Iraqi Opposition Leader Speaks
Robert Dreyfuss
The following is the transcript of a lengthy interview, slightly edited for grammar, that I conducted by telephone with Salah Mukhtar. Mukhtar, who lives in Yemen, is a former Iraqi official and diplomat who worked in the Information Ministry and who served at the United Nations and as Iraq’s ambassador to India. At the time of the invasion in 2003, he was Iraq’s ambassador to Vietnam. Though he does not claim to be a spokesman for the resistance in Iraq or for the B! aath party, he is close to both. Here is what he had to say: Q. How strong is the Iraqi resistance? A. The armed resistance has finished all the preparations to control power in Iraq. The middle class collaborators with the United States have started the leave Iraq already. Most of them are outside Iraq: Ahmed Chalabi, Iyad Allawi and others. A second wave of agents are preparing to leave, and some have already left, to Jordan, to Syria, to Britain, and some other places, because the strategic conflict, practically speaking, has reached the point of putting an end to the occupation. The resistance is controlling Baghdad now…

Iraqi Resistance Strikes Camp Falcon in Major Military Assault
Excerpts compiled by Michel Chossudovsky, Globalresearch.ca
…Several reports suggest that the attack had the features of a major military operation, which does not fit the pattern of media reporting out of Iraq, which invariably presents an “insurgency” involved in isolated and uncoordinated guerrilla attacks by socalled “terrorist” groups. There are indicaitons that the official reports are hiding the truth. Given the nature of the blast, which gen! erated a mushroom type explosion, there is reason to believe that the losses and human casualities were substantial. The attack suggests that the protected International Zone (IZ), the socalled Green Zone is no longer secure and that US forces are no longer in control…

CHILD LABOUR…THEN AND NOW
DesertPeace
Zionists get very defensive when a comparrison is made to the present situation in Occupied Palestine to that of the Jews living under nazi occupation. In that light, I will not add any commentary here, except to ask one question… CAN YOU SEE THE SIMILARITIES??? The following is taken from THIS report on the holocaust… Children and adult prisoners Children under the age of around 12 were generally deemed unfit for work and were therefore immediately taken t! o the gas chambers. However, death may have been preferable because those who were allowed to work were treated with equal contempt by the SS. (…) The following is taken from THIS report on Israeli prisons. Forced labor for Palestinian children in Israeli prison Many Palestinian children in Israeli Telmond Prison are being exploited by “forced labor in which they must work eight hours for a few shekels,” as reported by the Prisoners Information Center. One of the children made a statement after his release. “The prison administration has forced all prisoners in Telmond Prison to work eight hours for very low wages.” …

Hillary Clinton Changes Tune on Iraq
Kurt Nimmo
New Yorkers, get a clue. Hillary Clinton wants you over a barrel and a none too polite insertion. According to the predictably neocon Democrat friendly New York Times, Clinton “mixed presidential-like gravitas and standard talking points in the second and final debate of her re-election race … assertively challenging policy on Iraq, Iran and North Korea.” I’ll ignore the nauseating “presidential-like gravitas” comment, too absurd for detailed comment, and move on to! Iraq, Iran, and North Korea. Clinton, counting on the collective amnesia of her constituents (no, not the Israeli lobby, the people of New York), tells us “if Americans had the correct information about Saddam Hussein’s military capabilities” the invasion would have never happened. In other words, Clinton expects us to believe, if she simply had the right mix of information, she would have voted against Bush’s invasion and occupation resolution that streaked through Congress in September, 2002…

Now we know what we know, why is Blair still in office?
Henry Porter
Over the course of little more than a week, we have learned that civilian casualties so far in the Iraq war may be more than 600,000; that Britain’s Chief of the General Staff believes the conflict could break the army apart; that a federal solution to the growing chaos involving the effective dismemberment of the country is being openly discussed in America; that the US Iraq Study Group, headed by Republican grandee James Baker, is recommending! that the US military withdraws to bases outside Iraq and seeks Iranian and Syrian help; and that Britain is now the number one al-Qaeda target, partly, it seems clear, as a consequence of events in Iraq. There should be at least one universal response to this in Britain. Why is Tony Blair still Prime Minister after leading his country into such a disastrous war?…

The Nuclear Arms Race and National Sovereignty
Rodrigue Tremblay, Globalresearch.ca
Are we moving towards a lawless world in which only countries with second-strike nuclear capability will have real national sovereignty? Some countries seem to think that the only way a country can be protected from the actions of international (nuclear) bullies is to acquire the deterrence that having nuclear weapons offers. Countries such as North Korea, Iran, Israel, Brazil and others seem to have reached the conclusion that in! a world where international law is violated with impunity and where the United Nations Charter is a dead letter, a government that does not plan for the acquisition of nuclear armaments is derelict in its duties toward its citizens. In fact, it is estimated that between 30 and 40 non-nuclear countries have the technical skill, and in some cases the required material, to build an atomic bomb.—What is required for these countries to jump onto the nuclear wagon is a few more years of irresponsible U.S. foreign policy…

Taliban chief promises victory
Aljazeera.net
Mullah Mohammad Omar, the spiritual head of the Taliban, has vowed to bring Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, before an Islamic tribunal. The warning came through an online Ramadan message, posted on Sunday to mark Eid el-Fitr, the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan (…) Afghans must take care of unity in Jihad. I would again ask Mujahideen to intensify their attacks but they should avoid any harm to innocent people and children. They should not commit! any act which is contrary to Shariah. It is necessary for Mujahideen not to go for sectarian hatred. All Muslims of different schools of thought are brothers and there is no difference among them. At the end I appeal to Mujahideen to show patience. I pray for the Mujahideen in Iraq and their more success. …

