AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT
The Defense Committee for President Saddam Hussein, his Comrades and all detainees. English/ Arabic
To the great people of Iraq, to the zealous Arabs and the good people of the world: One day after another, the agenda of the so-called Criminal Court is being exposed. The latest sessions of the proceedings on the 20th of September 2006, when the Defense Council withdrew from the courtroom, and the following proceedings of the 25th and the 26th of Sept. of the so-called Anfal case, have all ! proved that this trial is a farce and that is a kind of victorious justice to take political revenge against the legitimate leader of Iraq – President Saddam Hussein and his comrades. The trial has nothing tp do with law or with seeking justice, a value which is being crushed down by the invading foreign boots. The position of the defense, and those who are defending justice and supporting fairness, turned out to be true and that this court is very far from law or judicial due process, and that is an instrument in the hands of the politicians and occupiers of Iraq designed to quench the thirst for revenge against the President, his comrades and the Iraqi people…

Another Hideous US Crime against Humanity in Iraq
alquds alarabi ::
The US forces of occupation have added yet another massacre of civilians to its war criminal record in Iraq, when it executed a family of eight amongst which four women; two of which were pregnant, and arrested two other family members in the city of Baquba north east of Baghdad, reports a London based newspaper. Independent witnesses confirm the Alquds own reporting of an attack launched at 4am by US forces supported by helicopter gunship agains! t the family residence of Mr Jasim Mohammed Mehdi, which is situated in the Alkatoon district, north west of Baquba…

Where are the voices?
The shame of silence in the face of Israeli and US crimes
Paul J. Balles*
Where are the voices of moral righteousness that the world has always depended upon to rein in the evil forces of conquering warlords? The teachers and professors – why are they silent? The virtuous – the clergy and elders of church and mosque and synagogue – who covered their mouths with duct tape and broke their pens and keyboards? In an earlier time those voices rang out louder than anthems for the dead. They br! ought the public who look for their guidance and counsel into the streets. The places of worship and the places of learning provided pulpits and podiums from which men and women of honour and integrity taught and guided the rest of us…

ATTORNEYS FOR GUANTANAMO DETAINEES COULD BE DETAINED AS ENEMY COMBATANTS UNDER NEW LEGISLATION
Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR)
On September 26, 2006, attorneys for the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) determined that what appears to be the final version of the Military Commissions Act of 2006 could allow the government to detain the attorneys themselves as ‘enemy combatants.’ CCR Legal Director Bill Goodman said: “This ominously broad definition of enemy combatants would mean that almost anyone who a! ctively opposes the President or the government could be locked up indefinitely. This bill makes a mockery of the rule of law.” The current version of the Military Commissions redefines an “unlawful enemy combatant” (UEC) so broadly that it could include anyone who organizes a march against the war in Iraq…

GI Special 4I28: Sadistic Freaks In Command – September 28, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
Out here in South Baghdad, also known as the “Red Zone,” soldiers die daily. Many are working 16-plus hour days, odd shifts, and pulling details in between.
How fair is it to impose upon a soldier the risk of getting flagged when he is doing dangerous work, being ripped away from his family for 12 or more consecutive months?
The climate here is extremely hot and tiring. It is not possible to get a beneficial workout when you risk becoming a heat casualty. Even the coolest part of the day, 5 a.m., is almost 90 degrees. Some soldiers work nights and cannot get up at that hour to conduct PT.
To run here is impossible, unless you want to sprain your ankle or break your leg. There are no paved or smooth runways. There is nothing but hard, bumpy rock everywhere, which can be hazardous even to walk around.

Human Hell and the Demons of War
Manuel Valenzuela
The pages of history, those monuments to humankind’s brief rule over the planet, are replete with violence, death and destruction. Indeed, it can be argued successfully that war, genocide, ethnic cleansing and human violence against each other have defined humanity’s tumultuous existence on Earth. We are inseparable from death and destruction, suffering and violence. Turning the pages of the little we know of our own past, one thing becomes quite apparent: Throug! hout time, in all corners of the world, mankind has lived side by side with war, destruction and death. We have defined our existence through the self-inflicted violence we unleash upon ourselves. What is it about the human condition that espouses in us a propensity to grossly annihilate ourselves, inflicting horrendous misery onto our kind?…

