EFFECTS OF DEPLETED URANIUM
De Anna MySpace Blog
Depleted uranium, known as DU, is a highly dense metal that is the byproduct of the process during which fissionable uranium used to manufacture nuclear bombs and reactor fuel is separated from natural uranium. DU remains radioactive for about 4.5 billion years. This brief presentation is aimed at conveying to the primarily Indian participants of the Conference the fateful and disastrous consequences of the indiscriminate use of depleted and non D! U munitions on the people of the west, central and south Asian regions, women, children , men , animals, plant and animal life now and in the future, in gross violation of international law, the Hague convention and domestic US military law…

No innocent bystanders in America
Mickey Z.
The next time you’re feeling “free,” see how far you can walk without being legally compelled to stop…to let cars drive past. The light turns red and viola: you are no longer free to continue walking because in America, the car culture rules. This essentially invisible totalitarian salvo was recently complicated when a big white SUV crept up into the crosswalk, making it virtually hopeless for yours truly to cross the damn street even when the light changed to green. ! I fixed my gaze on the mechanized monster before me and immediately saw all that is wrong with America…

Kidnapped in Gaza: Chaos as a Strategy
Ramzy Baroud
Two Fox News journalists, Steve Cantani and Olas Wing were released by their Palestinian kidnappers in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, August 27. Just one day earlier, two Reuters’ cameramen were seriously wounded in an apparently deliberate Israeli strike on their clearly marked vehicle, according to news reports. The names of the two wounded cameramen, however, as well as their story went largely unreported. Their plight seemed inconsequential compared to that of th! e Fox News journalists. Video recordings released earlier by the kidnappers of Cantani and Wing revealed undeniable similarities between their scandalous style – wrecking with ignorance and artlessness – and that of Iraqi groups, notorious for their gory beheadings and other acts of savagery…

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Wednesday, 6 September 2006.
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice
In a dispatch posted at 9:30pm Makkah time Wednesday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation forces arrested a mentally deranged Iraqi man known locally as Farhan al-Khabil (”Crazy Farhan”) who lives in ar-Ramadi on Wednesday afternoon and then claimed that he had confessed to being a local “terrorist commander” in Iraq. The ar-Ramadi corresp! ondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the Americans arrested Farhan who is widely known as mentally ill and who is frequently seen wandering around in tattered clothes, playing with children, and eating handouts from local people. Witnesses said that the Americans beat him up, broke his nose and ripped his clothes off in the street. They then arrested him and led him off to their base west of the city. Two hours later, the correspondent reported, the Americans issued a communiqué in which they announced that they had arrested one of the “leaders of ‘terror’ in the city” and that he had confessed to have personally carried out killings and bombings in ar-Ramadi. The American announcement provoked widespread derision and laughter among city residents…

‘Taliban taking over’
Sanjay Suri
The Taliban have regained control over the southern half of Afghanistan and their front line is advancing daily, a group closely monitoring the Afghan situation said in a report this week. The report on the reconstruction of Afghanistan marking the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US is based on extensive field research in the critical provinces of Helmand, Kandahar, Herat and Nangarhar. “The Taliban front line now cuts halfway through the country, enco! mpassing all of the southern provinces,” says a report by the Senlis Council, an international policy think-tank with offices in Kabul, London, Paris and Brussels…

Bush admits the CIA runs secret prisons
DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer
President Bush on Wednesday acknowledged for the first time that the CIA runs secret prisons overseas and said tough interrogation forced terrorist leaders to reveal plots to attack the United States and its allies. Bush said 14 suspects — including the mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks and architects of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole and the U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania — had been turned over to the Defense Departmen! t and moved to the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for trial…

White House Targets Conspiracy Theorists As Terrorist Recruiters
‘Strategy for winning the war on terror’ says world contaminated, corrupted by misinformation
Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com
A document cited by President Bush in his recent speech at the Capital Hilton Hotel on how to ‘win the war on terror’ cites conspiracies as one of the wellsprings of terrorism and threatens to “address” and “diminish” the problems they are causing the government in fulfilling their agenda. On Tuesday Bush refe! rred to the strategy paper as “an unclassified version of the strategy we’ve been pursuing since September the 11th, 2001,” that takes into account, “the changing nature of this enemy.” The document says that terrorism springs from “subcultures of conspiracy and misinformation,” and that “terrorists recruit more effectively from populations whose information about the world is contaminated by falsehoods and corrupted by conspiracy theories. The distortions keep alive grievances and filter out facts that would challenge popular prejudices and self-serving propaganda.”…

Deceit About Iraq: “Things Related and Not”
Walter C. Uhler
As they did during the mid-term congressional election campaign of 2002 and the presidential election campaign of 2004, President Bush, Vice President Cheney and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld are once again attempting to scare Americans into voting for Republicans in November. They certainly should, because their very political lives depend upon November’s outcome. But, what’s astounding — given their massive campaign of deceit about Iraq – is the thought ! that they still possess even an ounce of residual credibility with either the news media or the electorate. After all, Mr. Bush trumpeted false claims about Iraq’s possession of weapons of mass destruction and ties to al Qaeda, in order to lead us into an unnecessary war we are now losing…

Maliki Discusses Iraqi Cabinet Shake-Up
Solomon Moore, LATimes Staff Writer
Less than three months after finalizing Iraq’s Cabinet, Prime Minister Nouri Maliki’s Shiite Muslim alliance is discussing changes at several top ministries, including a move to replace the head of the troubled Interior Ministry, amid continuing violence reported today. The agency runs police forces that are widely believed to be infiltrated by militia members and involved with hundreds of killings by alleged death squads. “The ministries! included by the reshuffle have not been finalized yet,” Maliki said during a recent interview on an Arab satellite television channel. “The number might increase or decrease. I don’t want to state the names, but until now we have three ministries; in addition there are discussions about two other ministries. We don’t want to break into the issue before creating an agreement between the ministers’ political slates.” At least two of the ministry’s being contemplated for a leadership change, Health and Transportation, are run by supporters of the militant Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr. Political observers see those changes as a bid for even greater control of those ministries by the Sadr movement…
