the dirtiest bomb on earth
The Truth Will Set You Free
Always warning that other nations might use dirty bombs against US, our government has been using the dirtiest bomb on earth since the first Gulf war. And which country set the precedent? Israel – as far back as 1973 – against Egypt. “In 1995, the director of AEPI told assistant secretary of the army, ‘we can’t reduce the toxicity [of DU munitions] – it’s not possible.’ The United States Army [common task training?] states very specifical! ly- ‘uranium contamination will make food and water unusable’ and yet we use it in combat all over the place. That’s why the United Nations Subcommission on Human Rights had ruled that uranium munitions were an illegal weapon – cause they’re indiscriminate. They can’t be cleaned up and they last for eternity.” —Dr. Doug Rokke, US Army Health Physicist, Nuclear Medicine Sciences Officer…

Bush loses the “Battle of Baghdad, the Battle for Iraq”
Len Hart, The Existentialist Cowboy
…Bush calls “victory” his objective; he talks about the “enemy”. What he has utterly failed to understand is that the enemy in Iraq is the people themselves for whom the US presence is an abominable violation of their nation’s sovereignty and the personhood of each citizen of Iraq. What, therefore, is victory when the people themselves oppose the occupation. Does victory consist of the brutal murder of every last Iraqi ! who dares to oppose the illegal aggression waged against him and his nation? Bush might have gotten away with an endless string of lies and platitudes had not the lack of victory been so spectacular that it will neutralize any “October Surprise” that Karl Rove might have wanted to stage…

GOD BLESS AMERICA (AND OUTER SPACE)
Malcom Lagauche
Recently, George Bush read a statement that should have been headline news worldwide, yet few publications gave it any ink. He said that outer space belongs to the United States and if anybody tries to get in the way, they will be quickly eliminated. On October 19, 2006, The Register, a British publication, ran an article called “U.S. Stakes Claim on Space.” The author, Lucy Sherriff, stated: The U.S. has claimed “dibs” on the Universe with its new space policy.! The document, signed by President Bush, was released on a Friday, just before a long weekend in the States. This, in itself, has caused a bit of a stir, but no more so than the tone and content of the document. In it, the U.S. government allocates itself rights to access and use outer space without anyone else getting in the way. It also sets security at the heart of the space agenda, frequently citing its right to use space as part of its national defense…

The President and the Marquis: Habeas corpus vs. lettres de cachet
Richard Marsden, The Business of Emotions
Habeas corpus is an ancient right, rooted in English common law. It takes the form of a writ issuing out of a court of justice which requires the body of a person restrained of liberty to be brought before the judge or into court, that the lawfulness of the restraint may be investigated and determined (Oxford English Dictionary). Lettres de cachet were letters bearing the imprint of the King of Fr! ance, under the royal seal or “cachet”, which removed the individuals named therein from the regular judicial system and placed them under the personal arrest of the King. They were, essentially, warrants of arbitrary arrest. Lettres de cachet could be petitioned for and many an enemy or rival was dispensed, sometimes permanently, in this way. It was, of course, to get rid of the arbitrary powers of the Ancien Régime, among other things, that the French took to the streets in 1789. Habeas corpus is a right the French literally fought for. So did Americans. That’s why it’s in the Constitution. Are Americans about to give it up without a fight? They already have…

Marwan Speaks About His Kidnapping – 10.20.2006
Alive in Baghdad
Aside from death, abduction of a correspondent is just about the last thing anyone involved in a media organization wants to hear. On July 23rd, that is exactly what happened. Kidnappings have now become routine in Baghdad. Luckily Marwan was released approximately three days after his kidnapping. Unfortunately when Marwan was first kidnapped, we could not tell his story, due to his parent’s request and fear for his safety. Today we bring you the fi! rst segment of a two part interview about his kidnapping and detention by one of Baghdad’s militias, apparently the Mahdi Army. Marwan was kidnapped while shooting b-roll, that is supporting footage depicting life around Baghdad. It is an unfortunate reality that shooting footage on the streets of Baghdad is an incredibly dangerous…

