Depleted Uranium, Another Gift From The Imperialists
Pauline Paulinson, Countercurrents.org
Depleted uranium (DU) is cheap toxic waste from nuclear power plants and bomb production. However, uranium is one of earth’s heaviest elements and DU easily smashes through tanks, buildings and bunkers spontaneously catching fire and burning people alive. The radioactivity lasts over 4,500,000,000 years and causes cancer, leukemia, brain damage, kidney failure, and extreme birth defects. The blueprint for DU weapons is in a 1943 declassified document from the Manhattan Project. Harvard President and physicist James B. Conant developed poison gas in WW I and recommended the development of poison gas weapons from the radioactive trash of the atomic bomb project in WW II. At that time, it was known that radioactive materials dispersed in bombs from the air, from land vehicles or on the battlefield produced very fine radioactive dust which would penetrate all protective clothing, gas masks, filters or the skin contaminating the lungs and blood, thereby killing or causing illness very quickly. It was also recommended as a permanent terrain contaminant, which could be used to destroy populations by contaminating water supplies and agricultural land with radioactive dust. The first DU weapons system was developed for the Navy in1968. DU weapons have since been sold by the US to 29 countries…

The Olive Picker
Felicity Arbuthnot
When Bristol, U.K., based, Ed Hill’s elderly mother persuaded him to accompany her on a ‘Holy Land Tour’, as a committed atheist, he was underwhelmed. He returned from Palestine a changed man, in love with the place and people, enraged at their plight. He joined solidarlity movements, campaigned, with Bristol Palestine Solidarity campaign helped raise money for for an orphanage in the northern town of Tulkarm, to which Bristol mosques conbtributed generously. Then Palestine’s life blood, olives, touched his heart. He had learned of olive groves, some over a hundred years old, bulldozed by the Israelis. Then he heard of the Zaytoun Co-operative, formed by a group who put their scant savings, student loans, unemployment money, to export olive oil to the U.K. He started selling Zaytoun’s oils and the project became a passion: ‘I had crossed the line, I became a Zaytoun Zealot!’, says Hill. Last year, Zaytoun organised an olive harvest trip. Last year, Zaytoun organised an olive harvest trip. Farming families now depend almost entirely on their land for survival and the olive harvest has anyway, ever been one of the year’s key events for every Palestinian villager. Now Israeli settlers and soldiers harrass, attack and deter villagers travelling by cart, donkey and battered pick-up, armed just with tarpaulins and blankets, to catch the olives as they fall and whatever celebratory picnic they can afford at a time celebrated over millenia…

The current stage Witness a sharp and dangerous turn in the political process at all the local levels, regional and global, After the overwhelming victories achieved in the political, military, social, economic and cultural Thanks to the efforts of our political leadership, our religious authorities and the struggle of our religious Shiite follower of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and unlimited support from the Islamic Republic of Iran. As a result of the disappointment of the public [Sunnis], the political, social isolation, their failure to achieve any gain through their participation in the political process. NEW DAY~~~ NEW LIES
DesertPeace
The plane has landed and our brave, fearless leader has returned. It’s obvious that he was ‘briefed’ by his fellow intellectuals in the West, George Dubya and Condi… one of whom even has a PhD… impressive! The one thing that is missing from the ‘master plan’ is the human factor. In other words, what do the Palestinians want? How can we come to a situation where we can sit down and talk? But no… it’s easier to throw out accusations… easier to point a finger at who is to blame, and needless to say it is the Palestinians that are to blame for everything. The Palestinians that.. Have been cut off from society by a great wall of apartheid.. Have been denied the RIGHT to create a State of Palestine.. Have been denied a RIGHT OF RETURN for those wanting to.. Have been denied access to medical facilities.. Have been denied access to educational facilities.. Have been denied access to their own families.. husbands and fathers.. Have been victims of one of the evilist forms of occupation for nearly 60 years… But YES… they are to blame. The zionists are merely doing what they know best… SEE ABOVE..

100,000 Indian communists protest against death sentence for Saddam Hussein
The Associated Press
Some 100,000 Indian Communist Party members took to the streets of Calcutta on Thursday protesting the death sentence handed to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. The protesters called Hussein’s trial a farce and condemned U.S. President George W. Bush and U.S. policies in the Mideast. An Iraqi court earlier this month convicted Saddam for the killings of some 150 Shiite Muslims after an assassination attempt against him in 1982. Addressing the rally, Biman Bose, a party leader, accused the U.S. of repeatedly violating the sovereignty of developing nations…

Bush’s “New” Iraq Strategy Revealed: More Troops, More War
Chris Floyd
Did anyone really imagine it would be any different? The Guardian reports that Bush has already decided on his “new” strategy for Iraq, ahead of the recommendations of the “Iraq Study Group” he appointed – and ahead of the internal government review of strategy which he ordered only this week. And what is the strategy? More of the same. How could it be otherwise? The Decider-in-Chief cannot admit, not even to himself, that any of his decisions have ever been wrong. How can they be, when they are dictated by his “gut,” and his gut is guided by God Almighty? …

