:: information from occupied iraq

From the 1920 Revolution Brigade.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
The 1920 RB is one of the factions of the valiant IRAQI Resistance. The following is the translation of the article I referred to in my previous post – namely an interview on Al-Jazeera with Dr. Abdallah Suleiman Al-Omaree, spokesman for the 1920 Revolution Brigades….Al-Omaree stated that his group was the first faction that started resisting the Occupation. He added that their faction had sternly warned, from the very first days of Baghdad’s occupation, against the division of the Iraqi people along ethnic and sectarian lines. Consequently, they (the Resistance) divided Iraqis into two groups: those who have been co-opted by the occupier and those who oppose him…Regarding the reasons behind the Mosul operation – he says that it was the outcome of certain settlements among the participants in the political process. Their way of dividing power over different parts of Iraq before the implementation of Federalism –a thing opposed by the majority of Iraqis…Regarding Muqtada Al-Sadr, Al-Omaree asserted that Resistance is not his way.
His movement may have a fall out with the occupier sometimes, but over some parochial interests that serve his own goals…

U.N. experts rap U.S. “cruelty” to child prisoners
Robert Evans, Reuters
United Nations experts on child rights criticised the United States on Friday over detention of juveniles at Guantanamo, in Afghanistan and Iraq, and voiced concern that some may have suffered cruel treatment. They also called for an end to recruitment of under-18s into the U.S. armed forces and for a halt to enlistment campaigns aimed specifically at young people from minority groups and poor or single-parent families. The strictures were issued in a report from the 18-member Committee on the Rights of the Child, which monitors performance under U.N. pacts, including two signed by Washington on children and armed conflict and on child prostitution. On under-18s — defined by the U.N. as children — held in U.S.-run prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Committee said it was “concerned over reports indicating the use of cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment.”…

The War, the Truth, and the New York Times
Anwaar Hussain
So finally the truth is acknowledged by the mother of all main stream media, the New York Times…Truth told late is worse than a murderous lie is all that one can say to the NYT. It is a dishonest admission coming rather late for a million plus human beings. The icing on this deceitful piece of reporting is the ending of the Op-Ed. It says, “We cannot say with certainty whether Mr. Bush lied about Iraq. But when the president withholds vital information from the public – or leads them to believe things that he knows are not true – to justify the invasion of another country, that is bad enough.” BAD ENOUGH! Did I read it right? That’s it? BAD ENOUGH! Would you believe it? A million murdered Iraqis, 4000 dead US soldiers, obliterated Iraqi cities, DU shot-up environment, countless crippled and maimed human beings, innumerable shattered lives and how does the NYT express its outrage; by calling it ‘bad enough’? “Sorry mommy, I just killed a million people.” “That’s bad. Don’t do that again, now eat your spinach” eh? Bad enough!?…

NATO, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Pakistan
What is NATO Doing in Afghanistan?
FAHEEM HUSSAIN
…The bombing of Serbia sanctioned NATO out of area operations and was a prelude to NATO involvement in Afghanistan as the handmaiden of the USA. NATO should never have been in Afghanistan in the first place and it is good to see that many European countries are reluctant to send their troops to die there. What is happening in Afghanistan is tragic with hundreds of innocents dying at the hands of indiscriminate bombing by US and NATO forces and by the retaliatory Taliban and resistance bombings but one thing is clear and that is that NATO will lose the war in Afghanistan….

Olmert raises spectre of full-scale Gaza operation
Ron Bousso, AFP
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Friday raised the spectre of a full-scale military operation in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip despite Egyptian attempts to mediate a truce. “According to the information as it is now, the pendulum is much closer to tough military action,” Olmert told journalists on arrival in Israel following a three-day trip to the United States. His comments came a day after a worker was killed in southern Israel in a mortar attack claimed by the armed wing of Hamas, the Islamist movement that has run Gaza since it ousted forces loyal to secular Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas a year ago…

Palestinian ambassador told to be more proactive
Palestinian Delegation in London is failing Gazans in their ‘darkest hour’, say campaigners
U-Pal Understanding Palestine
British peace campaigners have told the Palestinian General Delegate in London to be more proactive or go home. “Whatever you do on behalf of the Palestinians, it needs to be done on the right topics, through the right media channels, in a timely way and at much greater amplification, please. Otherwise we have to question how your continued presence in the UK can possibly serve the best interests of your fellow countrymen,” say U-Pal campaigners in a scathing message to Dr Manuel Hassassian. Dr Hassassian was appointed ambassador to the UK just prior to the 2006 Palestinian elections that saw the rise of Hamas to power. Since then Israel, with the connivance of the US, Britain and certain Palestinian factions, has tried to marginalise and destroy the people’s democratic choice…

