FOCUSED LETHALITY:Phosphorous Bomb Rain Over Northern Gaza
Hiyam Noir, PalestineFreeVoice
Blankets of white clouds covered the skies over Gaza, including the refuge camps in Khan Younis, Beit Lahia and Gaza City.On Saturday Israeli F16 warplanes launched attacks using phosphorus bombs on the Block 2 section inside the densely populated Jabalya Refuge Camp. Many residents of Jabalya escaped the area covering their faces, searching for a safe shelter in the home of relatives and friends in the neighboring Beit Lahia from the Israelis “Cast Lead Operation”. Gaza has always been the Israelis “testing ground” – from nerve agents used in Khan Younis in 2003, to Sonic Boom “phantom air raids”,and the use of DIME in the Israelis massacre called “ Operation Summer Rain” over Gaza year 2006. In the dark night the terrifying sound of Drones [small, pilot less planes,] can be heard overflying the northern parts of Gaza Strip…

Israel’s new bombs from the eyes of their victims
Ma’an news
Everything was on fire; houses, sheds, trees. Bombs, too, were everywhere, and with them came the white clouds. White phosphorous, the doctors are now saying, but that’s disputed in Israel. But for sure it was a night of terror. We were terrified. We thought we were going to burn to death. Bombs were everywhere. That’s what 27-year-old Fadia Al-Najjar kept saying. She’s from Khaza’a; she was telling us what kind of horrific night she and her family had just gone through. While explaining what had happened, Fadia stood next to her paramedic husband Ghanem, now surrounded by other medics, desperately struggling to save his life after he was caught in an airstrike unlike he had ever seen before. Ghanem was incapacitated while on duty trying to bring injured Palestinians to the hospital. There had been calls reporting mysterious white smoke in the latest airstrike, and Ghanem was dispatched to attend to the wounded. He was on duty when he inhaled some of the smoke. “The shelling with phosphorous bombs started in Khaza’a. Two of the bombs hit the area around our house,” Fadia explained. She recalled how the fire spread quickly throughout the home, and white smoke billowed out the windows…

Special: White Phosphorus and its use in Gaza
Dr. Mazen Qumssiya – for the Applied Research Institute of Jerusalem
White Phosphorus (P4) is a waxy fat soluble colorless or slightly yellow solid with a garlic smell that is not naturally occurring but is produced in the laboratory. It is highly reactive with oxygen (ignites spontaneously upon drying and exposure to air) producing compounds like P4O6 (phosphorus pentoxide) and P4O10 which upon contact with water becomes oxophosphoric acids (alternatively direct reaction with water can lead to phosphoric acid HPO4 through some intermediate compounds)…

Is Gaza a testing ground for experimental weapons?
“create as much mutilation as possible to terrorise the civilian population”
Jonathan Cook
Concerns about Israel’s use of non-conventional and experimental weapons in the Gaza Strip are growing, with evasive comments from spokesmen and reluctance to allow independent journalists inside the tiny enclave only fuelling speculation.
The most prominent controversy is over the use of shells containing white phosphorus, which causes horrific burns when it comes into contact with skin. Under international law, phosphorus is allowed as a smokescreen to protect soldiers but treated as a chemical weapon when used against civilians… One such munition may be Dime, or dense inert metal explosive, a weapon recently developed by the US army to create a powerful and lethal blast over a small area. The munition is supposed to still be in the development stage and is not yet regulated. There are fears, however, that Israel may have received a green light from the US military to treat Gaza as a testing ground. “We have seen Gaza used as a laboratory for testing what I call weapons from hell,” said David Halpin, a retired British surgeon and trauma specialist who has visited Gaza on several occasions to investigate unusual injuries suffered by Gazans. “I fear the thinking in Israel is that it is in its interests to create as much mutilation as possible to terrorise the civilian population in the hope they will turn against Hamas.”..

