Big-Game Hunting in Iraq
Tom Engelhardt & Nick Turse
…Nor is there anything new about Americans treating racial and ethnic enemies as the equivalent of animals to be abused or killed. In his memoir of the Vietnam War, Dispatches, acclaimed combat correspondent Michael Herr, for example, recalled a young soldier from the Army’s 1st Infantry Division who admitted, “Well, you know what we do to animals…. kill ‘em and hurt ‘em and beat on ‘em…. Shit, we don’t treat the Dinks [Vietnamese] no different than that.” Another veteran, quoted elsewhere remembered, “As soon as I hit boot camp…. they tried to change your total personality…. Right away they told us not to call them Vietnamese. Call them gooks, dinks…. They were like animals, or something other than human…. They told us they’re not to be treated with any type of mercy…” Today, the slurs of the Vietnam era have been replaced by “haji” and “raghead,” while the big-game hunters and the language that goes with killing animals have added to the atmosphere of dehumanization…

….In a dispatch posted at 12:40am Baghdad time just after midnight Saturday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a US patrol opened fire on a family in their car on a street in al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad, on Friday afternoon, killing a little Iraqi girl. Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police, who asked not to be identified, as saying that the Americans opened fire on the private car when it darted out of a side street onto the main road where the US patrol was driving. The US gunfire wounded the little girls mother and severely wounded the little girl who was no more than five years old. The source said that the little girl arrived in al-Fallujah General Hospital in grave condition with gunshot wounds to her head and abdomen. She died a half hour after being admitted…

ANALYSIS: Israel’s real intention behind sanctions on Gaza Strip
Amos Harel and Avi Issacharoff , Haaretz Correspondents
There is an enormous gap between the reasons Israel is giving for the decision to impose significant sanctions against Hamas rule in the Gaza Strip, and the real intentions behind them. Defense Minister Ehud Barak authorized Thursday a plan for disrupting electricity supply to the Gaza Strip, as well as significantly shrinking fuel shipments. This is supposed to reduce the number of Qassam rocket attacks against Sderot and the other border communities. In practice, defense officials believe that the Palestinian militants will intensify their attacks in response to the sanctions. As such, the real aim of this effort is twofold: to attempt a new form of “escalation” as a response to aggression from Gaza, before Israel embarks on a major military operation there; and to prepare the ground for a more clear-cut isolation of the Gaza Strip – limiting to an absolute minimum Israel’s obligation toward the Palestinians there…

US denies being on warpath with Iran
Olivier Knox, AFP
The White House on Friday rejected any parallels between its Iran rhetoric and the run up to the Iraq invasion, adding it had not ruled out the use of force but was “very hopeful” of avoiding war. Fresh sanctions on Tehran and escalating US warnings have fueled comparisons to the weeks and months before the March 2003 invasion, but spokesman Tony Fratto told reporters: “I don’t think there are any parallels to draw at all.” Asked whether the United States was on course for armed conflict with Iran over its suspect nuclear program and alleged interference in Iraq, Fratto replied: “I think we’re very, very hopeful that it won’t.” “We are absolutely committed to a diplomatic process. We would never take options off the table, but the diplomatic process is what we want to move forward with,” he said, calling it “unwise” to rule out the use of force…

When ‘Good Men’ do Nothing
Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
…This is certainly not the first time a Palestinian prisoner has died in an Israeli jail. Since the start of the Aqsa Intifada in September 2000, there have been 17 prisoner deaths, according to the Prisoners’ Club. After each death, the Palestinians rise up on anger, condemning the injustice and calling on international organizations to step in and protect the prisoners. And while organizations such as the International Committee for the Red Cross facilitate in matters such as family visits and securing clothes to the men and women behind bars, they are rendered ineffective when Israel orders a shut down. After Monday’s riots at Ketziot, Israeli prison authorities canceled all family visits to the prison. So basically, the Palestinians, whether inside prison or not, are all at the mercy of Israel’s oppressive policies and Israel, regardless of its actions, is almost always exonerated in the eyes of the international community under the pretext of its “security” and “self-defense.” Since the Palestinians do not have all the means to persecute Israel for their actions, this responsibility should fall on those people (or countries) of conscience who do. In the words of English philosopher Edmund Burke, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”…

