Report direct from Gaza
Day 13 of Israeli War On Gaza: Death toll 770, injured 3200 and most of them Civilians
Sameh A. Habeeb
I have got three calls from anonymous persons stop blogging or I would be killed. Yet, I would keep on this track. Some of you dowonder how I send news in such conditions. I really suffer a lot to send you this update due to lack of power. I go around 4 kilometers a day in this cruel war where I charge my laptop battery to be able to send this work! This is very risky since shells rain down and drones hover over me! I will keep this up. This is a new report for the 13th day of Gaza War and the outcomes of Israeli invasion…

Report: US military re-supplying Israel with ammunition through Greece
Saed Bannoura – IMEM
As the Israeli military continues to pound the crowded, impoverished and imprisoned population of the Gaza Strip with the full force of its military might, Israel’s strongest ally, the United States, announced plans to ship large amounts of ammunition to the Israeli forces – as it did during Israel’s 2006 invasion of Lebanon, when the Israelis ran out of (internationally-banned) cluster bombs, and the US shipped them tens of thousands more…

A Third Intifada?
Riding on Fire
EWA JASIEWICZ
I’ve been working with the Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance services in Jabaliya, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya for the past 5 days and nights. For the past five days the Red Cross and the Red Crescent emergency services have been blocked from evacuating the injured and the dead from key areas surrounding Jabaliya and Gaza City. Special Forces have occupied houses in the areas of Zeitoun, Atarturah, Zoumo and Salahedeen. Paramedic Ali Khalil’s team was shot at on Monday afternoon. He told me, ‘We had been told we had the go-ahead from the Israeli army through co-ordination with the Red Cross but when we arrived at the area we were shot at. We had to turn back’. Yesterday afternoon, a medical volunteer, Hassan, was shot in the leg as he and his colleague had to drop the stretcher they were carrying after coming under Israeli sniper fire. There are reports of scores of dead bodies lying in the streets un-claimed. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society estimates there are 230 injured which they haven’t been able to pick up…

Two Eyewitness Reports From Palestinians Inside Gaza
Lawrence of Cyberia
Freelance journalist Ben White forwards two reports of what is happening inside the Gaza Strip; the first from a Palestinian surgeon, Dr Attallah, who works at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the second from a Palestinian friend who has been in contact with his father in Gaza City: 1. The numbers of death and injured reported in the media are far below reality as the media is not able to cover incidents as they unfold. I know of cases where homes were surrounded by the Israeli army and people inside gave themselves up and were shot anyway when they exited. When bakeries open there are thousands lining up to get their share of bread. A clinic near my hospital was hit by an Israeli missile earlier today. What is taking place is a massacre, more than a massacre. Almost all the cases I saw today at the hospital were civilians, many women and children. This is not an attack on Hamas, it is on the most innocent of people in Gaza …

Children Survive the Israeli Destruction
Kawther Salam
The story of the eight children of Al-Samouni family who survived six days together with their beloved dead family under the rubble of their house in Gaza, and the story of dead people who are still under the rubble of their houses in b0918160515Gaza, and the story of barring the rescuers from gathering the wounded people and collecting the dead bodies is a war crime which gives me the right to shout loudly, in the face of the deaf international political community, the leaders of the Holocaust in Palestine who are still crying about the Jewish holocaust in Europe, paying them compensation and freeing them from paying taxes, establishing more laws in their favor and denying the people who pay taxes the right to open their mouth to talk against the crimes of Israel…

House and Senate Compete To See Who Can be Most Pro-Israel
Elana Schor
The Senate has just passed, by voice vote, a resolution defending and praising Israel for its war in Gaza, an operation that yesterday won condemnation from the Red Cross. The House is expected to follow suit with its own conspicuously pro-Israel resolution by week’s end, with only a few lawmakers — Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are two leaders on this issue — expected to resist the tide…

