Bremer’s 100 orders: The true scale of Iraq’s rape and destruction
Whisperwolf
If you’re a US Citizen (and even if you’re not), ask yourself one important question with reference to Iraq: Have you ever heard of Bremer’s 100 orders? If the answer is “no” then you don’t understand the true destruction of Iraq. This is not altogether something to be ashamed of; the media, led by Murdoch’s “FOX News” has deliberately refrained from covering the laws in any detail, mostly because if they did reveal the extent of the destruction, good American citizens would be outraged. But Bremer’s 100 orders destroyed Iraq’s economy not just for years but for decades to come…

Colonial Suffocation – No Energy for Gaza
Moon of Alabama
…After the attack Israel first promised to keep the already much reduced fuel supply to Gaza going for “humanitarian reasons”. Israel said it would hold Hamas responsible for Wednesday’s attack because it is in charge of the Gaza Strip but would not cut off the fuel supply to residents there. “The policy is to continue to bring humanitarian supplies to Gaza,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Aryeh Mekel said. … All cooking gas and oil, heavy diesel fuel and gasoline provided to the Gaza Strip go through the Nahal Oz crossing by a series of undergrounds pipes. But obviously Israeli official words are just that. Now it has cut off all supplies. Israel cut off the only source of fuel to Gaza’s 1.4 million people Thursday after a deadly Palestinian raid on the Israeli depot, deepening the seaside territory’s hardship. Israel, in its colonial expansion, daily kills Palestinians who resist the occupation and annexation of their land. More so, it is collectively punishing all Palestinian people, be they old or young, for the doings of those who resist to the stealing of their land. There are people in Gazan hospitals who will die tonight because their hospitals lack gaz for their generators. There are kids dying from not cooked waste water they’ll have to drink…

The Children of Gaza
Saleh al Naeimi
…Dr. Fouad Al Khuffash, the Director of the Ahrar Center for Prisoners Studies said, “The Israeli intelligence agency places every detained Palestinian child in a cell alone for a week where an investigation is carried out regarding his involvement in stone throwing,” he added. He said that investigators threatened children with rape and would hurl abusive language at them. In a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat, he added, “Reprimanding a child everyday, threatening to arrest his brother or using other immoral threats destroys one’s soul and is a motive to commit suicide.” He pointed out that the Israeli intelligence agencies are continuing to create new methods to force detained children to become spies in order to destroy the Palestinian social fabric. Al Khuffash added that the [Israeli] Shabak security service depends on detained children in order to plant the biggest number of spies amongst Palestinian people. All detained children are invited to join Shabak and they are beaten and threatened with rape to convince them to go down the road of treason…

Genocide announced
Bombs would fall under other circumstances, but when influential rabbis call for the total annihilation of the Palestinians the world watches without blinking
Saleh Al-Naami, Al-Ahram Weekly
“All of the Palestinians must be killed; men, women, infants, and even their beasts.” This was the religious opinion issued one week ago by Rabbi Yisrael Rosen, director of the Tsomet Institute, a long-established religious institute attended by students and soldiers in the Israeli settlements of the West Bank. In an article published by numerous religious Israeli newspapers two weeks ago and run by the liberal Haaretz on 26 March, Rosen asserted that there is evidence in the Torah to justify this stand. Rosen, an authority able to issue religious opinions for Jews, wrote that Palestinians are like the nation of Amalekites that attacked the Israelite tribes on their way to Jerusalem after they had fled from Egypt under the leadership of Moses. He wrote that the Lord sent down in the Torah a ruling that allowed the Jews to kill the Amalekites, and that this ruling is known in Jewish jurisprudence….