Did Iranian agents dupe Pentagon officials?
Matthew Saroff
It appears that there is evidence that Iranian intelligence operatives infiltrated the various Iraqi and Iranian exile groups that called for war against Iraq in 2002-2003. The aborted counterintelligence investigation probed some Pentagon officials’ contacts with Iranian exile Manucher Ghorbanifar, whom the CIA had labeled a “fabricator” in 1984. Those contacts were brokered by an American civilian, Michael Ledeen, a former Pentagon and National Security Council consultant and a leading advocate of invading Iraq and overthrowing Iran’s Islamic regime. There is also Achmed Chalabi and the INC, though they are not mentioned in this article. The Pentagon started an investigation of it, but Rumsfeld shut it down when he heard of it. 4 Years ago, Matthew Yglesias suggested, tongue in cheek, that GW Bush was an Iranian mole…I now wonder how funny it really was….I’m just saying…

Popular Committee Against Siege(PCAS)

Israel cuts off Palestinian tax funds as relations hit new low
Donald Macintyre

Israel attack on Iran ‘unavoidable’-Olmert deputy
Dan Williams, Reuters
An Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites looks “unavoidable” given the apparent failure of sanctions to deny Tehran technology with bomb-making potential, one of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s deputies said on Friday. “If Iran continues with its programme for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack it. The sanctions are ineffective,” Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told the mass-circulation Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper. “Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable,” said the former army chief who has also been defence minister…

The Global Crisis: Food, Water and Fuel. Three Fundamental Necessities of Life in Jeopardy
Michel Chossudovsky, Globalresearch
We are at the crossroads of the most serious economic and social crisis in modern history. The process of global impoverishment unleashed at the outset of the 1980s debt crisis has reached a major turning point, leading to the simultaneous outbreak of famines in all major regions of the developing World. There are many complex features underlying the global economic crisis pertaining to financial markets, the decline in production, the collapse of State institutions and the rapid development of a profit-driven war economy. What is rarely mentioned in this analysis, is how this global economic restructuring forcibly impinges on three fundamental necessities of life: food, water and fuel….

Iraq said on Friday it would not grant U.S. troops freedom of movement for military operations in a new agreement being negotiated on extending the presence of American troops on its soil. Iraq almost most corrupt in the world
JOEL BRINKLEY
During the five years the United States has occupied Iraq, the Bush administration has created a new state with a number of notable features: A venal, dysfunctional government. A terrorist haven and training ground. A nation so violent and dangerous that 10 percent of the population has fled. Add to that a new hallmark: Nearly the most corrupt nation on Earth. Only two states out of 180, Somalia and Burma, outrank Iraq in Transparency International’s latest worldwide corruption index. They are tied for last place. But Iraq has plummeted through the rankings since 2004, when it was near the middle of the pack, and is now within a hair’s width of crashing to the bottom…

The unpromised land
Ian Williams,Guardian
Imagine the shock-horror: Barack Obama attends the conference of an organisation whose former officials face trial for spying on the United States! It would be all over the blogs, except that John McCain and Hillary Clinton were attending the AIPAC conference this week in Washington DC as well, pandering to the lobby that will get you accused of anti-Semitism if you quote its own website about its power. This non-lobby has always harassed politicians into compliance – who now remembers the way they hounded Hillary Clinton for years as a crypto-Palestinian supporter? It works. Whatever the lobby asks for, she now gives them 50% cent more. And Obama gave them 100% extra…

The ongoing Arab grief
Azmi Bishara

The Nakba is a rupture in Palestinian history. Palestinian society was uprooted, the Palestinian city destroyed, and with each the dream harboured by Arab elites and middle classes between the world wars of building an independent Arab nation and catching up with the modern world. The Palestinian peasant who had vied with the forces of nature on his land with his hoe was ejected from that struggle and that harmony. Whereas once his dreams were woven with the fragrance of basil and olives, the lazy crawl of time and the seasons revolving slowly but surely like a waterwheel, his dreams fell into the hands of politicians, balances of power and international resolutions; his rites becoming seasonal conferences calling for return, the transistor radio proclaiming the promise of liberation and the fragrance of place evaporating in a haze of nostalgia…

Gaza: Blockade on Education
By Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
Since last June, stories of ill patients unable to leave the Gaza Strip, Israeli military invasions and fuel cuts have been streaming out of the coastal strip at a steady pace. The blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza ever since Hamas took over in June 2006 has resulted in hundreds of deaths, skyrocketing unemployment and lack of proper food and water supplies. On May 29, the collective punishment imposed on Gaza’s 1.4 million residents took yet another turn. Seven outstanding students granted the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship for university study in the United States were informed by the US State Department that their scholarships would regrettably be cancelled…