Exclusive: Feds Probe a Top Democrat’s Relationship with AIPAC
TIMOTHY J. BURGER/WASHINGTON, Time
Did a Democratic member of Congress improperly enlist the support of a major pro-Israel lobbying group to try to win a top committee assignment? That’s the question at the heart of an ongoing investigation by the FBI and Justice Department prosecutors, who are examining whether Rep. Jane Harman of California and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) may have violated the law in a scheme to get Harman r! eappointed as the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, according to knowledgeable sources in and out of the U.S. government…

GI Special 4J21: Disenchantment – October 21, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
Canada’s foreign minister has told Nato that the alliance’s other members must provide more support to the military operation in southern Afghanistan.
The BBC’s Lee Carter says Ottawa is growing increasingly frustrated over the unwillingness of mainly European Nato members to deploy troops to help fight mounting Taleban resistance.
Carter said such disenchantment was also being felt on the ground in Kandahar, with soldiers airing concerns on Canadian radio.
He added that Mr Mackay’s plea comes as the country’s conservative government grapples with declining public support for the mission.
[The most important news of the fall, so far, gets one line. No problem; when the “disenchantment” turns to action, it will be impossible to ignore. T]

Raising the Dead for the Midterms
Kurt Nimmo
It stinks of desperation: as the midterm elections close in, the RNC has released a fire and brimstone ad, depicting an all too familiar cast of characters—the dead Osama, the banal doctor Ayman al-Zawahiri, and a congregation of ninja-clad terrorists training in comical jujutsu. “These are the stakes,” the ad balefully concludes. “Vote Nov. 7.” According to the Boston Globe, the “ad, which is being e-mailed from the Republican National Committee to millions of GOP act! ivists, is unusual both for the directness of its emotional appeal and for what some party leaders acknowledge that it represents: the need for the GOP to shift the national discussion to the party’s perceived strength of national security before the midterm elections.” In other words, the Republicans are once again exorcising the Muslim Freddy Kruger, “raising the level of fear of a terrorist attack, and framing the issue in a way that could benefit the Republicans.”…

Muslim Holocaust
Mohammed Khaku
The recent study carried out by team of researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad published in The Lancet say over 655,000 Iraqi’s have died since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Their finding not only lends credibility to the claims of war crimes being committed in occupied Iraq; they are also simply shocking. This is an enormous number of deaths of men, women and children in one country. However, the world does not even want t! o know about what is surely the greatest crime in human history and which is continuing unabated? One must wonder whether Human race has lost all sense of its shared humanity. This Muslim holocaust has been in the making for long time…

Oct. toll at 78 for U.S. troops in Iraq
CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer
…Three U.S. Marines were killed, making October the deadliest month for American forces this year. In Washington, President Bush met with his top military and security advisers to study new tactics to curb the staggering violence in Iraq, where more than 3 1/2 years of war have now taken more American lives — at least 2,791 — than the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center. The deaths of the Marines raised the October death ! toll for American troops to 78, surpassing the year’s previous high figure of 76 in April. With more than a week left in the month, October is on course to be the deadliest month for American service members in two years…

Israel admits using phosphorus bombs during war in Lebanon
Meron Rappaport, Haaretz Correspondent
Israel has acknowledged for the first time that it attacked Hezbollah targets during the second Lebanon war with phosphorus shells. White phosphorus causes very painful and often lethal chemical burns to those hit by it, and until recently Israel maintained that it only uses such bombs to mark targets or territory. The announcement that the Israel Defense Forces had used phosphorus bombs in the war in Lebanon was made by Minister Jacob Edery, in charge of government-Knesset relations. He had been queried on the matter by MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz-Yahad). “The IDF holds phosphorus munitions in different forms,” Edery said. “The IDF made use of phosphorous shells during the war against Hezbollah in attacks against military targets in open ground.”…

North Korea’s Nuclear Test
Stephen Gowans
There were immediate reasons, and more distant causes, that compelled north Korea to undertake a nuclear test earlier this month. All of them, I think, are related to the need of north Korea to deter the United States from carrying out its threats of war. According to the DPRK foreign ministry, the test was conducted to protect north Korea’s “sovereignty and right to existence from the daily increasing danger of war from the United States.” Washington says it has no inten! tion of attacking or invading north Korea, so north Korea’s claim that it is simply reacting to US threats and intimidation is dismissed as pure paranoia, but anyone who claims north Korea isn’t being threatened either isn’t paying attention or is playing at propaganda…