The Good News about Lying to Americans
Ahmed Amr, www.dissidentvoice.org
… In Washington, every Israeli war crime is anointed as a battle for survival. While the Israelis systematically torment the citizens of the West Bank and Gaza, the Bush administration promotes a farcical non-existent “peace process” designed to give Tel Aviv additional space to confiscate more holy land from the indigenous population of Palestine. Haditha, Abu Ghraib, Tel Afar, Jenin, Jabaliya, Bint Jbeil, Fallujah, Qana — every Middle! Eastern Guernica is made to appear as legitimate and inevitable “collateral damage” inflicted by well-meaning Israelis and Americans in service to the cause of world peace. After wittingly or unwittingly training death squads and igniting sectarian mayhem in Iraq, Bush insists that his $300 billion quagmire is a quest for promoting democracy in the region and enhancing the security of the American people…

Observations on death tolls
David Edwards and David Cromwell
…There is an echo here of the treatment given the October 2004 Lancet report that found 100,000 excess Iraqi civilian deaths since the 2003 invasion. This was dismissed at the time and has generally been ignored ever since, even though earlier mortality studies in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the same lead author, Les Roberts, and using the same methodology, were cited by the likes of Tony Blair and Colin Powell. Last February, Roberts returned! to the subject of Iraq, this time estimating that the civilian death toll there could have reached 200,000-300,000. Having examined the media’s preferred study, produced by the Iraq Body Count (IBC) website – which puts the number of civilian deaths, based on reports by the media, at 43,000-48,000 – Roberts and colleagues found that “it cannot be more than 20 per cent complete”…

Let’s talk about those bodies in Baghdad.
Born at the Crest of the Empire
The bodies found around Baghdad have become so ubiquitous, blind folded, hands tied, signs of torture, that their reality is no longer really discussed. There were 60 such bodies found in this state just in Baghdad, just on Thursday. That these are sectarian killings often goes as an assumed fact, but do you ever hear much about the torture? From anecdotal reports, a power drill to the “joints” (knees) or hands seems to be the primary means! of torture. (A hammer and nail occasionally substituting.) But recently there has been a rise in the reports of acid being used as a slow torture item. At the endm the victims are then shot in the back of the head. I mention the disturbing details to make a point. Rarely in any article will you see it discussed why they’re inflicting these horrors on bound, blindfolded, defenseless captives…

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Thursday, 28 September 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice
…In a dispatch posted at 4:50pm Makkah time Thursday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that on Thursday morning, US troops raided a large number of elementary schools in parts of Baghdad where Resistance activity is particularly pronounced and abducted school children whose relatives are believed to be involved in the Iraqi Resistance. The correspond! ent for Mafkarat al-Islam, who was covering the start of the school year, reported that according to the puppet “Iraqi Ministry of Education” about 51 percent of the children who showed up for school were Sunni. US troops for their part, greeted the new school year in their own way, raiding more than 15 elementary schools in Baghdad. The director of one of the primary schools told the correspondent that the Americans stormed into the schools located in the Sunni areas where the Resistance is particularly active…

US General: Suicide attacks in Iraq all time high
Paul Schemm
A man drove a minibus packed with explosives into an army post in northeast Baghdad on Thursday, killing two soldiers in a trend of attacks US forces say is at an all time high. Another 11 soldiers and a civilian in the mostly Shiite Shaab neighborhood were wounded in the blast, which sent up a massive plume of smoke visible across the city. While suicide attacks have always been a feature of Iraq’s violence, US military spokesman Major General William! Caldwell described them Wednesday as being at an all time high, with half of them targeting security forces…

THE “LIBERATION” GOES ON ANOTHER IRAQI FAMILY MASSACRED BY US TROOPS IN BAQOUBA
Palestinian Pundit
American troops killed eight people — four of them women — in Baqouba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad. Outside the pockmarked house, which relatives said belonged to Mohammed Jassim, bullet casings littered the ground and blood stained the sand. Family members cried and consoled one another as the bodies of the women were taken away. “This is an ugly criminal act by the U.S. soldiers against Iraqi citizens,” Manal Ja! ssim, who lost her parents and other relatives in the attack, told Associated Press Television News. Iraq’s major Sunni clerical organization, the Association of Muslim Scholars, condemned the raid as a “terrorist massacre.” AS ALWAYS, THE PUPPET GOVERNMENT OF MALIKI AND TALABANI DID NOT SAY A WORD ABOUT THIS MASSACRE, REGISTER ANY PROTEST OR DEMAND ANY INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION…

Twilight Struggle: Finally Standing Up as the Republic Crashes Down
Chris Floyd
So the New York Times has finally roused itself and laid out the straight facts about the presidential tyranny that has been erected around the pathetic figure of George W. Bush: Rushing Off a Cliff. The Times is to be lauded for this eloquent and powerful depiction of our degraded political state, and you should read it in full. But a few vital points must mitigate our praise of this otherwise remarkable editorial. First, and most i! mportantly: it comes very, very late in the game – perhaps too late. All of the tyrannical powers enumerated by the editorial were claimed – and put into practice – by Bush and Cheney five years ago. I began writing columns about these very claims in October 2001…