Army to review Iraq contracts for fraud

Saturday 27th October 2007 : A Day Conference on Iraq
The Plight of Iraqi People under Occupation
Solidarity for an Independent and Unified Iraq
Let’s start with the facts: * Over a million violent Iraqi deaths since 2003. Many more due to breakdown of hospitals, water pollution and depleted uranium contamination. * Over a thousand professionals, academics, journalists, and medics murdered. * 4.5 million Iraqis displaced Iraqis, half abroad. With little education and job prospects a powder keg of anger and violence is threatening the whole region and the world. This dwarfs the scale of the Palestinian displacement of half- a century ago. * 30,000 Iraqi detainees at any one time by the US forces, and twice that number by the Western-armed Iraqi forces, ridden with sectarianism and criminal gangs. The ‘Iraqi government’ admits to 700 women detainees accused of terrorism. Rape and abuse cases have never been investigated…

US steering clear of Kurdish fight
PAULINE JELINEK, Associated Press Writer
The U.S. military commander in northern Iraq said Friday he plans to do “absolutely nothing” to counter Kurdish rebels who are staging deadly cross-border attacks into neighboring Turkey. It was the most blunt assertion yet by an American official in the last few weeks that U.S. forces should not be involved in the fight. The Bush administration has said repeatedly that the border crisis should be resolved through diplomacy. Asked what the U.S. military was planning to do, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon said: “Absolutely nothing.”…

“Loving” Lebanon Mean Never Having to Say You’re Sorry?
FRANKLIN LAMB
As US Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman packs his bags and prepares to depart Lebanon for his next assignment, he probably should be forgiven for feeling a bit abused these past few months. His pique surfaced on October 22 nd when he rudely insulted his host, his Christian eminence Bishop Mattar specifically, and Lebanese journalism in general when he likened it to a court clown tasked with bringing him some laughter in the morning which helps him forget his Lebanese concerns. Beirut’s media, including Al Safir has been having a field day commenting on the American Ambassador’s unprecedented pro Israel activities while claiming to “love Lebanon”…

“Don’t ask what they stole, ask what they left,” dryly jokes Khaled, a Palestinian refugee from Nahr al-Bared camp in northern Lebanon. It was evident from what remained of the crown molding along the ceiling that his three-story house was once grand. Now, only one year after the seven-year process of building the house was completed, the structure is largely destroyed and its contents looted. Israelis Enjoy Torturing Palestinians

Israeli soldiers enjoy torturing Palestinians, both men and women, and many of them use it to discharge energy, according to a recent study by an Israeli psychologist. “At one point or another of their service, the majority of the interviewees enjoyed violence,” Nufar Yishai-Karin, a clinical psychologist at the Hebrew University, told The Observer on Sunday, October 21. Interviewing 18 Israeli soldiers and three officers, Yishai-Karin heard confessions of brutal assaults troops routinely commit against Palestinians. All of the interviewees were among those serving with her at an army base in Rafah in the Gaza Strip. After finishing service, Yishai-Karin spent seven years investigating soldiers’ abuse of Palestinians during the first intifada in the late 1980s and early 1990s…

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported today that “total spending for U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and other activities related to the war on terrorism would amount to between $1.2 trillion and $1.7 trillion for fiscal years 2001 through 2017.” With $705 billion in interest, the cost of the wars could amount to $2.4 trillion — with $1.9 trillion in Iraq. Iraq today
…A U.S. soldier was killed and four were wounded in a roadside bombing in southern Baghdad, the military reported Friday. The unit was hit Thursday with an explosively formed penetrator, known as an EFP. A suicide bomber blew himself up near the headquarters of a nationalistic Sunni insurgent group that has turned against al-Qaida in Iraq, killing a woman on her way to the market Friday and wounding four other people, police said. The attacker detonated his explosives belt after he was unable to get through the main gate of the headquarters of the 1920s Revolution Brigades in Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles north of Baghdad. Witnesses told police that the bomber was a young man who ran toward the main gate and blew himself up after he was barred from entry….

