Remember Gaza: One of History’s Terror Bombing Victims

Remember Gaza: One of History’s Terror Bombing Victims
Stephen Lendman
History’s terror bombings. This article reviews some of the most infamous: — Guernica – 1937; — the London Blitz – 1940 – 41; — Dresden – 1945; — Tokyo – 1945; — Hiroshima and Nagasaki – 1945; — North Korea – 1950 – 53; — Southeast Asia – 1964 – 73; — Iraq – 1991 to the present; — Serbia/Kosovo – 1999; — Afghanistan – 2001 to the present; — Lebanon – 1982 and 2006; and — Gaza – 2008 – 09. Strategic bombing involves destroying an adversary’s economic and military ability to wage war. It targets its war making capacity and related infrastructure. Terror bombing is another matter. It’s against civilians to break their morale, cause panic, weaken an enemy’s will to fight, and inflict mass casualties and punishment…

Internationally prohibited weapons used against Gaza Strip
PNN
…Yesterday’s reports on the use of phosphorus bombs have been confirmed. Children with deep flesh burns have joined those of the severely dismembered and others who arrive at hospitals in unrecognizable condition. The reality is more horrifying than imaginable for most with the United Nations saying that the Gaza Strip was a “living hell.” “The injuries here demonstrate that Israel is using prohibited weapons,” Dr. Ashour told Al Sharq Al Awsat. A Norwegian volunteer working in the hospital, who has also worked in the emergency rooms of Iraq during US invasions, reiterated that the nature of the wounds confirms the use of explosive materials containing carcinogenic substances. Dr. Ashour and the Norwegian doctor certified that people infected by these types of explosives require treatment every six months in order to prevent the development of cancerous tumors…

Gaza Civilians Attacked With White Phosphorus & DIME
Hassan El-Najjar
…The Israeli terrorist forces used the internationally prohibited weapons, like white phosphorus bombs, against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. The explosion of this kind of bombs results in burning the three layers of victims’ skin to reach internal organs. Most of yesterday’s victims were children. Al-Jazeera TV aired footage of several victims of these white phosphorus bombs, among them was a teenage girl, Jamila Al-Habash, who had both of her legs amputated. Dr. Raed Al-’Areeny from Al-Shaifa Hospital was interviewed to explain what happened to her. He said that the chemical materials used in this kind of bombs keep interacting with the skin and flesh of the victim, penetrating deep to the bones, which are melted completely, leading to the amputation. Dr. Areeny also mentioned that there is a new American weapon being tested on the Palestinians in Gaza, called DIME. The assaulted victims reach to the hospital, without any outside symptoms. When victims are X-rayed, doctors don’t see anything. However, in a short period of time, victims start to bleed internally, as their internal organs start to show damages. Then, they die before doctors can do anything to rescue them…

“Our humanity is incomplete,” says Queen Rania
A personal challenge for every Western politician
STUART LITTLEWOOD
…So it was a relief when Queen Rania Al Abdullah, UNICEF’s Eminent Advocate for Children, injected common sense into the situation by issuing a statement last week to remind the world of the many human rights that have been trampled in Palestine. She emphasized two: *All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights (Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights), * Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person (Article 3). “Over the past 41 years, the people of Gaza have been living under occupation,” she said. “Over the past 18 months, they have been living under siege. And for the past 10 days, the people of Gaza have been subject to a cruel and continuous military attack. Either the declaration is not so universal, or the people of Gaza are not human beings, worthy of the same ‘universal’ rights. “This is the message the world is sending out today. Not only is there a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, there is a crisis in our global humanity… This is the message I am sending world leaders: Our humanity is incomplete when children, irrespective of nationality, are victims of military operations.” OUR HUMANITY IS INCOMPLETE… That is a message for every Western politician to wrestle with and something for Israel’s supporters to reflect on, now being a good time to disband and renounce their association with the criminal regime…

UN watchdog condemns war on Gaza
AlJazeera.net
A resolution condemning Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has been adopted by the UN Human Rights Council. The non-binding resolution, approved in Geneva on Monday, said Israel’s operation had “resulted in massive violations of human rights of the Palestinian people”. More than 900 Palestinians have died during the fighting, many of them women and children, and a further 4,100 have been wounded. At least 25,000 have been displaced due to the ongoing bombardment, but are unable to flee the overcrowded territory as crossing points remain closed…

Shelled family recounts Gaza horror
AlJazeera.net
Ahmed Samouni witnessed what many are calling a massacre, after being left for days amidst the dead bodies of his mother and four brothers. The horror that the 16-year-old has seen is hard for him to put into words, but the effects are written all over his face. “It was the third missile I remember. The other ones had killed my elder brother and injured people, they kept bleeding. But the third missile, that killed them all,” he said. “My brother was bleeding so much and right in front of my eyes he died. My other brother Ismail, he also bled to death,” he narrated in between sobs. “My mum and my youngest brother, they are gone. Four brothers and my mother, dead. May God give them peace.” On January 7, paramedics brought back the dead and injured from the Samouni and other houses nearby, after they had spent four days trapped in their home…

