The new Auschwitz; Gaza
Tanzil Chowdhury, Action for Palestine
…I know that people will look at this article with sentiments and try to look for hypocrisies or take the cowards route and lazily slap the heinous label of anti-Semite. Certain words have been used to accentuate the temerity of the attacks and highlight the hopelessness of the victims. Because of such actions, Israel has effectively thrown away the chances of peace further into the distance. Let me put this proposition forward. If I criticise Israels illegal occupation (and all the baggage with which is comes such as dehumanisation, human rights abuses, racism, illegal settlement activity) and their widely condemned and savage killing in Gaza, and I am called anti-Semitic, what my accuser asserts is all those horrible things I have mentioned are an inherent part of Jewish Law . Now who is the one being Anti-Semitic? For Gaza, a population formed mainly of the Palestinians who were displaced during the 1948 war, they continue to live in squalor and constant fear. The weather in Gaza is often unbearably hot. On the rare occasion it does rains, it brings some small yet meaningful relief to the 1.5 million crammed inside the tiny strip of land. But now, even when it rains, not water but missiles scatter the land. Avram Berg, a former Israel policy maker said that there were two types of people that came out of Auschwitz. People who say NEVER AGAIN FOR THE JEWISH PEOPLE. And the others say NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE!…

In Memoriam of President Saddam Hussein: “We Want an Independent, Liberated, Socialist Iraq”
President Saddam Hussein, Via Axis of Logic
…In imperialist calculations, one of the most important effective means of infiltration is the forms of psychological dealing in a counter direction—that is demoralisation of spirit and conscience and acting against inter-allied trends and trends connected with joint psychological feeling of solidarity among the ranks of the revolutionary and patriotic forces and work to destroy them. Splitting the patriotic forces is not unfamiliar to imperialism in its previous counter action. But the new thing is counter formulas by which it employs most up-to-date innovations of science and technology worked out by imperialism in its own workshops in addition to its own innovated potentials. You are required to make qualitative efforts and not quantitative ones. You should have qualitative amount of psychological, ideological and political immunity to face counter infiltration operations according to the formula we have noted. Imperialism aims at infiltrating through social and economic mainstays in society too…

Gaza: Are we all not guilty?
Aijaz Zaka Syed
…So while Israel relentlessly pummels and pulverizes Gaza and the world watches in silent indifference, all the Arabs and Muslim countries can do is condemn the Jewish state for its “flagrant violations of the principles of international humanitarian law.” As if Israel cares for what Arabs and Muslim think about it! But then what’s new? This is how it has always been in this utterly one-sided conflict. Israel kills, burns and brutalizes Palestinians at will and the world watches in morbid fascination as if it was a Hollywood production; as if it wasn’t real people of flesh and blood dying in front of our eyes but actors on silver screen play-acting to entertain us. Where’s the civilized world for God’s sake when we need it? Where is the international community with all its hallowed institutions and august organizations? Where are all those human rights agencies and NGOs that never tire of talking of all kinds of rights and charters and conventions? And where are the Arabs and Muslims?…

From the battlefield under siege: A statement by the PFLP
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
…The Israeli enemy has bombed our universities, ministries, municipal buildings, civil institutions and even our security buildings. Now, the tunnels that have provided our only means of trade and sustenance with the outside world, sealing off the last escape route from the open-air prison that the occupier has made of Gaza. What must be clear is that these crimes are being committed by the Israeli occupier with the complicity of the Egyptian regime and the active participation of the United States, and that, in fact, these crimes would not be possible without that complicity and support. This assault on our people in Gaza is a continuation of the war that Israel waged against the Lebanese people and their resistance in 2006 and the ongoing war against the Iraqi resistance, and involves the participation and complicity of the same forces in their attempts to destroy the Arab people’s resistance to colonialism, occupation, Zionism and imperialism…

Fears grow of Gaza ground assault
AlJazeera.net
Speculation is mounting that Israel is preparing to step up its assault on Gaza with a ground invasion, after it announced it would briefly open Erez border crossing to allow around 440 foreign residents to leave the territory. Early Friday saw continuing raids on targets in Gaza, a day after the Israeli army began clearing landmines along the border in apparent preparation for a possible ground offensive. Tanks, armoured vehicles and troops have been massing along the border for several days. With the Israeli offensive on Gaza entering its seventh day, the death toll now stands at at least 420 dead with more than 2,100 injured…

