News for kids !
Arablinks.blogspot.com
…Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri was back in the news yesterday. AP said four unnamed people told its reporter that al-Duri had issued a secret order to the armed Baathist resistance groups to lay down their arms following the Saddam death-sentence. Actually, he didn’t. But he should have. That was all they meant. You have to know how to read these things (…) When the AP talked about a “major concession to insurgents and the Sunni community”, they did not really mean such a thing occurred, only that it should occur. They suggest you might like to imagine it happening. Just like the capture, death, and then the surrender yesterday of Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri…

Iraqi archaeologist quits after threats
Bill Bowder
THE former chairman of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in Iraq, Dr Donny George, has been forced to abandon his job and flee the country because of religious persecution, Iraq experts said last week. Dr George, an Assyrian Christian, was concerned about the looting of Iraq’s archaeological sites, and had set up a security force to guard them. Since his departure, international archaeologists have been concerned about the preservation of Iraqi antiquities. Reports warn that indiscriminate digging has left some of the country’s 100,000 archaelogical sites pockmarked “like the moon”. A letter to the Iraqi government, signed by 14 experts, including Professor Harriet Crawford, who chairs the British School of Archaeology in Iraq (BSAI), protested that too many treasures had been lost already. Antiquarians should be “above politics”, its authors said (…) Dr Eleanor Robson, an expert in Iraqi antiquities, said Sadarists (followers of the extreme Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr) now ran the Ministry of Culture, and had no interest in pre-Islamic heritage. Instead of preserving all of Iraq’s heritage, the Ministry of Culture was prioritising the restoration of Shia shrines…

THE ZIONIST MEDIA FOR YOU
Palestinian Pundit
Here is the caption that AP used with most of its photos of the Beit Hanoun funeral: “A relative carries the body of Maram Al-Athamna, 1, during her funeral in the Gaza town of Beit Hanoun Thursday Nov. 9, 2006. Tens of thousands of grieving Gazans, weeping in anguish and screaming for revenge, crammed into a cemetery on Thursday to bury 18 civilians killed by an errant Israeli artillery barrage that tore through a crowded residential neighborhood. (AP Photo/ Adel Hana)” So AP has already concluded its own investigation and determined that the victims were “killed by an errant Israeli artillery barrage.”…

Myth of the brave soldier
Mickey Z.
In a recent correspondence, Adam Engel wrote: “One of the greatest myths about America is that it’s the ‘home of the brave.’ Once, perhaps, prior to 1492. Now, it’s most likely the greatest collection of cowards in the Milky Way Galaxy.” Engel specifically mentioned our lack of response to losing habeas corpus and to being both “subject to eternal imprisonment for liberating animals from vivisection labs” and “complicit in the murder of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, Palestinians, Lebanese, Afghanis, South and Central Americans, Haitians etc. etc. etc.” He could’ve also included our acquiescence in a frighteningly broad range of areas, e.g. access to health care, tolerance for voting irregularities, directly funding the Israeli war machine, and stomaching the groupthink behind saluting a flag. Americans talk the talk but when ordered to remove their shoes before going through airport security, it’s “yes sir” all the way…

The Iraq Mandate
Robert Dreyfuss
…And finally, the Iraqi resistance. Without the emergence of the nationalist resistance in Iraq in the fall of 2003, there would have been no war, no antiwar movement and no landslide of 2006. Should Democrats, Republicans, generals or bureaucrats get cold feet about leaving Iraq, they’d better realize: Iraq’s insurgency isn’t going away until the last American soldier leaves Iraq. Is this enough to shatter the stone Sphinx and get President Bush to leave Iraq? I don’t know. Short of an outright act of defiance by the Democrats, such as cutting off funds for the war, the president can stand firm. He says he will, and he might. We’ve already sunk a trillion dollars into his illegal war of aggression, and it has cost thousands of American lives and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi ones. It’s entirely possible that a thousand more Americans, and a few hundred thousand more Iraqis, will die between now and November 2008…