US Congress legalizes torture and indefinite detention
World Socialist Web Site Editorial Board
The legislation adopted by the House of Representatives Wednesday and the Senate Thursday, legalizing the Bush administration’s policy of torture and indefinite detention without trial, as well as kangaroo-court procedures for Guantánamo detainees, marks a watershed for the United States. For the first time in American history, Congress and the White House have agreed to set aside the provisions of the Constitution and! the Bill of Rights and formally adopt methods traditionally identified with police states. This bill is the outcome of a protracted process of decay of American democracy, which has accompanied the immense growth in social inequality and reached a turning point in the stolen election of 2000…

Iraq at the Gates of Hell
George Bush’s Iraq in 21 Questions
Tom Engelhardt
Recently, in one of many speeches melding his Global War on Terror and his war in Iraq, George W. Bush said, “Victory in Iraq will be difficult and it will require more sacrifice. The fighting there can be as fierce as it was at Omaha Beach or Guadalcanal. And victory is as important as it was in those earlier battles. Victory in Iraq will result in a democracy that is a friend of America and an ally in the war on terror. Vict! ory in Iraq will be a crushing defeat for our enemies, who have staked so much on the battle there. Victory in Iraq will honor the sacrifice of the brave Americans who have given their lives. And victory in Iraq would be a powerful triumph in the ideological struggle of the 21st century.” Over three years after the 2003 invasion, it’s not unreasonable to speak of George Bush’s Iraq…

Lift Your Head
Cindy Sheehan, t r u t h o u t | Perspective
Above are recent headlines which show that North Americans, citizens of the USA, are getting fed up with bowing their heads to the criminals du jour who inhabit our White House. It has always been our birthright and absolute imperative to peacefully protest our government and to hold them accountable to represent us the way that we want to be represented. Through the Clinton years, when we thought we were peaceful and apparently prosperous, we were lulle! d into a comfortable complacency. Since 9/11, we have been bullied into being fearful of the boogeyman and our now-vindicated toiletry items that can rejoin us in airplane cabin. Those of us who spoke out against George and his war were marginalized and demonized. Phil Donahue was fired for being too outspoken, Mrs. Joe Wilson was outed, General Eric Shinseki was forced to retire, vile accusations were leveled against weapons inspectors who dared to say that Saddam had none, etc., etc. Even if we disagreed with the impending invasion, many of us were terrified to say anything lest we be reduced to “focus groups.”…

How did we sink so low in just 6 years?
Mike Whitney
How did things get this bad? The “Military Commissions Act” which passed the Republican-led Congress yesterday is a bigger blow to the Constitution and our core values than any piece of legislation in our 200 year history. It is a 100 times worse than Bin Laden’s crimes on 9-11. In a 253 to 168 “party-line” vote, the congress repealed habeas corpus and approved the torturing of prisoners in American custody. It is breathtaking assault on human rights and pers! onal liberty and puts the United States well-outside the community of civilized nations. It will ultimately be up to the Supreme Court to decide whether to strike down this “affront to democracy” or let the law stand as is…

Risk of Misreading US-Iran Dispute
Ramzy Baroud
…This must not mean that Iran’s intentions are most unadulterated either; the temporary alliance Iran had reached with the US, vowing to assist or at least not upset its military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, are all characteristic of a country with pure political and strategic attitude, not necessary to guarantee universal justice, but primarily to advance its own interests. It is vital that the Iran-US row, regardless of its future direction or level of esc! alation, be understood for what it really is: a clash of interests between a superpower no longer so fearsome, and an aspiring regional power with clear objectives and aims. It’s neither about America’s burning desire to safeguard democracy and the human race from mad Iranian mullahs, nor is it exactly about Iran’s quest for a just world. Further misinterpretation of this topic shall yield even more erroneous outcomes, of horror scenarios, of smoking guns, and eventually of one more tragic “case for war.”…

