‘We could hear their bodies burning’
By Bilal Badwan, Special to Gulf News
“We could hear their bodies burning,” 27-year-old Fadia Al Najjar recounts. As Israeli planes poured what is now confirmed as DIME (Dense Inert Metal Explosive) munitions on Gaza residents, Fadia recounts the night of terror her and her family endured. “We were terrified. We thought we were going to burn to death,” she said. Fadia and her husband Ghanem, who is a paramedic, live in the Khaza’a neighborhood. While the munitions were falling, Ghanem had been dispatched to attend to the wounded. While on duty he inhaled the white smoke. “Neighbours were screaming, asking for help; the fire was spreading,” she remembers. “I woke up my kids, got them to my parents’ house, hoping to find a safer place.”..

Spent shells prove Israeli use of white phosphorus, Gaza doctors say
Sheera Frenkel, Times
Remnants of an Israeli white phosphorus shell, identified by the marking on the outer casing — M825A1 — have been found in the village of Sheikh Ajilin in western Gaza. Witnesses in Gaza said that the shell was fired on January 9 and was taken indoors as evidence. They recalled seeing thick smoke and smelling a strong odour in keeping with the garlic-like smell associated with white phosphorus. Hebrew writing on the shell casing reads “exploding smoke” — the term the Israeli army uses for white phosphorus. Doctors who examined the shell said that it appeared to include phosphorus residue…

Gaza 2009: betrayal and cowardice brought us to this
“What we have done is to start a running sore in the East, and no-one can tell how far that sore will extend” s
STUART LITTLEWOOD
Twice running we have stood back and watched. Twice in two years – 2006 Lebanon and 2008/9 Gaza – the British government has done nothing to intervene and indicate to Israel in unmistaken terms that they go too far – well beyond what human decency allows and what we as a nation will stand for – and that there are consequences. Those consequences should include a drastic downgrading of our relationship on all levels and an end to economic and military co-operation. If we had no leverage it would still be incumbent on us to initiate moves to uphold international law, human rights and UN resolutions, and to mobilise immediate relief for the civilian community even if we had to land it on Gaza’s beach. After all we – Britain – are the cause of the trouble. We – Britain – sowed the seed and created the conditions for events that would lead to 60 years of dispossession and torment for the Palestinians and 60 years of brutal expansionism and colonization by the Israelis at their expense. But there’s leverage a-plenty, and it’s time we used it. Israel needs us, and Europe, more than we need Israel…

Zio-Nazi regime hopes world will forget Gaza genocide soon
Khalid Amayreh from Occupied Palestine
With the holocaust-like Israeli onslaught in Gaza entering its fourth week, and with thousands of Palestinian civilians mercilessly killed and maimed by the Israeli war machine while hundreds others still buried under rubble, Israel is planning a public relations campaign aimed at “making the world forget the bad images” from Gaza very soon. The Israeli Foreign Ministry this week contacted an American PR firm requesting a “detailed PR plan” that would enhance Israel’s image following the Gaza blitz …

A pall of black smoke rose from the UN compound, visible across Gaza City. Flour spilled on the ground and mixed with soot as Palestinian firefighters tried to douse the flames. “The main warehouse was badly damaged by what appeared to be white phosphorus shells,” UN humanitarian affairs chief John Holmes said at a news briefing in New York…

Israel Threatens to Shoot Unarmed Civilians aboard Mercy Ship
FREE GAZA MOVEMENT
The Israeli navy today threatened to kill unarmed civilians aboard a mercy ship on its way to deliver medical supplies and doctors to besieged Gaza. The Free Gaza Movement ship, SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, left Cyprus Wednesday morning carrying doctors, journalists, human rights workers, and parliamentarians. The ship also carried over a ton of desperately needed medicines donated by the European Campaign to Break the Siege, and intended for overwhelmed hospitals in the Gaza Strip. At the request of the ship’s organizers the passenger list and manifest were publicly released, and Cypriot authorities searched the boat prior to its departure in order to certify that it only carried humanitarian items. The organizers also sent an official notification to the Israeli government of their intent to break through the blockade of Gaza. At roughly 3am UST (1am GMT), in international waters 100 miles off the coast of Gaza, at least five Israeli gunboats surrounded the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY and began recklessly cutting in front of the slow-moving civilian craft…

Ismail Haniyeh: My message to the West – Israel must stop the slaughter
Ismail Haniyeh, Prime Minister of Gaza
…There is only one way forward and no other. Our condition for a new ceasefire is clear and simple. Israel must end its criminal war and slaughter of our people, lift completely and unconditionally its illegal siege of the Gaza Strip, open all our border crossings and completely withdraw from Gaza. After this we would consider future options. Ultimately, the Palestinians are a people struggling for freedom from occupation and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital and the return of refugees to their villages from which they were expelled. Whatever the cost, the continuation of Israel’s massacres will neither break our will nor our aspiration for freedom and independence…

Israel Bars Arab Parties From Election
Left Claims Ban is ‘Patriotic’
Jonathan Cook
The only three Arab parties represented in the Israeli parliament vowed yesterday to fight a decision by the Central Elections Committee to bar them from running in next month’s general election. In an unprecedented move signaling a further breakdown in Jewish-Arab relations inside Israel, all the main Jewish parties voted on Monday for the blanket disqualification. Several committee members equated the Arab parties’ vocal support for the Gazan people with support for terrorism. The decision follows the arrest of at least 600 Arab demonstrators since the outbreak of the Gaza offensive and the interrogation by the secret police of dozens of Arab community leaders…