George and Nancy Make Nice
Kurt Nimmo
…As for foreign policy, Pelosi is as Zionist friendly as any Straussian neocon, albeit in a fuzzy Democrat sort of way, and thus we can expect more murder and mayhem in the Middle Eastern neighborhood. Pelosi “denies that the key issue is Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza,” writes Mark Gaffney. “The real issue, she states, is the survival of Israel” and “the biggest danger to Israel today comes from Iran, whose nuclear ambitions, though still unproved, also threaten the US. Her perspective contains the seed of ominous things to come, because, after all, something will have to be done about Iran, right? Yes, and soon… Meanwhile, Pelosi manages to overlook Israel’s brutal treatment of the Palestinians,” a consistent crime, recently magnified to disgusting dimension by Israel’s recent attack on Beit Hanoun in the Gaza, killing innocents in their beds. “The United States will stand with Israel now and forever. Now and forever,” Pelosi avowed last year at the AIPAC meeting, never mind the seeming inexhaustible crimes against humanity. …

Counting the Iraqi dead – again
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
The latest entry in the “how many Iraqis are dead” sweepstakes: Iraq’s health minister said about 150,000 have been killed by insurgents since the war started, giving the government’s first overall casualty estimate. Iraq’s Health Minister Ali al-Shemari said about 150,000 Iraqis have been killed by insurgents since the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion.(…) Count the errors. First of all, “150,000 killed” is not a “casualty estimate,” it’s a “fatality estimate.” Second, an estimate of the number of Iraqis killed by one source (”insurgents”) can hardly be considered an “overall casualty estimate.” Surely even the health minister wouldn’t claim that no Iraqis have been killed by the Americans or by the Iraqi government forces, would he? Third, the all-inclusive, yet unexplained term “insurgents.” Does that estimate include Iraqis killed by sectarian militias and death squads?…

Chavez: Bush should get death penalty
UPI
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez slammed the Saddam Hussein death penalty and said it is U.S. President George W. Bush who should be sentenced to death. “If sentencing is to be done,” said Chavez earlier this week, “the first one to be given the most severe sentence this planet has to offer should be the president of the United States, if we’re talking about genocidal presidents,” the Miami Herald reported Thursday. The leftist Venezuelan leader has often criticized the Bush administration for its war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan and for allegedly trying to overthrow his own administration…

A post Beit Hanoun sampler
Arablinks.blogspot.com
The Gaza-based newspaper Al-Samidun (”those who resist”) says in its edition of Thursday November 9 that a number of armed factions are calling for a resumption of suicide operations inside Israel in response to the Beit Hanoun massacre—”technical error”, I beg your pardon—which it says brought the death toll of Palestinians to 5557 since the beginning of the intifada in September 2000, citing figures compiled by Agence France Presse. The paper quotes a Hamas leader Nazar Riyan calling on “mujahideen everywhere to resume martyrdom operations within Palestine-48, in Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jaffa and elsewhere, in response to the Israeli crimes and massacres.” And the paper says the same appeals were made by the military wings of Fatah and other factions. Palestine-48 is a name for Palestine as it existed prior to the creation of Israel in 1948…

GI Special 4K8: What You Wish For – November 8, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
Be Careful What You Wish For: Get It?
Already, Mrs. Pelosi, who would likely be Speaker if her party wins a House majority, is privately trying to insist that liberals tamp down expectations of getting out of Iraq now.
Democratic allies in the House say she wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize the new recruits’ electoral future, and by extension Democrats’ newfound power.

Policy-change for dummies
Arablinks.blogspot.com
…The Bush administration stood out yesterday for its failure to condemn the Israeli slaughter of 20 unarmed residents of Beit Hanoun in the worst round of civilian killing by the Israeli occupation forces in a number of years, lending support to Atwan’s argument that any engagement in a so-called “political process” in these circumstances is a sham. There is no point. The same logic is taking hold among the Sunni political parties in Iraq. At the most delicate point in the national reconciliation process, the symbol to many of an independent Iraq is sentenced to death by hanging. It was a gratuitous act, and probably there is no one of the age of reason in Iraq, or children either, for that matter, who doesn’t realize the Bush administration was behind this, and that the logic seemed clear. Those who make the real decisions are against national reconciliation. What point is there in pretending…

DAILY WAR NEWS FOR THURSDAY, November 9, 2006
Today in Iraq
Seven civilians were killed and 27 wounded when a suicide car bomber blew himself up near Mishin trade complex in the Riyadh area of southeast Baghdad, a medic at Baghdad’s Ibn Nafis hospital said. A security source said that first a mortar fell on the complex, and when people gathered near the site a car bomber then approached and detonated his vehicle. A bomb exploded in the Suq Haraj market in central Baghdad’s Bab al-Sharqi area, killing three and wounding 19. A car bomb in the Faraj market at Baghdad’s northeastern Qahira neighbourhood killed three and wounded 12…

