Petraeus Personally Introduces Disgraced Ahmed Chalabi To U.S. Troops In Iraq
Think Progress
On Sunday, McClatchy reported that disgraced Iraqi politician Ahmed Chalabi had “re-emerged as a central figure” in the U.S. strategy for Iraq. His latest job: to press Iraq’s government to “deliver better electricity, health, education and local security services to Baghdad,” as “the next phase” of the escalation. Today, Blackanthem.com reports that Petraeus has been trumpeting his new alliance with Chalabi, introducing him to U.S. troops serving in Iraq: Gen. David Petraeus, commanding general, Multi-National Force-Iraq, Dr. Ahmad Chalabi, director of services in Iraq, and Dr. Safi Al-Sheik, director of the Iraqi National Reconciliation Committee, met with Soldiers and leaders of the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga., who are operating in the Arab Jabour area…

Ill-Equipped Soldiers Opt for ‘Search and Avoid’
Dahr Jamail
Iraq war veterans now stationed at a base here say that morale among US soldiers in the country is so poor, many are simply parking their Humvees and pretending to be on patrol, a practice dubbed “search and avoid” missions. Phil Aliff is an active duty soldier with the 10th Mountain Division stationed at Fort Drum in upstate New York. He served nearly one year in Iraq from August 2005 to July 2006, in the areas of Abu Ghraib and Fallujah, both west of Baghdad. “Morale was incredibly low,” said Aliff, adding that he joined the military because he was raised in a poor family by a single mother and had few other prospects. “Most men in my platoon in Iraq were just in from combat tours in Afghanistan.”…

Gaza Update
Mona ElFarra, From Gaza, with Love
…It is realy sad to tell you that poverty level has increased in Gaza to unprecented levels , with the embargo and economical siege , food staples prices have increased , this is the talk of people at the moment ,beside that Israel announced its implementation of the more strict siege and cut off basic supplies and fuel ; medications and medical supplies are big problem, many essential medications are lacking in the pharmacies , detergents too , patients who need to be referred for treatment abroad are denied permit to leave the country. According to international law we are occupied by Israel , and this puts responsibility on Israel to Guarantee the supplies for the civilians of Gaza , but what Israel is doing is COLLECTIVE PUNISHMENT which again is big crime according to international law . THE WORLD IS SILENT I KNOW WE ALL FEEL THAT IN GAZA, we try to survive to help each other to continue living and not to collapse….

Facing defeat in Afghanistan
Simon Tisdall, Guardian
Nato troops plunged into a vicious new round of fighting with the Taliban yesterday as hundreds of Afghan civilians fled their homes in villages around Kandahar. The violence, in which about 50 militants reportedly died, again underscored how insecure and ungovernable large tracts of the south and east remain six years after “victory in Kabul”. The impact of the continuing bloodshed, said to be the worst since 2001, is being felt far beyond the battlefields of Kandahar, Helmand and Uruzgan. Simmering tensions between Nato members over “burden-sharing” are bubbling to the surface in Berlin, Washington and London. All agree the alliance’s mission is under-resourced and under-funded; none has a ready answer to the problem. Despite a steady escalation of force levels from about 5,000 in 2003 to more than 40,000 today, the fight grows ever more desperate. The possibility of military failure, previously unthinkable, is now openly discussed…

…Using this latter figure for Iraq and a UN-derived estimate for Afghanistan, the post-invasion excess deaths in Occupied Iraq and Occupied Afghanistan total 0.9 million and 2.1 million, respectively – a total of 3.0 million deaths, 1,000 (one thousand) times the number of people murdered on 9/11. These estimates are consonant with independent UN data on post-invasion under-5 infant deaths, currently 0.4 million and 1.7 million, respectively, for Occupied Iraq and Occupied Afghanistan…

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Wednesday, 31 October 2007.
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice. www.freearabvoice.org
… In a dispatch posted at 6:09pm Baghdad time Wednesday evening, the Yaqen News Agency reported that pro-American Kurdish separatist Peshmergah gunmen raided the two villages of Sayyid Khalaf and Sayyid Hamid in the Kirkuk area, 255km north of Baghdad on Wednesday. Yaqen reported that the Kurdish separatist militiamen abducted about 27 Arab Iraqis and took them away to a Kurdish separatist prison. The US-installed puppet regime in Baghdad and its local offices completely ignored the action. Yaqen wrote that the incident was the latest example of the daily attacks mounted by American-backed Kurdish separatists on the Arab population in a campaign aimed at driving Arabs out of the area. The “ethnic cleansing” campaign is a part of a massive effort to fulfill plans laid out by Zionist and American think tanks to partition Iraq….

