The Association of Muslim Scholars rejects Talabani’s US long-presence demand
Roads to Iraq
Iraqi Sunni Scholars Council criticized President Jalal Talabani’s “strange demand” asking for American forces long-term presence in the country. The following is the statement: Statement No. 320. Thank God, prayer and peace be upon the Messenger of God. Current Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said in an interview with The Washington Post published Monday that he wants the American military presence in Iraq for a lon! g term, He emphasized that his country would need two air bases to prevent what he described foreign interventions, Talabani in his statement to the Washington Post newspaper claims that the Sunni Arabs support the long term American military presence in Iraq, He stressed that the Sunni Arabs in some places want the Americans to stay, adding that they believe now that the threat comes particularly from Iran. The Association of Muslim Scholars condemns such irresponsible statements and issue the following point : First: that such a request is nothing more than an American desire provided by Mr. Talabani; because the Iranian intervention at its peak today even with the presence of 140 thousand American fighters, How Mr. Talabani wants to convince us that 10 thousand fighters at the two air bases could prevent any intervention?…

The price of oil, again
Xymphora
I predicted before the last American Presidential election that Bush would have to reduce the price of gasoline or he would lose. He didn’t force the price of gasoline down and, of course, he did lose. He ‘won’ only because of electoral crookedness (which appears to be the strategy for the upcoming election cycle in November). There is only so far that you can rig the computer voting machines before everybody notices and the hue and cry for reform removes the crooked machines pe! rmanently, thus making it difficult for Giuliani to win the next Presidential election, so Rove has apparently decided it will be necessary to temporarily reduce the price of gas until the elections are over. We are seeing this now at the pumps (stock up before November!). You might think this would be tricky to do, but the way that commodities are priced makes it surprisingly easy to manipulate the price of gas. Undernews quotes the goldbug site Le Metropole Cafe…

…In a dispatch posted at 3:15pm Makkah time Tuesday, afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation troops abducted an elderly Iraqi lady in Hit, about 170km northwest of Baghdad. The Americans intend to hold the woman hostage until her only grandson surrenders to the occupation troops. The Hit correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that! American occupation soldiers arrested al-Hajjah Zakkiyah, 70, on Monday in her home in the al-Jam’iyah neighborhood of central Hit in order to put pressure on her grandson to turn himself in to the invader troops who accuse him of planting bombs in the path of American columns…

Leaked NIE Report: More Fake Terrorism, No Matter the Neolib Faction Ruling Congress Come November 7
Kurt Nimmo
After the Democrats take back the House and the Senate, do you think anything will change? Democrats are onboard with the neocon phony war on terrorism, the occupation of Iraq, the re-invasion of Afghanistan—now that the Taliban are resurgent, not that they ever went away, as resistance to occupation is to be expected, as we can expect the sun to come up tomorrow—and the dismantlement of the Constitutio! n, the Bill of Rights, and the construction of a police state at home. Democrats will change none of this. Democrats simply represent a new management team…

Remembering Gaza beach – how it all started
The Truth Will Set You Free
A heart-wrenching, blood-drenched reminder of what our Zionist-controlled mainstream media wants you to forever forget – how this whole bloody fiasco started in Gaza. Israelis deliberately fired several rounds of shells onto a crowded beach ripping to pieces this 12 year old girl’s entire family before her very eyes. But, instead of this incident and many more in between, our Zionist controlled media inserts their celebrated ! Shalit “kidnapping” following EVERY new grisly murder of Palestinian civilians by bloodthirsty Israelis, in order to “remind” readers how it allegedly all started. They even include Israel’s ‘cause celebre’ in photo captions to justify images of dead children – killed by Israel’s war machine, and paid for by our tax dollars…

Tomgram: Michael Klare, Why Oil Prices Are Falling
Tom Engelhardt & Michael Klare
The price of crude oil, which this summer threatened to top $80 a barrel, briefly dipped under $60 for the first time in six months yesterday, a 23% decline from July highs. In the Midwest, where gas not long ago had soared to $3 at the pump, it now averages, according to the Energy Department, a nationwide low of $2.20 a gallon ($1.89 at one Jackson, Missouri gas station). At the same time, another set of figures rose precipitousl! y. According to a recent Gallup Poll, 42% of Americans “agreed with the statement that the Bush administration ‘deliberately manipulated the price of gasoline so that it would decrease before this fall’s elections.’”..

US Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada is facing an eight-year term in military prison for just doing his duty: serving our country and protecting the Constitution. The charges against Lieutenant Watada are conduct unbecoming an officer, missing movement, and contempt toward President Bush. GI Special 4I26: Rebuilding The GI Movement – September 26, 2006
Thomas F. Barton
Over thirty years after the U.S. lost the war in Indochina, my generation is coming to know the history of the GI resistance in Vietnam.
As documented by David Cortright’s “Soldiers in Revolt”, first published in 1975, and David Ziegler’s 2005 documentary film “Sir No Sir”, the movement of soldiers and sailors against the occupation of Vietnam was pivotal in ending U.S. Imperialist aggression against the Vietnamese people.
The GI Movement was also instrumental in advancing reforms to the military command structure.