HISTORY WILL NOT FORGIVE OR FORGET
Ibrahim Ebeid, Al-Moharer.net
I believe that President George W. Bush has no conscience whatsoever and if he ever had one, it is dead. He is an arrogant man who has no feeling or respect for human lives and he doesn’t give a damn for the Arabs or Muslims. The massacres are continuing at a large scale in Gaza and probably will spread to the rest of Palestine with his approval and blessing. In his weekly radio talk to the nation on January 3, 2009, he blessed the Zionist war of annihilation on Gaza; he condoned the mass murder of the people of Palestine and put the blame on Hamas and the defenders of Gaza. The whole world knows that Israel was created by terrorism and mass murder but the arrogant Bush is accusing the victims of waging a campaign of violence against “Israel”…

WHO: “21 medics killed, 31 wounded due to the ongoing Israeli offensive
Saed Bannoura – IMEM
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Thursday that basic medical services in Gaza are collapsing as Israel continues its siege and offensive in the Gaza Strip. 21 medics were killed by Israeli shells and bullets and at least 31 others were wounded. According to information obtained by the WHO, the ongoing Israeli air strikes, shelling and ground offensive have limited the movement of the patients and the medics to a serious level that blocked medical services and the delivery of medical supplies. The organization stated that 21 medical personnel were killed in the Gaza Strip and that thirty other were wounded as the army did not only shell ambulances but also shelled hospitals in medical centers. The army also shelled at least eleven ambulances…

Gaza: Children Found Starving
Mel Frykberg
An international chorus of condemnation has blasted Israel over its human rights abuses in Gaza. Operation Cast Lead, into its 12th day, has now claimed the lives of over 700 Palestinians. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) demanded safe access Thursday for ICRC officials and Palestinian Red Crescent (PRC) ambulances to evacuate the wounded. It accused Israel of deliberately delaying ambulances. Rescue teams made several attempts to rescue the wounded and retrieve bodies in several areas of Gaza city but were refused entry by Israel Defence Forces (IDF) soldiers. On Wednesday, however, after a week’s intensive negotiations with Israeli officials, ICRC officials and PRC ambulance teams managed to reach some of the survivors in Gaza’s Zeitoun neighbourhood. The ICRC reported finding four starving toddlers next to the bodies of their dead mothers in one of the houses. The children were apparently too weak to stand. One man was found barely alive. Twelve bodies were found laid out on mattresses in the same house…

The Future. What Future ?
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
I received a touching mail from a young Palestinian woman, a student, in her early 20's. I am reprinting it with her permission. And to protect her anonymity, I shall deliberately call her Amal, meaning “Hope” in Arabic… <>I’m Palestinian. My father is from Lid, my mother is from Dayr Jarir. I can’t breathe how hard I’m crying. I can’t stay strong anymore, I don’t want to hate. I don’t want to. I don’t want to do these things. I want to have children. I want to bake for them. I want to teach them how to sing and paint and read. I want them to play. I want my husband to come home and find me happy and healthy and caring.I want life and love. I don’t want death and hatred. I don’t want barbed wire I don’t want bombs, I don’t want soldiers or martyrs or anymore blood on soil. I’m full of fear for the future. If this can happen with the whole world watching…what does that mean Ms. Anwar? What does it mean for any colored person anywhere? Globalization, power structures, capitalism…if there was a war and the underdogs won?…

UN: 257 Palestinian children killed in Gaza
IBRAHIM BARZAK and KARIN LAUB, Associated Press Write
Tiny bodies lying side by side wrapped in white burial shrouds. The cherubic face of a dead preschooler sticking up from the rubble of her home. A man cradling a wounded boy in a chaotic emergency room after Israel shelled a U.N. school. A photo of 4-year-old Kaukab Al Dayah, just her bloodied head sticking out from the rubble of her home, covered many front pages in the Arab world Wednesday. “This is Israel,” read the headline in the Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Youm. The preschooler was killed early Tuesday when an F-16 attacked her family’s four-story home in Gaza City. Four adults also died. As many as 257 children have been killed and 1,080 wounded — about a third of the total casualties since Dec. 27, according to U.N. figures released Thursday…