THE ANATOMY OF A MASSACRE
Malcom Lagauche
In a few days, we will experience the 18th anniversary of the beginning of the first Gulf War. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten that era. Today, the news from Iraq mentions nothing about the first wave of destruction of the country. When the first bomb fell on Iraq at 2:00am on January 17, 1991, the United States began the military implementation of years of deceit and dirty tricks to attain a permanent foothold in the Middle East. George Bush I enlisted, coerced and paid 27 other nations to help massacre Iraq, depriving these newly-won allies of any ethical high ground…

Video: Weapons expert talks on Israel ‘phosphorus use’ – 13 Jan 09
AlJazeera.net
Allegations of the use of white phosphorus have been made against Israel in their attack on the Gaza Strip and firework-like explosions during the offensive like those made when using the chemical have been widely seen. Al Jazeeras Jacky Rowland spoke with Marc Garlasco, a weapons expert, on the border with Gaza about the viability of these claims…

Israeli politician calls for nuclear strike on Gaza
Ma’an news
Right-wing Israeli politician Avigdor Lieberman proposed a “solution” to the war in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday saying, “Israel won’t be secure so long as Hamas is in power, and therefore we need to come to a decision that we will break the will of Hamas to keep fighting.” “We must continue to fight Hamas just like the United States did with the Japanese in World War II,” Lieberman added…

Demands grow for Gaza war crimes investigation
Chris McGreal, Guardian
Israel is facing growing demands from senior UN officials and human rights groups for an international war crimes investigation in Gaza over allegations such as the “reckless and indiscriminate” shelling of residential areas and use of Palestinian families as human shields by soldiers. With the death toll from the 17-day Israeli assault on Gaza climbing above 900, pressure is increasing for an independent inquiry into specific incidents, such as the shelling of a UN school turned refugee centre where about 40 people died, as well as the question of whether the military tactics used by Israel systematically breached humanitarian law…

East Jerusalem family being replaced by settlers
Maisa Abu Ghazaleh , PNN
While our local press is necessarily focusing on the Gaza Strip, the aggressions of Israeli occupation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have not waned. Awaiting an unknown fate is Abdel Moati Abu Qutaysh after the Israeli-controlled Jerusalem District Court rejected an appeal to save his home. Thousands of Palestinians in East Jerusalem have faced similar crises. The Sheikh Jarrah resident of East Jerusalem was told by a Magistrate Court that he would have to leave his family home. He appealed the evacuation order by presenting legal documentation of ownership of the home that he inherited from his father. The Israeli administration is claiming that the 90 square meter property belongs to Jewish settlers. Abu Qutaysh’s parents lived in the home since the Israelis forced them from what is now Israeli-controlled West Jerusalem…

Head Cases: History’s Clear Answer to the Torture Debate
Chris Floyd
…Perhaps the strangest thing about the torture “debate” is that there is any debate at all over “what to do” about those who ordered the crimes to be committed. Scott Horton at Harper’s explains what hundreds of years of Anglo-American jurisprudence clearly says about heads of state who order and countenance torture: they should be tried, and if convicted, executed. In fact, the verdict passed on the last head of state in this legal tradition who was found guilty of torture was that “he be taken to a place of execution, where his head was to be severed from his body by an axe.” What’s more, this head of state — King Charles II — was specifically charged with the same crime that Bush and Cheney have confessed to: authorizing the “torture and brutal mistreatment of prisoners taken in wartime,” as Horton notes. So where’s the debate? Our laws, our traditions, all the long-held, deeply-rooted moral and civic principles to which our leaders loudly pledge fealty are clear: when a government official authorizes torture, he should be executed…

Reports: Only 30 of 200 Gazans seized during invasion are linked to armed groups
Ma’an news
Only 30 of the 200 Palestinians seized by the Israeli army throughout the war in Gaza have been linked to Hamas or other armed groups, Israeli media reported on Tuesday. According to the reports, Israeli authorities have also put on hold a plan to open a new wing of the Negev prison camp in which many Palestinians are held. The detainees are reportedly being treated as illegal combatants, and will be placed in administrative detention, a practice under which Palestinians can be held indefinitely without trial…

Haniya salutes Gaza steadfastness, says Palestinians will emerge victorious
From Khalid Amayreh in occupied Palestine
Democratically-elected Prime Minister Ismael Haniya on Monday saluted the “legendary steadfastness” of the people of Gaza in the face of the 17-day Nazi-like Israeli onslaught against the coastal enclave which has killed and maimed thousands of Palestinians, mostly innocent civilians, and wreaked rampant havoc and destruction. Speaking on the al-Aqsa satellite TV, Haniya said the Palestinian blood spilled by the “criminals” would not go in vain. “This blood, this pain, will deliver the Palestinian people and the Arab-Muslim Umma (community) from this state of affair. It will be a turning point leading up to new horizons of dignity and freedom for our people.”…