Putin Gets Mugged in Finland
Mike Whitney
Most people won’t pay any attention to this week’s energy summit in Lahti, Finland, but they should. It is particularly instructive for anyone who is interested in the latest developments in the global resource war. The purpose of the meeting was to work out the nettlesome issues of energy policy, but the hidden agenda was to pressure Russian President Putin into signing away the control of his country’s critical assets to the big-players in the world energy cartel. The p! roposed “Energy Charter Treaty” is designed to tie up Russia’s resources through legal obligations which serve the overall interests of the energy giants. The treaty is no different than the EU Constitution which was voted down last year when the “informed” European public realized that it was just another boondoggle set up by big business to override national sovereignty, environmental safety, and civil liberties. The Energy Charter Treaty and the EU Constitution focus on the very same objectives, that is, establishing the legal framework for placing the world and its dwindling resources in the hands of a small cadre of obscenely-wealthy western plutocrats…

Saddam lawyer’s documents stolen
Aljazeera.net
A lawyer defending one of Saddam Hussein’s co-defendants in the al-Anfal trial is boycotting the court after his documents were stolen from the lawyers’ room at the court building. Badia Arif Izzat, lawyer of former Iraqi intelligence director in northern Iraq, Farhan al-Jubouri, and Tariq Aziz, the former deputy prime minister, told Aljazeera.net that he would not attend the next session scheduled for October 30. Speaking to Aljazeera.net from Syria, Izzat said: “Ar! ound 1,000 documents have been stolen from my desk in the lawyers’ lounge at the Iraqi supreme court building.” Izzat’s office in Baghdad had already come under attack last month when armed men raided the office and kidnapped his secretary, stole computers and documents…

The Four Ubaidi Brothers
Iraqi screen
Muahmmed, Ahmed, Ali and Salah are four brothers from a Sunni family, the eldest is in his mid thirties and the others are younger then him, their tribe is Ubaidi, like most of the fathers in Iraq now, their father left to Syria few weeks ago to rent a house their and take the entire family, the mother and four daughters. Four days ago, the sisters were sleeping down stairs in the morning while the four brothers were upstairs like everyday preparing themselves for another fas! ting day in Ramadan. At six am, the house raided by more than fifty militia men, some of them were wearing uniforms of the ministry of Interior, others were civilians carrying RPGS and equipped with different kinds of weapons and ministry of Interior cars. The house lies in Al-Qahera district, a place dominated by Mahdi army and Bader brigade, they were the only Sunni family in their neighbourhood but they were living there for more than 35 year. Neocon Democrat Jane Harman in Hot Water
Kurt Nimmo
It is said, come the midterm elections, Democrats will likely take possession of the House and, less likely, the Senate. It is said this will tip the balance of power in Washington and, whizo-bango, we will get more representative government, corruption will be on the run, and the neocon cabal will be on the skids. If you believe this, you may as well wish for a pony. In fact, there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans, they both represent the prop! erty party, as Gore Vidal deems the gang in control of the government. If you vote for Democrats on November 7, you are voting for more of the same. As an example, take House Congress critter Jane Harman. “The Department of Justice is investigating whether Rep. Jane Harman and the pro-Israel group [AIPAC] worked together to get her reappointed as the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee,” reports Time…

Corrode Your Conformity:
Big Brother Doesn’t Practice Fraternal Love
Jason Miller
October 17, 2006 is a watershed date in the epic struggle between oppressors and oppressed. Events of that day undoubtedly prompted Marx and Engels to awaken from their eternal slumber and spin violently in their graves. A mere swish of the pen by a conscienceless swine effectively transferred absolute power into the hands of a relative handful of rich and powerful individuals and corporations. Happy birthday, Big Brother! ! Over two centuries ago, 25,000 intrepid souls sacrificed their lives to free the American Colonies from the clutches of a ruthless empire and to found a nation based on democratic principles. Tragically, on 10/17 the tattered remains of freedom for which American Revolutionary soldiers spilled crimson rivers were reduced to mere abstractions by a miniscule volume of ink. How ironic that in a nation obsessed with beating ploughshares into swords, a pen was the weapon used to finalize the subjugation of the masses…

In a Land Without Order, Punishment Is Power
Conflicts Among Shiites Challenge a Village Sheik in Southern Iraq
Anthony Shadid, Washington Post Foreign Service
A year or so ago, just one poster adorned Sheik Adnan Aidani’s wall. It was a portrait of Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, Iraq’s faded but still preeminent cleric, whose stern visage glared down on visitors to the tribal sheik’s house along a forest of date palms in the southern Iraqi countryside. Today, there are perhaps a dozen posters with new f! aces. The names blur, but together they represent the power, beyond appeal, of men with guns. Aidani smiled, a little sheepishly, as he surveyed the posters. Gifts, he called them, the kind you don’t return. “Everyone’s on his own,” he explained. Far from the killing fields of the capital, Baghdad, and a half-hour drive from the southern city of Basra, which has been racked by thousands of assassinations, Aidani has an unenviable task in his warren of mud brick, cinder block and concrete: keeping order in a land without it, where society is fracturing, crumbling, even disintegrating. There is a saying in southern Iraq today, “No one pays respect to the saint who won’t mete out punishment.” Violence is the cadence of the country…