Amnesty International is greatly concerned at the sharp increase in executions carried out by the Iraqi authorities since the beginning of September 2006. To Amnesty International’s knowledge these were the first executions to be carried out in the Kurdish region since 1992. The Two Faces of Occupation
Ali Al-Sarraf
…It is crystal clear that the war waged by the staff of the sectarian militias government, with all its gangs and armed groups, is not a war on the former regime’s elements; it is a war on Iraq as an independent, united state; on its national interests; on acquiring any strategic role in the regional balance of powers and its future economic relations. All of that is done in order to make it subordinate to the aspirations of the purist empire. Al-Sistani, Al-Asfahani, A! l-Shahrastani, and the like cannot see Iraq as an independent, self-established entity, and they sign the co-operation agreements with Iran, only to turn Iraq into a Persian barn under the Ayatollahs’ yoke. In fact, those Ayatollahs make use of Islam as a cover for their expansionist projects. The Iranian project in Iraq is no better than the American one; anyway, it is an accomplice in the same massacres. They are both in conflict with each other, and bite at the corpse of this country, each on its own account. But it is likely that they will reach a partnership agreement to divide the shares in Iraq, following the pattern of what the militia parties are doing with the pocket money given by the occupation…

The five pillars of the U.S. military-industrial complex
Rodrigue Tremblay, Online Journal Guest Writer
In the 1920s, President Calvin Coolidge said, “the business of America is business.” Nowadays, it can be said that the arms industry and permanent war have become a big part of American business, as the offshoot of a well-entrenched military-industrial complex. This is a development that previous American men of vision, men like President George Washington and President Dwight Eisenhower, have warned against as! being intrinsically inimical to democracy and liberty. However, the current Bush-Cheney administration is not afraid of such a development; its principal members are part of it and are instead very busy promoting it. Wars, especially modern electronic wars, are very murderous, but they are also synonymous with big cost-plus contracts, big profits and big employment for those who produce the required military gear. Wars are the paradise of profiteers…

Krauthammer, Iran, and the End Days
Kurt Nimmo
Charles Krauthammer, guiding light of the neocon faction, predicts shock and awe waged against Iran in his latest op-ed in the CIA’s favorite newspaper, the Washington Post. First, Krauthammer lays out the cost of this action—astronomical gas prices, precipitating a vicious recession, attacks on occupation forces and the installed government in Iraq. Next, he basically tells us all of this is necessary because “there is the larger danger of permitting nuclear weapons! to be acquired by religious fanatics seized with an eschatological belief in the imminent apocalypse and in their own divine duty to hasten the End of Days.” Deterrence is impossible, Krauthammer explains, because Iran revels in a “millenarian fanaticism glorying in a cult of death,” in other words, there will be no stopping these suicidal Muslims, determined to wipe both Israel and the Great Satan, the United States, off the map. ..

BLITZER: Let’s move on and talk a little bit about Iraq. A Broken, De-Humanized Military in Iraq
Dahr Jamail, t r u t h o u t | Perspective
While the deranged chicken-hawks who “lead” the US continue their efforts to wage another unprovoked war of aggression, this time against Iran, what’s left of their already overstretched military continues to be bled in Iraq. When the situation is so critical that even the corporate media is forced to report on it, you know it’s bad. Last week on the NBC Nightly News, General Barry McCaffrey, now retired, said of the current sta! te of the US military, “I think, arguably, it’s the worst readiness condition the US Army has faced since the end of Vietnam.” This isn’t a big surprise when we consider the facts that many soldiers are already into their third combat tour, frequent deployments have cut training time at home in half, and two thirds of all Army combat units are rated not ready for combat…

Challenging the Power of the Jewish Lobby: What Should Be Done?
James Petras, Axis of Logic
A number of writers have recently written critical articles or reviews about the power of the pro-Israel or Jewish Lobby and its influence on US policy in the Middle East. Most of these writings emphasize the power of the lobby over Congress, the two major parties (especially the Democrats) and the Executive branch. Some even describe the pro-Israel lobbies and the allied Jewish federations, the numerous propaganda insti! tutes described as ‘think tanks’, publications as well as their influence or control over the mass media, from Hollywood, the print media, television to corporate “public” radio. However these critics and analysts paint themselves into a corner, attributing to the Jewish lobby so much power as to virtually incapacitate any effort to counter its influence and change the direction of US policy. The image of a near-omniscient and omnipotent Jewish lobby overlooks its vulnerability and significant issues around which an opposition or counter-hegemonic movement can be organized in the United States…
