Haiti Election Observer Confirms Fraud, Helps Candidate Seek Correction
A candidate in Haiti's June 25 elections has protested changes in vote counting documents with assistance from of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) member Duane Ediger. Ediger observed at one polling station whose figures were tampered with.
Savann a Woch Township council candidate Osman Bosou showed Ediger documents sent by the local elections office that had been changed to make another candidate appear to win. At the station where Ediger observed the counting, the PROP party received seven votes. On the official document "cent" (one hundred) was written in front of "sept" (seven).
Ediger and Bosou brought the evidence to regional and national officials, who are currently in the process of verifying the fraud.
Ediger reports that many more communities call for international election observers than receive them. After rerun of elections that did not go in a satisfactory manner on August 6 and runoffs to be held later this month, the country will be gearing up for the presidential race in December. Persons interested in participation in election observing or joining a delegation to Haiti later this fall should contact CPT.