…A friend who is closely associated with an International Organization, told me that the non official figure for Iraqi orphans is 5 million. I have no way of verifying this figure but I does not surprise me.(…) There are also hundreds of other Iraqi children rotting away in local prisons, under the pretext of helping the “insurgents.” (…) An article appeared yesterday, and it states that these child prisoners show signs of severe torture. Read on. “The five children showed signs of torture all over their bodies. Three had marks of cigarettes burns over their legs and one couldn’t speak as the shock sessions affected his conversation…” It is believed that there are about 220 child prisoners in Iraqi governmental run prisons. I say bullshit to that. Multiply this number by 3 at least, if not more. It is also common to witness an armed militia man walking into some hospital with some sick child prisoner (some not older than 12) and the doctors have to treat and ask no questions whatsoever. Some of these children are diagnosed with STD. Would you like to see your own children in a similar state ? So you have the orphans, the child prisoners and you also have another category, the traumatized for life, beyond help category…

Home of the Brave?
Dave Lindorff
Several years ago, I warned that as the Bush/Cheney administration sought to reduce politically problematic casualty rates in Iraq and Afghanistan, it would resort to increased use of air attacks to combat the growing insurgency in Iraq and the resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan. I also predicted that the result of this switch in tactics would lead to higher civilian casualties in those two countries. We’re now seeing those results. In the latest reports from Iraq, we had 15 women and children slain, mostly in their homes by rockets and bullets fired from helicopter and fixed-wing gunships which were allegedly in pursuit of some supposed “al Qaeda” fighters, and as many as 17 civilians killed in Baghdad’s Sadr City neighborhood when US forces called in air strikes after seeing a group of men they deemed to be hostile. Again those air strikes ended up killing more civilians than alleged enemy fighters. The casual use of the term “air strikes” belies the horror of what is happening….

CHEMICAL WEAPONS MYTHS
Malcom Lagauche
One of the most overstated subjects in recent history is the Iraqi chemical weapons program. First, we heard about the massive stocks of chemical weapons Iraq had prior to 1991. When U.N. inspectors arrived in Iraq, they were quite surprised to find that the alleged number of weapons mentioned in the Western media and by U.S. politicians, was no where near reality. There were many fewer. For the next 12 years, we heard that Iraq had not destroyed its stock of chemical weapons, and after December 1998, we had allegations shoved down our throats that the Iraqis were rebuilding their program. From 2001 until March 2003, U.S. politician-after-politician stated that Iraq’s efforts to rebuild its chemical weapons program had resulted in stockpiles larger than those Iraq possessed prior to 1991. There was absolutely no proof of these allegations. Once the issue became a steamroller, politicians of both major U.S. parties began to outdo each other with claims. All the time this was occurring, Iraq kept stating very clearly it had no banned weapons….

American casualties and ‘bravery’ plummet … Iraqi civilian casualties and Resistance rise
Imad Khadduri, Free Iraq
“This month has seen the smallest number of Americans killed in Iraq than any other month since March 2006. But the reasons may have less to do with progress in the war than with the way we’re now fighting it. Just 29 U.S. military personnel have died in Iraq in October so far—down from 65 in September, 84 in August, 78 in July, 101 in June … … However, some perspective is warranted. First, all told, 2007 has been a horrible year for American lives lost in this war—832 to date, more than the 822 lost in all of 2006, and, by the time the year ends, almost certainly more than the 846 killed in 2005 or the 849 in 2004. …What accounts for the decline in American deaths since the summer? It’s hard to say for sure, but one little-reported cause is almost certainly a relative shift in U.S. tactics from fighting on the ground to bombing from the air….
