Statement in Support of Saddam Hussein
Nabila Harb, on the behalf of the Free Arab Voice editorial board
The legitimate leader of what is supposed to be a sovereign state has been condemned to a criminal’s death by hanging and the response of the world is totally out of proportion to the event. Instead of an international outcry of outrage, there is nothing much in the way of condemnation of this illegitimate attempt to finish off one of the last symbols of Iraq’s independence. This should not be a surprise, however, as the entire chain of events that led to this point has been the product of international intimidation and bullying on the part of the U.S. and its Zionist ally. Saddam Hussein remains the President of Iraq. Foreign invasion and occupation of Iraq cannot change that fact. In fact, it is the President of the United States and his underling Tony Blair who should be tried and convicted of war crimes. The sequence of events that led to Saddam’s Hussein’s conviction at the hands of a kangaroo court will become one of the more shameful chapters in World History…

From Pomegranate to Dearborn: The loss of Iraqi art
Hashim Al-Tawil / The Arab American News
“Out of Iraq: Artists’ Meditations on Their Homeland,” is an exhibit currently appearing at the National Arab American Museum (NAAM) in Dearborn. The question is why? The exhibit is of questionable origin and value and does not accurately reflect Iraqi art in America. Worse, it reflects the art of those trying to ameliorate Iraqi art and replace it with post-Saddam works that acknowledge and accept the occupation of that country. The exhibit was initially curated by Leila Kubba and features the works of three Iraqi artists living in the States: Mohammed Fradi, Leila Kubba and Nadwa Qaragholi. The exhibit originated at the Pomegranate Gallery in Soho, a gallery owned by an Iraqi Jew, who left Iraq when he was a child (…) As military control alone cannot achieve the entire conquest of an occupied people, the occupation has employed a very specific strategy by which to ameliorate authentic Iraqi culture altogether, deconstruct its very essence and replace it with something more accepting of the foreign presence. Hence a program of “de-Arabizing” Iraq and to a certain extent “de-Islamicizing” Iraq has been implemented since the early days of the occupation. The majority of Iraq’s prominent artists and intellectuals resented the occupation and have not collaborated with the deconstruction of Iraqi culture…

GI Special 4L13: Soldier Says This War Can’t Be Won – December 16, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
I have a son in Iraq: the 1st Armored Division of the Army, stationed at a remote outpost near the hotbed Ramadi (…) Two weeks ago he called by satellite phone, awakening Amy and me in the dead of the night. Machine gun fire was all around him, the sound of war filling our ears and hearts with grief and fear of loss. He wanted to tell us that he loves us, that he was on a dangerous patrol and that if anything happened to his life, he would take his love for us to his death and beyond. He made it through that day and night. As this is written, he is still here with us. His tour was to end the first week in November but he was extended until next February. He said that the morale of the platoon was at an all-time low. He said that the war is creating more insurgency, rather than less. He says that he cannot trust anyone in an Iraqi military uniform. He said that most of the Iraq people do not want us there. He says that this war cannot be won! He has no faith in the politicians who sent him there..,

Abbas Starts His Coups d’état to Overthrough Hamas Government
PalestineFreeVoice
On Friday Hamas organized,a huge rally in Gaza City to mark 20 th anniversary of its foundation at the Yarmouk stadium. The stadium was too small for the huge numbers (over 250.000) attending the rally forcing some participants to stand on the roads surrounding the stadium. The rally was addressed by the PA Prime Minister, Ismail Haneyya, who survived an assassination attempt on Thursday evening on his return from a successful tour of Arab and Muslim countries. Haneyya told participants in the rally: “scheming is the merchandise of the weak; when some parties feel weak in the face of your steadfastness and determination, they resort to scheming and plotting.”…

US policy in Lebanon and in Palestine: A comparison
The Angry Arab News Service
The US is opposed to unarmed demonstrations in Lebanon but supports armed demonstrations by Dahlan gangs in Palestine; the US does not deal with the president in Lebanon, and only deals with the president in Palestine; the US says that the Sanyurah government is democratically elected and should be supported, but opposes the democratically elected government in Palestine and calls for its punishment; the US calls for disarming of militias in Lebanon, but arms and finances militias in Palestine; the US is opposed to early elections in Lebanon, but supports early elections in Palestine; the US is opposed to a national unity government in Lebanon and also opposes one in Palestine—the idea of national unity bothers the US it seems; the US calls for Syria to not intervene in Lebanon but wants Syria to intervene in Palestine to support US/Israeli puppets…

