Announcement: New National Initiative on Haiti’s Environment

Konbit Pou Ayiti/KONPAY (Working Together for Haiti) is excited to announce a new initiative for Haiti’s environment. Working with representatives of existing organizations and projects from throughout Haiti’s nine geographical departments, KONPAY will hold a planning conference 23-25 September 2005 to launch a National Initiative on Haiti’s Environment.

A team of mainly Haitian organizers, agronomists, and community leaders will join together to define: (1) Environmental priorities encompassing the five main pillars of environmental work in Haiti: reforestation/tree planting, erosion control, potable water/irrigation, family level food security and alternative fuels; (2) A test project that can be executed in two sites; (3) An outreach plan to catalogue existing environmental initiatives; (4) Planning, coordination and outreach for a national initiative on the environment. Vendors for water purification, seeds and alternatives to charcoal will be invited to present at the September planning conference.

KONPAY seeks broad participation in the national initiative. International partners are being sought to contribute expertise, technical and material assistance to the initiative. KONPAY is looking for experts who would like to share their skills and knowledge, twinned parishes that would like to support a test project in their Haitian twin community, Haitian American community leaders to build a support network in the U.S. for the national initiative and contact with existing national and international groups and projects throughout Haiti.

KONPAY is committed to playing a supporting role for the process of creating a National Initiative. As opposed to influencing this plan, international partners will help to create the circumstances necessary for Haitians engaged in environmental efforts to gather together and create their own national network and strategy.