“We see women and children carrying white flags looking for food” – Israeli soldier
IRIN News
…Typical of the testimonies collected by Betselem is that of Abdallah Tawfiq Hamdan Kashku, a 44-year-old policeman with four children and a resident of Gaza City. “My family lives in a three-storey house in al-Zeitun, Gaza City. On Sunday [28 December], around 7pm, I was sitting with nine members of my family around a bonfire in the yard. It was cold, and we didn’t have electricity to heat the house. I turned on the generator to turn on the light. Then we heard the sound of planes in the sky. I heard a buzz and within a few seconds, I found myself under the rubble. I didn’t know what happened to me or to my family. I began to cry for help. The smoke was thick. I couldn’t see any of my family, who had been sitting with me a few moments earlier.”It took a few moments before I realised the house had collapsed because of the bomb. Neighbours rushed to pull us from the rubble. People took my family to the hospital, some by car and some by ambulance. I was taken to al-Shifa Hospital where the doctors treated me. I was slightly wounded in the leg. I asked my relatives and the doctors where the rest of my family was. They told me my wife had a broken pelvis and that the others had suffered light wounds but that they hadn’t found my little daughter, Ibtihal. I felt horrible, worrying so much about her. “Early the next morning, my brothers went home to look for Ibtihal. They looked under the ruins and found her body in the kitchen on the second floor…

US Senate supports Israel’s Gaza incursion
Reuters
The U.S. Senate voiced strong support on Thursday for Israel’s battle against Hamas militants in Gaza, while urging a ceasefire that would prevent Hamas from launching any more rockets into Israel. The chamber agreed on a voice vote to the non-binding resolution co-sponsored by Democratic and Republican party leaders in the chamber. “When we pass this resolution, the United States Senate will strengthen our historic bond with the state of Israel, by reaffirming Israel’s inalienable right to defend against attacks from Gaza, as well as our support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said before the vote…

The Dershowitz Check-Up Continues
How the Nutty Professor Misstates, Misrepresents and Misapplies the Law
FRANKLIN LAMB
…Professor Dershowitz’s conclusion makes plain his 40-year thesis that Israel is above, and immune from, international law as well as his profound personal lack of respect for post-World War II international legal norms. As an ultra-Zionist, what he insists is akin to “the law is what I tell you it is! And why can’t the World understand that!” While cherry picking, mischaracterizing and misapplying International Law, Professor Dershowitz ignores what every Law School and University teaches on the subject. Should he spend more time in the Harvard Law School library, and less in TV studios, he would surely learn that an objective application of international legal norms to the conduct of Israel is Gaza would result its leaders being indicted and brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague…

10 Are Killed in 3 Bomb Attacks on Iraqi Soldiers
TIMOTHY WILLIAMS, NYTimes
Eight Iraqi soldiers and two civilians were killed Thursday in three separate attacks in which insurgents used roadside bombs to target the Iraqi Army. In Diyala Province, which has been one of Iraq’s most violent areas in recent years, two roadside bombs exploded simultaneously as an Iraqi Army convoy was on its way to help a local police station that had come under mortar fire, said a security official speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press…

Taliban becoming more sophisticated with IEDs
JANE ARMSTRONG, Globe and Mail
Taliban-planted roadside bombs, which have killed 10 Canadian soldiers in the past five weeks, have grown far more sophisticated this winter, Canadian military officials say. Trooper Brian Good, killed Wednesday morning north of Kandahar city, became Canada’s first war casualty of 2009 from an improvised explosive device. Scores more Afghan police, army and civilians have been killed and maimed by the bombs, which insurgents plant on busy routes, as well as in ditches and culverts lining the roads. Winter is traditionally a period when fighting dies down in the Afghan countryside as fighters leave the country for Pakistan. Not so this year…