Catholic Prayers of New Year in Gaza
Kawther Salam
The Priest of the Roman Catholic Church in Gaza, Monsignor Emmanuel Musallam sent God his wish during the prayer of the new year 2009. He said he wished to see the Israeli criminals Ehud Barak, Ehud Olmert, and Tzipi Livni trialed as a war criminals. In Gaza the Christian population is about 3355 Palestinians. The Palestinians newspapers published that Monsignor Emmanuel Musallam was obliged to cancel the traditional night prayers for the new year in Gaza. He asked: How will the voices of our prayers arise to glorify God? And how will the songs of joy of the New Year 2009 be sung while the sounds of the Israeli bombs shock the earth and the sky of Gaza? How will the songs of the new year arise while and the Israeli airplanes arise above everything?…

The Donkey Who Scared the Israeli Army
Kawther Salam
The weakest and most coward army in the world, which considers itself as the strongest one targeted and bombed a donkey on the streets of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip. The cowards of the Israeli Air forces fired a missile at the donkey which was pulling a cart while Lama and Haya Hamdan, two sister aged 4 and 11, were searching for some food for their impoverished family. The poor “terrorist” donkey scared the Israeli soldier who was watching him lama-and-haia-donkeyfrom outside Gaza, using war equipment received from the “friendly” USA. The great scare of the “innocent” Israeli army obliged them to protect, to defend themselves and their criminal state from the big horror of a “terrorist” donkey, probably from “Hamas”…

Is the UN complicit in Israel’s massacre in Gaza?
Omar Barghouti
A friend forwarded to me the most original greeting for the New Year: “I wish in 2009 a horrible year for all war criminals and their accomplices.” I could not but think of whether some United Nations officials can be counted among such “accomplices.” Over the last two days, various UN officials stated that the percentage of civilians among those Palestinians killed in the current Israeli war of aggression on Gaza is about “25 percent” and is “likely to increase.” Assuming the best of intentions, stating such a painfully low figure reflects shabby research or scandalous incompetence. At worst, it reveals intentional deception and misinformation that can only benefit the already massive and well-oiled Israeli public relations machine…

Besieged Palestinians battle to find burial spaces
Hazem Balousha in Gaza and Toni O’Loughlin in Jerusalem
Salim Abu Sadaq and six of his relatives scrabbled around in the soil of Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan cemetery for two hours yesterday, searching for a space in which to lay his cousin to rest. In the end, he opened his grandfather’s grave and moved the older man’s remains aside to make space for the body of his grandson. After “The Beginning”, the first chapter in the Qur’an, was read aloud to mark the end of a life, Abu Sadaq expressed misgivings about the shared grave. “I feel very bad about it. It hasn’t happened before, but there’s no space.”…

Gazans face ‘humanitarian crisis’ as Israeli raids intensify
Aid agencies warn of looming disaster with supply shortage inflicting more suffering on families
Kim Sengupta, Indipendent
After six days of Israeli bombardment, aid agencies say that Gazans are facing a humanitarian crisis with air strikes causing severe problems in getting food, medicine and fuel supplies to the besiegedcivilian population. The assessment, by several international relief organisations, contradicts the statement by the Israeli Foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni, during a visit to Paris yesterday that “there is no humanitarian crisis in the Strip, and therefore there is no need for a humanitarian truce”. While relief shipments were allowed into Gaza by the Israeli authorities in the days before the start of the offensive, they came after weeks of virtually no supplies getting through, the agencies point out. The biggest difficulty is that many people are too frightened by bombing to venture out to collect food rations…

