strip are coming to terms with. “A for apple and B for ball do not work any more, not in the time of war,” said the 10-year-old elementary student. In the notebook, Shaimaa puts a complete alphabet collection, all derived from the deadly offensive which killed more than 1,350 people, including 437 children, and wounded 5,450 others. “C for Coffins, D for Destruction.” Insisting that her collection is more relevant to the vocabulary her schoolmates use in their every day life, Shaimaa says her alphabet should be incorporated into the school curriculum. Amal Yunis, a teacher, did not see Shaimaa’s alphabet collection, but says many in her kindergarten class are already using the very same words…

Iraq tribes threaten to take up arms over poll
By Fadhel al-Badrani Fadhel Al-badrani, Reuters
Tribal sheikhs who helped drive al Qaeda militants out of Western Iraq threatened on Monday to take up arms against the provincial government because of what they said was fraud in Saturday’s provincial polls. The election was the most peaceful in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein, but the west of the country has seen tension between Sunni Arab groups, many of whom boycotted the last provincial ballot in 2005. Anbar province, Iraq’s vast western third, was once the heartland of the Sunni Arab insurgency against U.S. troops but is now largely quiet, thanks to tribal guard units known as Awakening councils that helped drive out al Qaeda militants…

Bomber in police uniform kills 21 Afghan policemen
NOOR KHAN, Associated Press
A suicide bomber in a police uniform detonated his explosives inside a police training center in southern Afghanistan on Monday, killing 21 officers and wounding at least 20, officials said. The Taliban claimed responsibility. The bomber entered the training facility in Tirin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province, as the police reservists were exercising, said Juma Gul Himat, the provincial police chief. The Interior Ministry said the attacker was disguised in a police uniform, a tactic Taliban militants have used in several high-profile attacks…

U.S. Sold Phosphorus Shells Used in Gaza to Israel
Associated Press
The United States sold phosphorus artillery shells made at the Pine Bluff Arsenal to Israel — the same kind of rounds allegedly used against civilians during the recent fighting in Gaza. A State Department official told The Associated Press that the rounds — typically used to light up darkened battlefields or provide smoke cover for combat troops — were most recently shipped to Israel in 2007. International human rights groups accuse the Israeli military of firing the chemical rounds into civilian homes, causing severe burns to those inside and killing at least one woman…

Iraq’s Shocking Human Toll: About 1 Million Killed, 4.5 Million Displaced, 1-2 Million Widows, 5 Million Orphans
John Tirman, The Nation.
…the United Nations estimates that there are about 4.5 million displaced Iraqis — more than half of them refugees — or about one in every six citizens. Only 5 percent have chosen to return to their homes over the past year, a period of reduced violence from the high levels of 2005-07. The availability of healthcare, clean water, functioning schools, jobs and so forth remains elusive. According to Unicef, many provinces report that less than 40 percent of households have access to clean water. More than 40 percent of children in Basra, and more than 70 percent in Baghdad, cannot attend school…

Hamas: If those executed were traitors there was no violation of the law
Ma’an news
“We distinguish between violation of law, and what resistance factions did during the war; the government will not have mercy on traitors,” de facto government spokesperson Tahir An-Nunu responded to questions over the extrajudicial executions and torture rights organizations have accused Hamas of over the past week… The de facto government itself, however, would not take blame for the incidents.

Prosecutor looks at ways to put Israeli officers on trial for Gaza ‘war crimes’
Catherine Philp in Davos and James Hider in Jerusalem, Times
The International Criminal Court is exploring ways to prosecute Israeli commanders over alleged war crimes in Gaza. The alleged crimes include the use of deadly white phosphorus in densely populated civilian areas, as revealed in an investigation by The Times last month. Israel initially denied using the controversial weapon, which causes horrific burns, but was forced later, in the face of mounting evidence, to admit to having deployed it. When Palestinian groups petitioned the ICC this month, its prosecutor said that it was unable to take the case because it had no jurisdiction over Israel, a nonsignatory to the court. Now, however, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, the ICC prosecutor, has told The Times that he is examining the case for Palestinian jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed in Gaza…