Wednesday: 94 Iraqis Killed, 20 Wounded
Margaret Griffis, Antiwar.com
At least 94 Iraqis were killed and 20 others were wounded during a mostly quiet Wednesday. Many of the dead were killed during security raids. No Coalition troops were reported killed. In Basra, the British confirmed that the handover of security operations to the Iraqis will be completed by December. Troops have removed themselves from most of Basra already, even though they admit that the level of violence is unacceptable….

US State Department offered immunity to Blackwater mercenaries
Kate Randall, WSWS
More than a month and a half after the September 16 massacre carried out in Baghdad by guards from the Blackwater USA security firm, it has come to light that the US State Department offered “limited” immunity to the mercenaries involved in shooting to death at least 17 Iraqi civilians. The offer of immunity was granted to the Blackwater guards by State Department officials in Baghdad in the immediate aftermath of the shootings in exchange for giving sworn statements about the incident. This immunity was granted without the knowledge of the US Justice Department, and news of the deal apparently caught State Department officials in Washington off guard….

McCain: Iraq Pullout Bad For Israel
Adam Dickter, New York Jewish Week,
In a message to the majority of American Jews who oppose continued U.S. presence in Iraq, Arizona Sen. John McCain on Tuesday told the community’s largest umbrella group that a “surrender” now would harm Israel’s security. “If you believe that the State of Israel is going to be more secure if the U.S. fails in Iraq, we have an honest difference of opinion,” McCain told leaders of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations….

Spot the missing item
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Headline: “Iraq civilian, U.S. military tolls at new low in Oct.” Notice anything missing? I hope so. It’s the group of whom I have never seen a cumulative count – Iraqi police and army. However, this particular article does have the last two months’ data: Figures from Iraq’s health, interior and defense ministries recorded 758 civilians killed in violence in October, along with 117 policemen and 13 Iraqi soldiers. In September, 884 civilian deaths were recorded, and 62 policemen and 16 Iraqi soldiers were killed. So an alternative headline might have included this phrase: “Iraqi police tolls double in October.”…

The ‘Innocent Civilians’ Not on Israel’s Agenda
Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
It is ironic how everyone across the spectrum – politicians, civil society and the average man on the street – all stress on the protection of innocent civilians during times of conflict, and yet it is these very civilians who pay the heaviest price. This is not exclusive to Palestine. Look at Iraq or Afghanistan. The United States, the great defender of democracy and civil rights, prides itself on waging war right. The “innocent civilians” caught in the midst of its sublime endeavor to grant freedom and independence to the Iraqi people are brushed off as unfortunate collateral damage. They were never the target of America’s wrath, the US claims, but they are certainly the ones who have suffered from it the most. Here in Palestine, the Gaza Strip is the new Iraq…

GAO: Reduction In Violence Due To ‘Ethnically Cleansed Neighborhoods’ In Iraq
Think Progress
Looking for signs of progress in Iraq, the Bush administration has been quick to jump on reports of reduced violence in Iraq. The “violence is thankfully coming down,” said White House spokesperson Dana Perino. Violence is “down significantly from last year,” declared President Bush. In a hearing before the House Appropriations Committee today, Joe Christoff of the Government Accountability Office stated that this recent reduction in violence should be taken with a grain of salt, as it coincides with increased sectarian cleansing and a massive refugee displacement: I think that’s [ethnic cleansing] an important consideration in even assessing the overall security situation in Iraq. You know, we look at the attack data going down, but it’s not taking into consideration that there might be fewer attacks because you have ethnically cleansed neighborhoods, particularly in the Baghdad area. […] It’s produced 2.2. million refugees that have left, it’s produced two million internally displaced persons within the countryas well…

Basra in the grip of militias
Ahmed Janabi, Aljazeera.net
Amid warnings that southern Iraq could erupt into civil war when British troops withdraw, Basra’s chief of police has publicly admitted that his forces have been unable to clamp down on growing militia warfare in the city. In recent months, rival Shia factions have been battling for control of the city which is considered the second largest in the country and home to Iraq’s only port. This makes the Basra a vital outlet to the Gulf for marine transportation of oil and fuel products – a lucrative prize for any political faction looking to consolidate its power in Baghdad. The ensuing power struggle has led to an exodus of Sunni, Shia and Christian families northwards and often out of the country…