In Solidarity with Palestinian Freedom Fighters
Truth is Beauty
… People who are largely unarmed and trapped in a concentration refugee camp, who are fighting for their very survival, cannot be considered terrorists by people interested in fairness. Unless you consider that the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto were terrorists and the Nazis were the freedom fighters. You can’t have it both ways. If Jews in Warsaw were freedom fighters, then the Palestinians have every right to fight against their oppressors, too. The Palestinians have the right to resist their own genocide. And that’s exactly what they are doing. All true lovers of freedom and  justice must stand in solidarity with the brave Palestinian freedom fighters…

Palestinian resistance continues to fire home-made shells at Israeli targets near Gaza
Ghassan Bannoura – IMEMC
Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza continued to target Israeli areas on Monday with homemade shells in response to the ongoing military attacks on Gaza. The al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, announced that its fighters managed to fire at least one Grad Missile at an Israeli military site near the Gaza border, adding that another group of its fighter targeted Israeli tanks in Gaza city with a homemade roadside bomb. Meanwhile, Fatah fighters and leftist groups reported that they fired at least five homemade shells at areas in northern Israel on Sunday night and Monday morning. All groups said that the attacks will continue as long as Israel proceeds with its military operation on the Gaza Strip, which entered its 17th day on Monday…

Israel Set to Ban Arab Opposition Party From Elections
Jason Ditz
As a popular party with Israel’s large Arab minority, the Balad Party has been seen as a prime mover behind the nation’s domestic antiwar movement. Though officials have repeatedly warned them that “there is a limit to democracy” in Israel, this opposition party never seems to have fully learned its lesson. “The goals of Hamas and Balad are the same: to destroy Israel,” insists the always bellicose Yisrael Beitenu chairman Avigdor Lieberman, who favors a ban on the party. The Balad Party’s stated goal is to “transform the state of Israel into a democracy for all its citizens, irrespective of national or ethnic identity,” a goal which makes it dangerously radical in a state which views its non-Jewish citizens as second-class in the best of times and traitors during most wars…

There seems to be some difficulty in getting news reports out of Iraq this weekend, as some of the incidents that took place yesterday were not reported until today. We Support the Resistance in Gaza
Qawem Coalition
…”Israel” is a colonial settler state founded on the racist ideology of zionism. It has followed the expansionist and genocidal logic of white supremacist, settler-colonialism for over 60 years: its aim is to completely eradicate the indigenous population — either by “transfer” or by total annihilation. Historically, the only force that has stood between the zionists and the completion of this goal has been the armed resistance. It was the armed resistance of Palestinians in the 1930s that first forced the British to reconsider their goal of establishing a zionist state in Palestine. Armed resistance forced Ariel Sharon to scrap his plan in 2000 of bringing a million new settlers into the West Bank. Armed resistance drove Israel out of South Lebanon, and forced 5,000 settlers out of Gaza. In the absence of armed resistance, zionist expansion has continued unhindered and without international attention–as in the case of the Naqab, where Bedouins have been driven from their traditional lands…

Israel using Gaza as ‘test laboratory’ for new weapon: medics
AFP
Israel is testing a new “extremely nasty” type of weapon in Gaza, two medics charged as they returned home to Norway Monday after spending 10 days working at a hospital in the war-torn Palestinian territory. “There’s a very strong suspicion I think that Gaza is now being used as a test laboratory for new weapons,” Mads Gilbert told reporters at Oslo’s Gardermoen airport, commenting on the kinds of injuries he and his colleague Erik Fosse had seen while working at the Shifa Hospital in Gaza. The two medics, who were sent into the war zone by the pro-Palestinian aid organisation NORWAC on December 31, said they had seen clear signs that Dense Inert Metal Explosives (DIME), an experimental kind of explosive, were being used in Gaza… The weapon “causes the tissue to be torn from the flesh. It looks very different (from a shrapnel injury). I have seen and treated a lot of different injuries for the last 30 years in different war zones, and this looks completely different,” said Fosse, 58…

The Ceasefire: Finding Bodies in Gaza
By Ewa Jasiewicz – Beit Hanoun and Jabaliya, Gaza
…I asked the paramedics, what happened when they went to collect bodies and the injured from the areas where street fighting is taking place, places like Tel Al Zater, Salahadeen Street, Atahtura, Azbet Abu Rubbu – closed to everyone and anyone but the Israeli Occupation Forces. During 1-4pm there is supposed to be a ceasefire and co-ordination between paramedics and the Israeli army, through the Red Cross. Of the three paramedics I asked, all of their replies were the same. ‘We saw noone’. ‘It was like a ghost town’. Despite being finding bodies over the past week, including one baby which had been half eaten by dogs – photos, film and witnesses at Kamal Adwan confirm it – and bodies which had been run over by tanks, when they went yesterday, they found nobody, and came back to base empty handed. ‘I think the Israelis must have taken the bodies away, I think they must have taken them away by bulldozer and buried them’. The terrifying this is that there are still people trapped in their homes if their homes are still standing, without food, water, or electricity…

