Ceasefires, Israeli-Style
Stephen Lendman
Waging war while talking peace is customary Israeli practice. On January 19, Haaretz headlined: “Israel declares unilateral cease-fire. The security cabinet last night authorized a unilateral cease-fire (to take effect) at 2AM (Sunday morning), ending three weeks of intense fighting.” Declaration notwithstanding, nothing changed. Gaza remains occupied, under siege, and totally isolated. Borders are still closed. On January 28, The New York Times said “truckloads of humanitarian aid” are stuck in Egypt because of Israeli and Cairo restrictions. Little can get in, and attacks merely downshifted to a lower gear. Shortly after Sunday’s announcement, an Israeli aircraft killed a Gaza City resident…

Those People in Gaza: Where Do They Come From, And Why Are They So Mad?
Lawrence of Cyberia
…Jaffa was the most advanced city in Palestine, and had approximately 70,000 Palestinian inhabitants. The U.N. assigned Jaffa to Arab Palestine in UNGAR 181 of 29 November 1947. But Jaffa was always going to be vulnerable to Zionist attack as it was an Arab enclave surrounded by Jewish Palestine, and abutted Tel Aviv, which contained the greatest concentration of Jewish population anywhere in Palestine. In the last four months of British rule, contemporary British Palestine Police and British Army records report the following Zionist attacks on the citizens of Jaffa. I have excluded from the list attacks against military targets…

The Sickening Arrogance and Condescension of Empire
Arthur Silber
Thus speaks the new Imperial Master: President Barack Obama said Sunday that the United States is in a position to place more responsibility in the hands of the Iraqis following provincial elections and a reduction in violence there. “In conversations that I’ve had with the joint chiefs, with people, the commanders on the ground, I think that we have a sense now that the Iraqis just had a very significant election, with no significant violence there, that we are in a position to start putting more responsibility on the Iraqis,” Obama told NBC television. At the time of the initial invasion, Iraq posed no threat of any significance whatsoever to the United States. This blindingly obvious conclusion was clear to millions of people throughout the world — “ordinary” people who examined the publicly available evidence, and who did not rely on “secret” knowledge, which goes by the viciously misnamed designation “intelligence,” which “intelligence” is almost always wrong and which is never the basis for major policy decisions in any event…

Low turnout in Iraq’s election reflects a disillusioned nation
LEILA FADEL, McClatchy Newspapers
Voter turnout in Iraq’s provincial elections Saturday was the lowest in the nation’s short history as a new democracy despite a relative calm across the nation. Only about 7.5 million of more than 14 million registered voters went to the polls. Interviews suggest that the low voter turnout also is an indication of Iraqi disenchantment with a democracy that, so far, has brought them very little…

Video: White phosphorus damage in al-Faraheen
International Solidarity Movement
Footage of a house in Al Faraheen village, damaged during the recent Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. Video shows the upper floor of the house shelled and burnt. Gaza desperately short of food after Israel destroys farmland
Peter Beaumont in Gaza
Gaza’s 1.5 million people are facing a food crisis as a result of the destruction of great areas of farmland during the Israeli invasion. According to the World Food Programme, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation and Palestinian officials, between 35% and 60% of the agriculture industry has been wrecked by the three-week Israeli attack, which followed two years of economic siege. Christine van Nieuwenhuyse, the World Food Programme’s country director, said: “We are hearing that 60% of the land in the north – where the farming was most intensive – may not be exploitable again. It looks to me like a disaster. It is not just farmland, but poultry as well…

Former Hamas member and government official object to calls for dismantling PLO
Ma’an news
Former Hamas spokesperson Ghazi Hamad and former Palestinian Minister of Education Nasser Addin Ash-Sha’ir expressed their opposition to the calls for creating substitute for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Saturday night. Hamad told the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV, “Personally, I don’t agree on deepening Palestinian disagreement. We must resume dialogue which will be strategically beneficial for both Hamas and Fatah as well as the Palestinian national project.” Hamad asserted that his comments represent his own opinion, rather than that of the Hamas leadership…