The Taliban told Al Jazeera that it had been fighting international forces, and that a major battle was under way on Wednesday. There had been 24 hours of heavy fighting. A provincial police chief said that Afghan and Nato forces had killed 50 fighters in three days of clashes. Residents in the area say the casualties are higher. Qari Mohammad Yousuf, a Taliban spokesman, said fighters had captured seven checkpoints around Arghandab. Federalism is our path
Marc Lynch, Abu Aardvark
No, this didn’t come out of Joe Biden’s office. It’s a map of a federal Iraq allegedly produced by Ammar al-Hakim’s Shahid Mihrab Organization (a SCIRI/SIIC proselytizing organization in southern Iraq) and being distributed by Shia members of the Iraqi parliament (with dark murmurings among the Sunni commentators that it must have been made in Iran because of how Najaf is written). “Federalism is our one path to freedom and security,” it declares…it seems to have become one of those viral images and to have touched some exposed nerves. Can’t help noticing that there are only two hands clasped together there, not three, and that the Sunni areas are kind of…. dark. And small…

Is England is a better place without Blair?
Sarah Meyer, Index Research
England is a nicer place to be right now. We don’t have the relentless siege of Blair’s lies anymore. What a relief. Blair’s hubris still shines from afar as he bleats about terrorism and gives instructions about US-NATO, while earning himself £millions from speeches no one should pay to hear. Blair’s shadow still hangs over us: Trident; longer pretrial detention; ID cards; 6 million surveillance cameras; shameful ‘rendition’; access to phone records by government agencies; nuclear power; and the pointless ‘robocop’ British soldiers in Basra, whose feelings are echoed by american soldiers, some of whom avoid patrol …

We the Palestinian Canadian community assembly at the Palestinian National Voice Preparatory Conference in Hamilton, Canada, issue this letter out of profound concern regarding the present state of the Palestinian national struggle and the November 2007 “peace” conference to be hosted by the United States in Annapolis, Maryland. While Palestinians still suffer from the disaster of the Oslo Accords, the Palestinian National Authority has now agreed to attend another round of flawed negotiations. This time it does so under the pressure of North America n and European nations that have actively collaborated with Israel to divide the Palestinian people and inflict collective punishment and other war crimes against them. Even now Israel is being allowed to deny the Palestinians the basic necessities for a functioning society through a humiliating siege against the Palestinian people in response to the exercise of Palestinian democracy and the adherence to its results….

US downplays talk of Iran attack

After weeks of escalating US rhetoric on Iran, the White House vowed Tuesday to “pursue every possible diplomatic means” to defuse the volatile dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program. Spokeswoman Dana Perino sought to quiet fears that US President George W. Bush plans to attack the Islamic republic over its refusal to freeze sensitive nuclear work that can lead to the development of atomic weapons. “There’s no reason for people to think that the president is about to attack Iran. I think that we need to make that clear,” she said. “He doesn’t want people to fear that, because what he is doing is pursuing a diplomatic track.”…

Strange or not so strange
Arablinks
Some think it strange so many Americans still think Saddam had something to do with 9/11. Not so strange, however, once you weigh up all the propaganda against “those people”. Personally I found it strange so few Americans criticized the announcement of Israeli punishment of the 1.5 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip as a weapon against Hamas. But I guess it’s not so strange when once you weigh up all of the propaganda against “those people”. And how strange, some think, that one of the oldest forms of organized torture, is in effect okayed by the nominee for Attorney General, provided it is done by nameless US officials carrying out orders, against nameless Arab detainees so designated by other nameless US officials. But I guess that too can be explained by the animus against “those people”. Racism is an inadequate expression for what is going on in America. But it is a good first approximation…

A Catastrophe on the Way
Treasure of Baghdad
In today’s papers and news websites, a new scandal and a predictable catastrophe are revealed to the world. The Iraqi corrupt government, which has done nothing positive since it came to power, wasted $27 Million which was supposed to be used for the reconstruction of the Mosul Dam. According to the BBC, a US watchdog said reconstruction of the dam had been plagued by mismanagement and potential fraud, and that among the faults were faulty construction and delivery of improper parts, as well as projects which were not completed despite full payments having been made. Due to the corruption and misuse of the funds, the dam is now in serious danger of an imminent collapse that could unleash a trillion-gallon wave of water, possibly killing as much as 500,000 people and flooding two of the largest cities in the country…This government and parliament need to be spat at for the failure of every thing.