WAR NEWS FOR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2006
Today in Iraq
Four more U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq, the U.S. military said on Thursday, bringing to at least 10 the number killed over the past two days in gun battles and roadside bomb blasts around the country. Two U.S. soldiers were killed and two wounded in the eastern province of Diyala north of Baghdad when a bomb hit their vehicle during combat operations on Wednesday. A third soldier was shot dead in an operation in the same province. It was not clear whether the incidents were linked. Another U.S. soldier was shot dead in Baghdad on Tuesday, bringing to seven the number killed that day. At least 44 U.S. soldiers have been killed this month, half of them in the western Anbar province, heartland of the three-year-old Sunni Muslim insurgency. Police found 40 bullet-riddled bodies in Baghdad of men killed execution style, further evidence of the bitter sectarian strife gripping Iraq. A roadside bomb exploded at 7 a.m. in the Zayouna section of Baghdad, killing one Iraqi policemen and wounding three…

Iraq govt orders arrest of top Sunni cleric
Alastair Macdonald, Reuters
Demands are growing in Washington to start bringing troops home, and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and U.S. commanders face a race against time to build Iraqi security forces capable of stifling the sectarian strife between Sunnis and Maliki’s majority Shi’ite Muslims that is pushing Iraq towards civil war. Fissures are also opening in the six-month-old national unity government after dozens of civil servants were seized by men in police uniform on Tuesday. The Sunni minister whose employees were abducted is boycotting the cabinet until they are found…

US plans last big push in Iraq
Strategy document calls for extra 20,000 troops, aid for Iraqi army and regional summit
Simon Tisdall, The Guardian
President George Bush has told senior advisers that the US and its allies must make “a last big push” to win the war in Iraq and that instead of beginning a troop withdrawal next year, he may increase US forces by up to 20,000 soldiers, according to sources familiar with the administration’s internal deliberations. Mr Bush’s refusal to give ground, coming in the teeth of growing calls in the US and Britain for a radical rethink or a swift exit, is having a decisive impact on the policy review being conducted by the Iraq Study Group chaired by Bush family loyalist James Baker, the sources said…

I hate Iraqis, rape accused tells military court
icWales
One of four US soldiers accused of raping a 14-year-old Iraqi girl showed little remorse, and even smiled during a confession to charges he conspired to kill her and her family. Even before the hearing at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to announce a plea agreement, Spc James Barker, 23, slapped hands with other soldiers and grinned as he smoked a cigarette in the rain. A bailiff scolded him. And when he described for the judge the assault in his own words, he gave vivid details of the rape with deadpan delivery. “That’s pretty much all I have to say,” Barker muttered with a shrug after describing raping the screaming girl…

Israel’s reign of terror must be stopped
Linda S. Heard, Online Journal Contributing Writer
While channel surfing the other day I came across a rerun of Gandhi just in time to witness the scene where British troops gun down unarmed fleeing protestors. As a Brit, I experienced a moment of shame which I was able to quickly suppress with the thought this brutal act happened long ago. Nobody today would fire on a crowd of civilians and if they did they would be prosecuted for war crimes right? There would be an international outcry. The UN would be scrambling to pass condemnatory resolutions or worse. Isn’t that right?…

Iraq government in crisis after staff abducted, tortured
Business Day
Kidnappers tortured many of the dozens of hostages seized in a daylight raid on a government building and killed some of them, a minister said today, warning he felt Iraq no longer had an effective government. Higher Education Minister Abed Dhiab al-Ujaili, a Sunni Arab member of the Shiite-led unity government, said some 75 hostages remained in captivity after the raid by militiamen wearing police-style uniforms, 40 of them his ministry’s staff. The minister’s comments came as the sectarian violence in the capital showed no let-up…

GI Special 4K15: “You Couldn’t Do Much Worse” – November 15, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
“I have a sneaking suspicion that things are going to continue to be horrible in Iraq, but I’m open to any new ideas,” he said.
“Failing in a new way is at least trying. The whole ‘staying the course’ thing is not trying.”
“Had the man [Rumsfeld] listened to his generals we would either A, not have gone to Iraq in the first place, or B, not still be there because we would have committed 400,000 troops from the beginning,” said the officer.
“Maybe I wouldn’t have had to go there twice and miss the birth of my first child. Maybe a lot of guys wouldn’t have been blown up. There is a high price for such arrogance.”

(…) That resentment seems to be dwindling today as I watched on the news a country vote to send a message to our president, a strong resounding voice arouse from the churches, civic centers, and other polling places of America yesterday telling our president that we will no longer stand by and watch a failed policy kill our sons, brothers, sisters, and daughters in a poorly planned, poorly executed, and poorly strategized war.

The New Media Offensive for the Iraq War
Norman Solomon
The American media establishment has launched a major offensive against the option of withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. In the latest media assault, right-wing outfits like Fox News and the Wall Street Journal editorial page are secondary. The heaviest firepower is now coming from the most valuable square inches of media real estate in the USA — the front page of the New York Times. The present situation is grimly instructive for anyone who might wonder how the Vietnam War could continue for years while opinion polls showed that most Americans were against it. Now, in the wake of midterm elections widely seen as a rebuke to the Iraq war, powerful media institutions are feverishly spinning against a pullout of U.S. troops…