Jailed PFLP secretary-general calls for Palestinian unity
Ma’an news
The secretary-general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine on Sunday called for competing factions to settle disputes and work toward unity. The secretary-general, Palestinian Legislative Council-member Ahmad Sa’adat, said the failure to successfully reconcile political difference benefits only Israel, claiming that Palestinian disunity is one of its most urgent objectives. During a visit from lawyer Buthaina Duqmaq with the Mandela Prisoners Society, Sa’adat praised Palestinian steadfastness during the Israeli onslaught in Gaza, as well as Bolivia and Venezuala’s recent decisions to sever ties with the Jewish state…

The Gaza Horror Show
Forrest Cookson
…The Israeli government has no intention of enabling the Palestinians to have their own state. Their claim that this is their intention should be seen as long running theatre to pacify the West. A small child can see through this, hence we conclude the Western governments must be witting players in this theatre. It is time for President Obama to close this play and insist the Israeli government stop pretending, and accept a Palestine state. The Israeli government continues to increase the number of Jewish settlers living in the West Bank. The Obama administration must insist on a “no new settlers” policy starting from today, an agreed method of counting settlers, and for Israel to roll back a significant number of settlers within one year. It is an action the Israelis do not want to take; but without such action one cannot believe that the Israeli people are prepared to accept a Palestinian state. The state of Israeli is engaged in the destruction of the Palestinians: to drive them out or to kill them. To drive the Palestinians out the strategy is to reduce their standard of living and increase their poverty; this has been regularly documented by the World Bank…

Afghan Resistance Statement
About new militias
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
…The formation of new militias is testifying the fact that US, NATO and Afghan National Army and Police forces have completely suffered defeat against the Taliban. They are like a drowning person trying to catch any floating object. They are repeating the same communists’ experience.” The brave nation of Afghanistan will not see these irresponsible raiders as protectors and will also not send their sons to these useless ranks. Those who will stand by them will face the same fate as of the hirelings of puppet regime,” it added…

Obama preserves renditions as counter-terrorism tool
The role of the CIA’s controversial prisoner-transfer program may expand, intelligence experts say.
Greg Miller, LATimes
Reporting from Washington — The CIA’s secret prisons are being shuttered. Harsh interrogation techniques are off-limits. And Guantanamo Bay will eventually go back to being a wind-swept naval base on the southeastern corner of Cuba. But even while dismantling these programs, President Obama left intact an equally controversial counter-terrorism tool. Under executive orders issued by Obama recently, the CIA still has authority to carry out what are known as renditions, secret abductions and transfers of prisoners to countries that cooperate with the United States. Current and former U.S. intelligence officials said that the rendition program might be poised to play an expanded role going forward because it was the main remaining mechanism — aside from Predator missile strikes — for taking suspected terrorists off the street…

Palestinian Information Center
Suhail Skik, the general-director of the electricity distribution company in Gaza Strip, has warned Sunday that the main electricity-generating plant in Gaza would completely be suspended due to the lack of the needed fuel to keep it operating. In press statements published Sunday, Skik explained that his company was forced to suspend one of the main generators since Friday due to lack of diesel, reducing 50% of the plant’s generation capacity from 60 mega watts to 30 mega watts only…

Arab media report that Hamas has accepted Egyptian Initiative
Saed Bannoura – IMEM
According to reports published by several Arab media outlets, the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, has accepted the Egyptian Initiative for a truce starting this week. According to the reports, Hamas accepted the deployment of P.A forces, loyal to president Mahmoud Abbas, at the crossings, and that Israel agreed not to intervene in the operation of the crossings. The Rafah border crossing would be opened on Thursday if all agreements on truce were approved and Israel would be expected to declare a one-year truce brokered by Egypt…