Bush orders Iraq escalation to continue
Patrick Martin, WSWS
In a brief televised speech delivered just before noon Thursday, President Bush announced that there would be no further reduction of US troop strength once the current drawdown of forces is completed in July. This means that some 140,000 US soldiers will remain in occupation of the country through the November election, and likely until Bush leaves the White House on January 20, 2009. The speech followed two days of testimony on Capitol Hill by General David Petraeus, the US commander in Iraq, and Ambassador Ryan Crocker. While their appearance before a series of House and Senate committees provided the semblance of consultation with the legislature, the decision to maintain US troop strength was taken weeks ago and made public well in advance in both Baghdad and Washington…

Catch 2,200
9 Propositions on the U.S. Air War for Terror
Tom Engelhardt
Let’s start with a few simple propositions. First, the farther away you are from the ground, the clearer things are likely to look, the more god-like you are likely to feel, the less human those you attack are likely to be to you. How much more so, of course, if you, the “pilot,” are actually sitting at a consol at an air base near Las Vegas, identifying a “suspect” thousands of miles away via video monitor, “following” that suspect into a house, and then letting loose a Hellfire missile from a Predator drone cruising somewhere over Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, or the tribal areas of Pakistan. Second, however “precise” your weaponry, however “surgical” your strike, however impressive the grainy snuff-film images you can put on television, war from the air is, and will remain, a most imprecise and destructive form of battle…

Trapped between Egypt and Iraq
The plight of Iraqi refugees in Egypt is compounded by a lack of access to education or to work
Al-Ahram Weekly
…Given the large numbers of people involved, and the comparatively few that have applied for refugee status, all this means that between 60,000 and 140,000 Iraqi refugees in Egypt are living without legal recognition, which constitutes the most basic form of protection. Even for those who have registered with the UNHCR, the weight of life in exile when combined with the lack of opportunities to work renders life extremely difficult. Compounding such difficulties is the fact that the Egyptian authorities have forbidden Iraqi refugees from setting up their own associations. “Those who receive assistance from UNHCR do so via a Sudanese NGO, because we Iraqis are forbidden to set up NGOs of our own,” Ahmed says. Like all Iraqi refugees — registered or not — Ahmed is not allowed to work. He has also been unable to complete his degree in Egypt, because Cairo’s public universities have informed him that he will have to pay fees at the rate set for foreign students. “The US-led occupation of Iraq and the militias that started to operate after the invasion have done far more than kill Iraqis,” Ahmed says…

Video: Deir Yassin Remembered
www.deiryassin.org
Early in the morning of April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun (headed by Menachem Begin) and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin, a village … all “ with about 750 Palestinian residents. The village lay outside of the area to be assigned by the United Nations to the Jewish State; it had a peaceful reputation. But it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Deir Yassin was slated for occupation under Plan Dalet and the mainstream Jewish defense force, the Haganah, authorized the irregular terrorist forces of the Irgun and the Stern Gang to perform the takeover. In all over 100 men, women, and children were systematically murdered…

Like numerous previous meetings, however, the latest encounter yielded no substantive results towards a breakthrough in Palestinian- Israeli peacemaking. Capital Crimes: Another Smoking Gun on Terror War Torture
Chris Floyd , Empire Burlesque
…This is not just a smoking gun — it’s a MOAB dropped right on the White House, confirming, yet again, what any sentient being should already know: the illegal torture tactics (yes, they are torture; and yes, they are illegal, no matter what “the Attorney General says”) used on George W. Bush’s Terror War captives were approved by the highest officials of the government, all of whom knew — in exacting, sickening detail — just what they were inflicting. These cold-blooded atrocities were not restricted to “high value al Qaeda suspects” – the demure fiction that the ABC report, like most others in the mainstream media that have begun, gingerly, to delve into these crimes, still retains. As mountains of evidence has already shown, these “enhanced interrogation techniques” were used throughout the Terror War prison system, from top to bottom, on prisoners rounded up at random in mass raids in Iraq and Afghanistan, on innocent people sold into captivity by bounty hunters, on innocent people snatched off the streets in Asia, Africa, Europe…