Leave The House
Iraqi screen
…I have to stay, since the Iraqi-Iranian war till now, I mean within the last thirty years, Iraq has not witnessed such black fearful days like these days, and if you talk with any person now, he will tell you that he expects the worse and that today is better than tomorrow. Even the three weeks of 2003 war with all their bruital bombardment and the killing of so many innocent Iraqis but still we were able to move in and around Baghdad, yes, with fear of dying of shooting but not to be killed by the Iraqis, our people. I bet any Iraqi now to contact a friend, a relative, any Iraqi or sit to talk with any person lives in Baghdad now, and he would tell you a single happy piece of news, all what he will be talking about is how to get out of this hell and leave it to the brave politicians who live at the Green Zone to fill their bellies with more million dollars on the barter of the lives of the Iraqi people…

WHAT DID YOU DO DURING THE WAR?
Malcom Lagauche
Human nature is very encompassing. Sometimes, we see people working for good causes, but they extract a heavy price in publicity to satisfy their egos. Other times, we see people who perform great deeds in an almost anonymous fashion. Rarely, however, do we see a person conduct extraordinary actions without self-publicity at the age of 16. Today’s article will be about such a person. In 1996, a friend called me and said, “You won’t believe what I just saw at school (San Diego City College). There is a photo exhibition showing the destruction of the Amiryah Bomb Shelter.” I asked, “Who’s putting it on?” My friend replied, “A student. His name is Chris Martin.” Before I talk about Martin, let me refresh your memories about the bombing of the Amiryah Shelter. On February 14, 1991, the U.S. bombed this civilian bomb shelter in Baghdad with two 2,000-pound bombs which were specially made to penetrate the thick walls of the structure…

Legal System in Iraq Staggers Beneath the Weight of War
MICHAEL MOSS, New York Times
…The judges reviewed evidence prepared by an American military lawyer — testimony from two soldiers, photographs and a sketch of the scene. The evidence went largely unchallenged, since Mr. Khalaf had no lawyer. The judges appointed one, but Mr. Khalaf had no chance to speak with him. Mr. Khalaf told the judges the soldiers were probably chasing a rogue nephew and denied that the explosives were his or ever in his house. “Let me examine the pictures,” he insisted. The judges ignored him. His lawyer said nothing, beyond declaring Mr. Khalaf’s innocence. The trial lasted 15 minutes. The judges conducted six trials of similar length and depth before lunch, then deliberated for four minutes. Five defendants were found guilty; one was acquitted. “The evidence is enough,” Judge Saeb Khorsheed Ahmed said in convicting Mr. Khalaf. “Thirty years.”…

The March to War: Political Crises in Lebanon and Palestine
MAHDI DARIUS NAZEMROAYA, Global Research
Lebanon and Palestine are both unique lands on the shores of the Eastern Mediterranean and within the Levant; they are two ancient lands that have seen great armies and navies come and go in the course of history. Under various names and identities, both Lebanon and Palestine have seen more than their share of bloodshed and violence as different groups, interests, and entities have sought in the course of history to take control of their lands…

Iraqi Chief Calls Forum to Press for National Reunification; Major Groups Are Absent
MARC SANTORA, New York Times
With unrelenting violence on the streets, political consensus in America and Iraq lacking, and the United States discussing the possibility of sending thousands more troops here, Iraq’s prime minister, Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, convened leaders from various communities across the country for talks about how to stem the bloodshed. While the conference was billed as an attempt at reconciliation, no one claiming to represent either the Shiite militias or the Sunni extremists, who together are driving the current sectarian strife, was in attendance (…) Mr. Maliki also repeated his invitation to former officers and soldiers in the old Iraqi Army, including some members of Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party, to re-enlist. There is little evidence that the appeals have had any impact, and no details have been laid out publicly about how the government would determine whose past was acceptable and whose was criminal…

Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice
In a dispatch posted at 5:04pm Makkah time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters detonated a bomb by a patrol of US occupation troops in al-Fallujah, midday Saturday after which fighting broke out between the Resistance men and US soldiers. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a source in the puppet police as saying that a bomb that had been planted in the intersection of the al-Ba’th and at-Ta’mim neighborhoods in southern al-Fallujah went off, disabling a US Humvee. No information on US casualties was available from that attack. Fighting erupted after the explosion as Resistance men battled the Americans who closed off the entire area for several hours following the half-hour battle…

AXIS OF EVIL WELCOMES CALL FOR NEW PALESTINIAN ELECTIONS
Desert Peace
Bush and Blair have both done such a marvelous job of running their own countries, they are now advising the Palestinians how to run theirs as well. If they hadn’t meddled from the day Hamas was elected and hadn’t sabotauged every efffort of theirs to try to form a government and rule there most likely wouldn’t be the strife we see today. What on earth makes them think that the Palestinians will change their votes this time? What on earth makes Abu Mazan think the same? All three might be in for a big surprise and all three might just find themselves on the job market very soon along with their buddy Olmert…

Israeli high court sanctions political assassinations
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
Israel’s high court Thursday ruled that the Zionist regime’s use of political assassination—so-called “targeted killings”—against members of Palestinian organizations in the occupied territories is not only justified but in conformity with international law. The ruling constituted the court’s long-delayed response to a case filed by two human rights groups seeking a ruling that the practice constituted a violation of international law and that such killings amounted to war crimes. Instead, the Israeli justices gave a green light to the security forces to continue assassinating those deemed “terrorists” by the Zionist authorities, thereby ensuring that the killing and maiming of both political opponents of Israeli occupation and innocent bystanders will not only continue, but escalate…

Women Lose Ground in the New Iraq
Once They Were Encouraged to Study and Work; Now Life Is ‘Just Like Being in Jail’
Nancy Trejos, Washington Post Staff Writer
…It was the first time she had left home in two months. “For a woman, it’s just like being in jail,” she said. “I can’t go anywhere.” Life has become more difficult for most Iraqis since the February bombing of a Shiite Muslim mosque in Samarra sparked a rise in sectarian killings and overall lawlessness. For many women, though, it has become unbearable. As Islamic fundamentalism seeps into society and sectarian warfare escalates, more and more women live in fear of being kidnapped or raped. They receive death threats because of their religious sects and careers. They are harassed for not abiding by the strict dress code of long skirts and head scarves or for driving cars. For much of the 20th century, and under various leaders, Iraq was one of the most progressive Middle Eastern countries in its treatment of women, who were encouraged to go to school and enter the workforce. Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party espoused a secular Arab nationalism that advocated women’s full participation in society. But years of war changed that…

palestine-info.co.uk
The PA government on Saturday refused PA chief Mahmoud Abbas’ call for holding early parliamentary elections, describing such as a decision as a coup against the Hamas-led government and the people’s democratic choice and “unconstitutional”. The Istanbul Conference
Arablinks.blogspot.com
Azzaman devotes a lot of space this morning to coverage of the Istanbul conference of Wednesday and Thursday (December 13 and 14), with a picture of the group. There were around 100 attendees, including politicians, clerics, intellectuals and activists, the reporter says, from Iraq and from outside of Iraq. Following an exibition of photos and videos to indicate the realities of what is occuring in Iraq, the meeting was convened by Abdulrahman bin Amir al-Nuaimi. He said the purpose of the meeting was to link up Sunnis in Iraq and outside of Iraq and to present a clear idea to those outside of conditions that Iraqi Sunnis are facing…

A few things
Xymphora
Excellent Gabriel Ash on the Zionist and Western misuse of the holocaust. It has recently struck me that the never-ending German support for Israel may in fact be a manifestation of the German love of barbarity. Political reasons mean that Germany can no longer attack its neighbors, so it lets out it frustration by financing an Israeli holocaust against the Arabs. Ash notes that the horror of the Jewish holocaust is that a Western nation used sophisticated technology to kill white people living within its own borders. That’s the horror of it. Similar attacks against non-whites living elsewhere don’t even merit comment…