Gaza clinics destroyed by raids
Donald Macintyre, Independent
Israeli warplanes have attacked two fully equipped medical clinics in Gaza, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage, the Christian organisations which fund them reported yesterday. The Catholic relief group Caritas said its clinic in the al-Meghazi area of Gaza had been “completely destroyed” by a missile on Friday, and that 20 nearby homes had been damaged. Because local families had already fled their homes, no one was hurt, Caritas said, but equipment worth $10,000 (£6,700) was lost. Twenty-fours later, another clinic funded by Christian Aid was also demolished in an air strike; it followed a telephone warning to the building’s owners to leave within 15 minutes…

THE RIGHTEOUS JEWS OF TODAY
Desertpeace
At Yad Vashem, in Jerusalem, there is an entire area dedicated to the memory of Righteous Gentiles. ‘The Righteous honored by Yad Vashem come from 44 countries; they are Christians from all denominations as well as Muslims, religious and agnostic, men and women, people from all walks of life, of all ages, educated professionals and illiterate peasants, rich and poor. The only common denominator is the humanity and the courage they displayed by standing up for their moral principles.’ Today, we see a new phenomenon, Righteous Jews, standing up and displaying THEIR moral principles against the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza by the so-called ‘Jewish State’…… Jews that proudly and bravely say to the world, to Israel in particular, NOT IN MY NAME! Below are photos of some of the 500 who demonstrated in New York City last night…

Displaced and desperate in Gaza
By Safa Joudeh in Gaza
Jalal’s story echoes the accounts I have heard many times before from my grandfather and others who lived through the Palestinian ‘nakba’ or catastrophe in 1948. “We fled the bombing of British warplanes, we locked our house and hid in the hills for days, each day thinking that tomorrow we would return, but tomorrow never came,” my grandfather tells me. “It has been 60 years and now it is happening again. This time we can’t walk south to escape the bombing, like we walked from Asdood to Gaza. This time they want us to jump into the sea. “But we won’t, we’ll die standing with our heads held high this time. We’ve learned from the past that it’s better to die defending than to run and live…

Sham, Shock and Awe: False Peace Process Bears Bitter Fruit in Gaza
Chris Floyd
The deepening agony in Gaza may be shocking, but it is not surprising. It is the inevitable outcome of what Henry Siegman — a thoroughly Establishment figure and former CFR stalwart — has called “the most spectacular deception in modern diplomatic history”: the so-called “Middle East peace process.” As Siegman makes clear, the “peace process” has been a deliberate sham on the part of Israeli leaders, abetted every step of the way by the knowing collusion of American, British and European governments…

Israel, Hamas locked in fierce Gaza City clashes
AFP
Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen fought fierce night-time clashes around the Gaza Strip early on Tuesday, as a war on Hamas that had killed more than 900 Palestinians entered its 18th day. Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, told AFP its forces had destroyed two Israeli tanks in the Gaza City neighbourhood of Zeitun, using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). They also said a number of soldiers were killed in the village of Khuzaa, east of Khan Yunis near the Israeli border. But an army spokesman denied any tanks had been knocked out and said there was no report of Israeli casualties…

Blueprint for Gaza Invasion was Planned Long Ago
Israel Ponders the Third Stage
JONATHAN COOK
As Israel rejected the terms of the proposed United Nations ceasefire at the weekend, Israeli military analysts were speculating on the nature of the next stage of the attack on Gaza, or the “third phase” of the fighting as it is being referred to. Having struck thousands of targets from the air in the first phase, followed by a ground invasion that saw troops push into much of Gaza, a third phase would involve a significant expansion of these operations…

Israeli warplanes continue to drop bombs ahead of advancing toops in southwestern Gaza City – 27 dead today, 930 total
Ma’an news
Israeli troop movement was focused on the south-western Gaza City neighborhood of Tel Al-Hawwah overnight Monday, with reports of 27 more dead mostly from clashes in the Az-Zaytoun and Tel Al-Hawwah neighborhoods. The death toll of 18 days of Israeli attacks is 930, with more than 4,280 injured. Israeli troops invaded and ransacked several homes in the southern Gaza City neighborhood of Tel Al-Hawwah, gathering groups of soldiers on the roofs of homes and firing on scared locals. At least four were killed in the attack. As usual the ground attacks were preceded by air and tank fire. Missiles struck the An-Nasser home as well as the Abd Al-Carpentry workshop in Tel Al-Hawwah. Many residents were fleeing their homes in the hill-top area overlooking the Gaza shore as Israeli troops overran the area…