E1 settlement project ongoing, Israel invested 200 M. NIS for settlement construction
Saed Bannoura – IMEM
Israel is ongoing with the infrastructure work, which includes roads and homes in the so-called E1 area, in east Jerusalem in order to impose its own vision of any future peace deal by disconnecting geographical contiguity of the Palestinian territories and linking Maali Adumim illegal settlement with East Jerusalem and other settlements around it. Israel planned this construction initially in 1994, and in 1999 the Higher Construction Committee approved the plan but was not implemented due to American pressure…

Obama holds discreet talks with Iran, Syria
AFP
US President Barack Obama has already used experts within the last few months to hold high-level but discreet talks with both Iran and Syria, organizers of the meetings told AFP. Officially, Obama’s overtures toward both Tehran and Damascus have remained limited. In an interview broadcast Monday, Obama said the United States would offer arch-foe Iran an extended hand of diplomacy if the Islamic Republic’s leaders “unclenched their fist”…

Sunni Arabs in Baghdad enclave left off voter rolls
Monte Morin
Reporting from Baghdad — The old man wore a red, checkered headdress and a frown as he left the polling station and shuffled down a bustling street that smelled of roasted meat and sewage. “I have a complaint!” he yelled. “I didn’t find my name.” It was a lament that a group of Western election observers would hear often Saturday afternoon in Adhamiya, a Sunni Arab enclave of Baghdad that was once a hotbed of insurgent activity…

Israel bombs Gaza targets
AlJazeera.net
Israel has bombed several targets in the Gaza Strip, witnesses say, hours after the Israeli government vowed a “disproportionate response” to rocket fire from the Palestinian territory. An Israeli security official confirmed the attack, one of which was on an empty police station, on Sunday. “The air force has carried out several strikes across the Gaza Strip,” he said. There were no reports of casualties or injuries in the attack on the police building…

Tuam Attatra
Eva Bartlett | In Gaza
In Tuam, Attatra, on day one of Israel’s declared, and immediately-violated, ‘cease-fire’ an old woman stood beside the wreckage of her 2 room cement block home. The tracks of the bulldozer which felled her home were still deeply rutted, painfully visible. The house next her to her pile of rubble was still standing, but gutted by fire. Mohammed Abu Khusah had 19 people depending on the house whose kitchen, along with all of the bottom floor rooms, was burnt out. Upstairs, too. Six rooms upstairs completely black-stained and ravaged by fire, five downstairs. Clothes taken out of cupboards and drawers, strewn everywhere. Sniper holes: 2 in front room, 2 in back room, 2 in a room looking onto a wide open area below. Hebrew writing, message unknown but intent suspicious, on many of the walls…

On the other side of the old woman’s rubble, another pile of blocks which had been three 3 level homes, housing 18, 10, and 6 people each.

Heart of Darkness: The Molten Core of Our Modern Madness
Chris Floyd
Something momentous is happening over at “Once Upon a Time.” Arthur Silber has at last begun his long-awaited series on “Tribalism”: the deep-rooted, deep-rutted, largely unconscious mental-emotional structures that lock human beings into such horrifically destructive modes of behavior, on every level, from the most intimate and individual to the most public and universal. The first two parts of the series are up at his blog now, and both are marvelous, trenchant, and moving works. Here you will find that rarest of things: a human voice — distinct, unique, authentic — speaking to you directly, with integrity, of deeply meaningful things. Here you will find a dimension of depth that has few if any parallels in political commentary anywhere today…

Afghans Protest After US Raid Kills Civilians
Jason Ditz
…Hundreds of Afghan protesters took to the streets Sunday in protest over a US raid they said led to the deaths of at least two civilians, the latest in a string to US raids which have killed a large number of innocent civilians. During the US raid in the Ghazni Province of Afghanistan, soldiers forced their way into a home, killing two occupants. The military claimed that both were militants and that they ordered everyone out of the home before the attacks. Villagers insist as many as six civilians were killed in the operation…