Beyond Grief and Rage: Palestine and the Politics of Resistance
Robert Jensen
…Let’s start by remembering the other places where that suffering has been so intense: Iraq, Afghanistan, Latin America, southern Africa, southeast Asia. I mention those places in particular because much of the suffering there has been a result, directly or indirectly, of U.S. economic, military, and foreign policy. Those are some of the places that have borne the brunt of the U.S. empire’s violence since the end of World War II…Our first task is to refuse to forget, which means recognizing that, in the context of U.S. policy, there is nothing special about Palestine. It is one place where the West and its surrogates have used organized violence to achieve political and economic aims. U.S. support for Israel’s occupation of Palestine has to be seen as part of that imperial project; those of us in the United States who want to defend Palestine have to resist the U.S. empire…

How can anyone watching Gaza burn escape the bitter realization that history repeats itself? Many have compared Israel ’s treatment of Palestinians to Apartheid South Africa . Gaza war comparable to Sabra and Shatila massacre: medics

Israel’s offensive in Gaza can be compared to the massacre of Palestinian refugees by Israeli-backed Lebanese militiamen in 1982, two medics said Monday as they returned to Norway after working 10 days at a Gaza hospital. “Gaza in 2009 is becoming a new bloody chapter in Palestinian and Middle Eastern history that is, unfortunately, comparable to Sabra and Shatila,” Mads Gilbert told reporters at Oslo’s Gardermoen airport, referring to a three-day massacre at two Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut 27 years ago…

…Whatever else it may achieve, Israel’s onslaught against women, children and the ridiculously mis-matched rag-tag “army” of Hamas men who are trying to protect them—whatever else it may accomplish, it has done this: It has destroyed the 60-year plus rationale of the Holocaust as Israel’s raison d’etre. The Zionist state has ensured that any claims it may have had against a war-weary world that “allowed” the Holocaust to happen must now be cancelled. Whatever moral high-ground Jews may have had to carve out of the Ottoman Empire a piece of their ancient kingdoms of Judah and Israel is now ground turning to sludge beneath their war boots, their tanks, their US-paid-for F-16’s, their naval bombardments, their expansionist settlements, their apartheid policies…

B. Yehoshua to Meir Shalev and scores of others. Naming names and denouncing individually every prominent Israeli intellectual who has publicly endorsed their elected officials’ wide-eyed barbarism, and then categorically boycotting their universities and colleges, film festivals and cultural institutions, is the single most important act of solidarity that their counterparts can do around the world. 1.5 million impoverished human beings have been choked to death in Gaza and this obscenity that calls itself “Israeli intellectuals” does not even blink and says it is the Hamas’ fault that they are being slaughtered in their hundreds by the Israeli military…

BBC reports, “Hamas’s military machine was taking “serious punishment” and that Israel was “advancing towards the end game”, according to Israeli spokesman Mark Regev. Perhaps. In the article provided below, Israel’s attack could make Hamas stronger, Sattor Kassem, states that Israel thought its motherless war on Gaza would only last 2-3 days. With this statement, he apparently assumes that in their “blueprint” for the war, planning of which began 18 months ago, they meant only to hit Hamas targets and wipe out their ability to fire Qassam rockets…

Video: Israel is targeting medics
Eva Bartlett writing from the occupied Gaza Strip, Live from Palestine
On 7 January, as Spanish human rights advocate and documentary filmmaker, Alberto Arce, and I accompanied Palestinian medics to retrieve the body of a man shot earlier by invading Israeli forces, we were also shot at as the medics carried the body towards the ambulance. It was in Dawwar Zimmo, eastern Jabaliya, near the area which has been occupied by Israeli soldiers since the land invasion began. It’s an area where tens are thought to have been seriously injured by bombing and shooting by the Israeli army, and where many, many more will lie dead, uncollected for days, or weeks, out of reach of the medics whose duty is to retrieve them. Hassan al-Attal and Jamal had gotten out of the ambulance, a clearly-marked 101 ambulance, and approached the corpse lying in the middle of the street. They wore their Palestine Red Crescent Society uniforms — Hassan’s was bright red with reflective tape, Jamal’s bright orange and white, also with reflective tape — and approached slowly, hands empty except a stretcher to take away the body…

In Gaza, Hippocrates is Dead
Vittorio Arrigoni, Guerrilla Radio Blog
In Gaza, a firing squad put Hippocrates up against a wall, aimed and fired. The absurd declarations of an Israeli secret services’ spokesman, according to which the army was given the green light in firing at ambulances because they allegedly carried terrorists, is an illustration of the value that Israel assigns to human life these days – the lives of their enemies, that is. It’s worth revisiting what’s stated in the Hippocratic Oath, which every doctor swears upon before starting to practice the profession. The following passages are especially worthy of note: “I solemnly pledge myself to consecrate my life to the service of humanity. I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity. The health and life of my patient will be my first consideration. I will cure all patients with the same diligence and commitment. I will not permit considerations of religion, nationality, race, party politics, or social standing to intervene between my duty and my patient.” Seven doctors and voluntary nurses have been killed from the start of the bombing campaign, and about ten ambulances were shot at by the Israeli artillery…