Nightmare in Beit Hanoun
How Gaza Offends Us All
JENNIFER LOEWENSTEIN
An opened jaw with yellowed teeth gaped out of its bloodied shroud. The rest of the head parts were wrapped in a plastic bag placed atop the jaw and nostrils, as if to be close to the place to which it once belonged. The bag was red from the pieces that were stuffed inside it. Below the jaw was a human neck slit open midway down: a fleshy, wet wound smiling pink and oozing out from the browned skin around it, the neck that was still linked to the body below it. Above him, in the upper freezer of the morgue lay a dead woman, her red hennaed hair visible for the first time to strange men around her. More red plastic wrapped around an otherwise absent chin. She was dead for demonstrating outside a mosque in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza where more than 60 men sheltered during the artillery onslaught by Israeli tanks and cannons…

ACTION NOW: PUT A HALT TO THE ISRAELI MASSACRES IN THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES
Sabbah’s blog
…Stop supporting the indiscriminate slaughter of Palestinian women and children. I expect this country to do what it must to stop the killings in Gaza. Israel would not be able to commit these crimes if not for the support of the U.S. In fact, today, I saw pictures of shrapnel being pulled out of one of the Palestinian victims in Beit Hanoun and that shrapnel was stamped: Made in the U.S. It is unacceptable for us to be supporting war crimes in the territories. I expect my elected officials to take heed of the elections we just had in this country. The Republicans ought to realize that we have had enough war, lies and corruption. The Democrats should know that we can, as a people, come together for change and that they must support justice in this world by condemning Israeli atrocities or we will not vote for them either. Supporting Israeli war crimes is not only immoral but it is never going to make this country safer…

If He Is Israeli Left, Who Needs Right?
Deconstructing David Grossman
Gilad Atzmon
The world, so it seems, is giving a standing ovation to the new Israeli orator, the author, David Grossman. Israel’s public relations desperately needs a righteous intellectual, an author who ‘talks peace’, a man who preaches ‘reconciliation’, a man of shalom . Yesterday the Guardian published Grossman’s last week speech at the Yitzchak Rabin memorial in Tel Aviv. Grossman is a ‘matured enlightened Israeli’, a light left Zionist who craves for a change. I read Grossman’s speech, and I must say that though the man is seen by some as an Israeli left intellectual, I see in his speech nothing but hard core Jewish supremacy and even maintenance of the old crude Zionist racial agenda. Grossman, like other Israelis, is totally submerged within a Zio-centric chauvinist discourse, a discourse of denial of the Palestinian cause; i.e., the right of return…

The Deeper Reality Behind Rumsfeld’s Resignation
Chris Floyd
As Don Rumsfeld is tossed overboard by the panicky Bushes (who value loyalty to themselves above all other virtues but never, ever, practice it toward others; there will be many more bodies left behind as the Family rallies to clean up Junior’s mess again), Steve Gilliard steps in below to remind us that what we are actually dealing with here is not politics, not some Beltway horse race, or some idiotic media game of “who’s up, who’s down.” The issue is mass murder — thousands of Americans, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis — and human suffering beyond imagining for millions more…

Israel’s Massacre and PR operation
Lenin’s Tomb
A nice chap over at MediaLens supplied the following clip from BBC News about the Israeli massacre of 18 civilians in Gaza: You noted, if you could stomach all of that hideousness from the Israeli PR woman, the repetitive misdirection, the strident assertions about the difference between Us and Them, the simply incredible claims about this unfortunate accident, tragedy, Israel never ever targets civilians etc etc. Well, now, have a look at this piece about lies you aren’t supposed to believe…

Fierce Fighting in the Besieged District
Sabah Ali, BRussells Tribunal
Adhamiya, the northern and oldest district of Baghdad, has been exposed to daily shelling and militias’ raids for few months now. While the citizens heroically defended their families and houses, the Iraqi security forces were practically putting the area under continuous siege. But in the last 3 days, and despite the curfew, Adhamiya was shelled continuously with rockets, mortars, and militias raids with the government and the security forces doing nothing about it, apart from covering it. Today the area was bombed by 23 mortars, killing at least 8 and injuring tens while the fighting is going on in many parts of it. Adhamiya citizens called upon the government to take an active attitude towards the massacres committed there by the armed militias on daily level, according to Al-Sharqiya satellite TV in Baghdad…