Haunting: The Pillaging and Destruction of Iraq’s National Museum of Antiquities
Les Blough, Axis of Logic Editor
In the din of the infamous war on the people of Iraq, the killing and maiming is haunting; the dead and disabled children … the empty chairs at the dinner table … the empty or destroyed houses where whole families once lived … the suffering of those left behind … all of it haunts us; the destruction of a modern infrastructure, power plants, bridges, highways, sewage systems, water supply, public schools, universities, hospitals, clinics, dental labs, irrigation systems, farms, orchards, research facilities are haunting – under Saddam, Iraq had it all; … the destruction of this ancient culture is haunting. I am sometimes ashamed to say it, but I must. In a strange way, the destruction of the National Museum of Antiquities in Baghdad haunts me more … or at least differently … than any of these. How can I place “things” above the suffering of my brothers and sisters in Iraq, one might fairly ask. I do not. But when in 2003, I watched the National Museum pillaged and robbed, it went to my sense of “the cradle” … of the oldest symbols of our existance as homo sapien. humanity. It symbolized for me our self-annihilation as a species and whether we will … can … whether we can turn it around … and go on. In some strange way, the destruction and pillaging of the National Museum of Antiquities was and continues to be, the most haunting of all in this dark, bloody hell called “The War in Iraq”…

Iraqi detainees languish uncharged in crowded jails
Steve Lannen | McClatchy Newspapers
Barefoot in his yellow jumpsuit, the young detainee’s eyes welled up as he described in a shaking voice how he landed in an Iraqi army detention facility on the outskirts of Baghdad. He was visiting his mother in the hospital when Iraqi soldiers raided the hospital and detained him and several others, said Thamer Hamed, 22. They handcuffed and blindfolded him and took him to a holding cell at a former U.S. military base, ironically named Camp Constitution, that’s been handed over to the Iraqi army. There, he was told that he was accused of murder. That was 45 days ago, and he still hadn’t seen a judge, he said. Asked to which religious sect he belongs, he smiled ruefully….

BBC: Imperial Tool
Stephen Lendman
At a time of growing public disenchantment with the major media, millions now rely on alternate sources. Many online and print ones are credible. One of the world’s most relied on is not – the BBC. It’s an imperial tool, as corrupted as its dominant counterparts, been around longer than all of them, now in it for profit, and it’s vital that people know who BBC represents and what it delivers. It was close but not quite the world’s first broadcaster. Other European nations claim the distinction along with KDKA Pittsburgh as the oldest US one. BBC’s web site states: “The British Broadcasting Company Ltd (its original name) was formed in October 1922….and began broadcasting on November 14….By 1925 the BBC could be heard throughout most of the UK. (Its) biggest influence….was its general manager, John Reith (who) envisioned an independent British broadcaster able to educate, inform and entertain the whole nation, free from political interference and commercial pressure.” That’s what BBC says….

Petraeus Urges Care in Dealing With Militia
BRIAN KNOWLTON, NYTimes
The top U.S. commander in Iraq on Thursday urged a “very, very sensitive approach” in dealing with the Shiite militias loyal to the radical cleric Moktada al-Sadr, as the Baghdad government unwinds a military operation against Sadr followers and other armed groups in southern Iraq…”We certainly share the frustration,” he said in a 90-minute news conference held along with Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker,. “It’s less reassuring to folks than some want to hear, but it is the reality on the ground.” After their extensive congressional testimony, the two men offered no revelations on Thursday, but they did elaborate on the delicate U.S. relationship with the Sadrist militia, with which Iraqi government troops recently battled in the southern port city of Basra. When a reporter asked whether the Sadrists were considered an enemy of the United States, both officials answered cautiously, almost deferentially. General Petraeus referred to the Sadrist militia as “a movement that has to be not just acknowledged but addressed, acknowledged, reached out to by the government of Iraq.” Mr. Crocker was more direct, saying, “No, I would not consider it our enemy.”…

Can Criticism of Israel Be Stopped?

How can criticism of Israel be stopped? By labeling it as anti-Semitism, or so supporters of Israel right or wrong believe. This has always been Zionism’s game but now the U.S. State Department, no doubt under immense pressure from the Zionist lobby and its Christian fundamentalist allies, is playing it, too. In my view the State Department’s 94-page study, Contemporary Global Anti-Semitism, is a disengenuous and dangerous document which might well make all Jews everywhere more not less vulnerable….