The Other “N” Word: Israeli Nukes
The Truth Will Set You Free
Despite all the attention given to Iran’s nuclear program, the underside of that discourse is Israel’s nuclear weapons. While Bush adroitly decries the threat of non-existent ‘nookular weapons’ in the hands of so-called ‘Islamic terrorists’, he can’t manage to pronounce the word in the context of Israel’s REAL and MASSIVE stockpile of nuclear weapons. The subject receives scant attention in diplomatic circles and the media. At Checkpoints in Baghdad, Disguise Is a Lifesaving Ritual
Sudarsan Raghavan, Washington Post Foreign Service
Every time he drove, he feared this moment. Now, it was too late. As Omar Adil Ahmed neared the checkpoint, he recalled, he saw armed men dressed in black ordering passengers out of a minivan and checking their identity cards. Some were told to get back into the van. Others were taken to a Shiite mosque across the street. The gunmen clutched Glock pistols, normally used by the Iraqi police. Ahmed, 30, was! a Sunni Muslim. And he was in Shaab, a volatile, Shiite Muslim-dominated neighborhood. Questions raced through his mind: Was the mosque a base for a Shiite militia? Were the men members of a Shiite death squad? So Ahmed set in motion a ritual that many Sunnis across a divided Baghdad now practice. He pushed in a cassette tape with Shiite religious songs and turned up the volume. He wrapped a piece of green cloth that he brought from the Imam Ali shrine in Najaf, one of Shiite Islam’s holiest sites, around his gearshift…

Weekly Report: On Israeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory No. 38/2006 – 21 – 27 September 2006
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
This report coincides with the 6th anniversary of the eruption of the al-Aqsa Intifada, which broke out following the former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s provocative visit to al-Aqsa Mosque (the Holy Sanctuary) in occupied Jerusalem. Over the last 6 years, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have perpetrated grave breaches of international la! w, including war crimes, against Palestinian civilians, in a manner unprecedented since 1967. The 6th year of the Intifada witnessed an increasing escalation in Israeli war crimes as the international community remained silent and the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 failed to meet their obligations to ensure respect for the Convention in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) and provide protection for Palestinian civilians. The international silence has served to encourage the Israeli government and its occupation forces to perpetrate more war crimes with impunity against Palestinian civilians. Over the last 12 months, IOF have stepped up illegal operations in the OPT, especially in the Gaza Strip. The number of Palestinian civilians killed by IOF in the Gaza Strip in the second half of the year reminds of the numbers of civilians killed by IOF in the West Bank during the Operation Defensive Shield in spring 2002…

A Soul Defying, Tacit Approval of Torture: How Did We Come to This?
Phil Rockstroh, www.dissidentvoice.org
The pathology of American culture is as ubiquitous as its strip mall ugliness. It is abundantly evident in almost every aspect of contemporary life. From the predatory (to the point of psychopathic) practices of its morally scurvy pirates at the helm of the corporate/governmental ship of state, down to the pandemic enervation and proliferate anomie of its galley slaves languishing in their soulless cubicles ! — from the genitalia-devoid mascots at Disney World to the genitalia-obsessed torturers of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo — the soul-sickness spreads before us like George W. Bush’s taunting, executioner’s smirk. Ronnie Laing’s profound dictum leaves us confronting many poignant questions regarding the true nature of the psychic lives of us so-called ordinary citizens of The United States of America and our ability to function within this corrupt and crumbling empire. In short, is it sane to be able to adapt to an insane culture?…

Hand-in-hand with his threat warnings, Bush keeps telling us how his War on Terror has made us so much safer, bragging that there hasn’t been a terrorist attack in the United States in the five years since the one of September 11, 2001. Marvelous. There wasn’t a terrorist attack in the United States in the five years before that day either. But thanks to the War on Terror — particularly the ! bombing, invasion, occupation, and torture of Afghanistan and Iraq — numerous new anti-American terrorists have been created since that historic day. The latest confirmation of this, if any more were needed, is the recently leaked National Intelligence Estimate conclusion that “the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and … the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.”…

Poets for Palestine
Remi Kanazi
Al Jisser is accepting submissions for its upcoming book: Poets for Palestine. The concept of this book was inspired by two spoken word shows held at The Bridge art gallery in Manhattan. The first show, the Poetic Injustice Poetry Show, took place in conjunction with the display of the Made in Palestine art exhibition. Excited by the intensity and effectiveness of spoken word, The Bridge brought back the Poetic Injustice Poetry Show for a second n! ight. It was held during an equally moving exhibit, Three Arab Painters in New York. Al Jisser hopes to capture the energy of these two nights in Poets for Palestine, invigorating those within the Arab community as well as individuals interested in the plight of Palestinians.
Our goal is to bring together poets, spoken word artists, hip hop artists, Palestinians, Arabs, Jews, Americans and all those who choose to raise their voice for humanity and justice. In addition to its written works, Poets for Palestine will feature art created by Palestinians artists from the Occupied Territories and throughout the world…