Torture & the Crime of Aggressive War
Peter Dyer
The U.S. government’s torture of detainees in the “war on terror” can be traced directly to a Feb. 7, 2002, memo signed by President George W. Bush. This was conclusion #1 of the recently released final report of the Senate Armed Services Committee Inquiry into the Treatment of Detainees in U.S. Custody… Torture, however, is only one of the crimes associated with the “war on terror.” A few prominent examples of other crimes waiting to be “sourced” are: Extraordinary rendition, illegal detention, loss of habeas corpus, abuse and murder of civilians in Iraq and elsewhere, and the creation of millions of impoverished refugees. With these crimes, the need to find the origin is every bit as imperative as with torture. But we don’t need to ask the Senate Armed Services Committee to initiate 18-month investigations for each of these as well. The question of responsibility for these and all other war crimes, including torture, was answered over 60 years ago at Nuremberg when high-ranking Nazis were brought to account for their atrocities in World War II. On Sept. 30, 1946, Sir Geoffrey Lawrence, president of the International Military Tribunal, read the judgment of the first Nuremberg trial, which included these memorable words:
“To initiate a war of aggression, therefore, is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.”…

Gaza diary: Psychological harm
Mohammed Ali
…My sister told us how her youngest daughter, Nada, who is three-and-a-half had that morning begun to draw. Interested by what her child was creating, my sister asked to look at it and motioned to take the picture for a moment “No!” cried Nada pointing at a drawing of an airplane, “stop, this could kill you!” This caused me to pause for thought at all the immeasurable psychological damage that this conflict has caused children; what have they done to deserve having their precious innocence destroyed? How will this affect them in the future?…

Gaza’s New Year doesn’t break from the last
Mohammad, KABOBfest
I was woken up today by a text message from my uncle Mohammad. Israeli F-16 warplanes had just destroyed the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Education, and the Palestinian Legislative Council, all potent symbols of Israel’s desire to destroy and demolish. I cannot think of any excuse for the destruction of ministries that regulate law and order and education. The bombing continued, as it has for six days now. The targets are almost exclusively civilian, as they have been for six days. A school in the Tufah neighborhood, a mosque in Abasan, homes, farms, the aforementioned ministries and the house of Palestinian democracy, the Legislative Council…

Taliban Kill 20 Afghan Bodyguards
VOA News
Afghan officials said Taliban militants have attacked and killed 20 bodyguards outside the home of a senior district chief in the southern province of Helmand. Authorities Thursday said Mullah Abdul Salaam, the chief of Musa Qala district and a former Taliban member, was not home at the time of the attack. The Taliban claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s ambush in Helmand’s Kajaki district, saying at least one of the guards was a Taliban sympathizer who helped assist the gunmen. A Taliban spokesman said two militant fighters died and four others were wounded in the attack…

US readying south Afghan surge against Taliban
JASON STRAZIUSO and RAHIM FAIEZ
Afghanistan’s southern rim, the Taliban’s spiritual birthplace and the country’s most violent region, has for the past two years been the domain of British, Canadian and Dutch soldiers. That’s about to change. In what amounts to an Afghan version of the surge in Iraq, the U.S. is preparing to pour at least 20,000 extra troops into the south, augmenting 12,500 NATO soldiers who have proved too few to cope with a Taliban insurgency that is fiercer than NATO leaders expected…

For the sake of Gaza’s 800,000 children
Miko Peled writing from San Diego, US, Live from Palestine
…There can be no doubt that among the 1.5 million people residing in Gaza there are more than 50 righteous men and women, but more importantly, there are 800,000 children in Gaza. According to reports in the Israeli newspapers hundreds of thousands of children were on their way to and from school at the time that 50 Israeli warplanes began a nine-hour attack during which they dropped more than one hundred tons of bombs. With Israeli elections scheduled for February, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who is hoping to once again become prime minister, has once again unleashed the Israeli military on the civilian population of Gaza…

US hands over green zone in Baghdad as Iraq takes control
Deborah Haynes, Times
Control of Baghdad’s fortified green zone, a symbol of the US-led occupation of Iraq, will pass to Iraqi hands today in one of many transfers of power taking place as the country regains its sovereignty almost six years after the invasion. The keys to Saddam Hussein’s Republican Palace, which served as the US Embassy, will also be given back to Iraq’s increasingly assertive Government. In addition, US commanders returned control of a swath of Iraqi airspace at midnight and British Forces are due to hand back Basra airport in the south…
