US media continues to shortchange Iraqis – massacres are now called accidents of perception
Zaidan, The Future of Iraq
In our continuing series examining some of the glaring mistakes and biases perpetrated by US media in covering the Iraq war, we came across an interesting article which in the aftermath of the Blackwater controversy highlights the impunity and free rein US armed forces have in Iraq and how the free press in America covers for them. The article, “Knowing the enemy difficult in Iraq” by Katarina Kratovac for the Associated Press marks a turning point in what is now being referred to as armchair journalism and a failure to investigate and dig deeper for the truth. It is also yet another example of the propaganda war conducted by so-called wire agencies…

Blackwater Rising
Anwaar Hussain
literally ‘Black water’ in Urdu/Hindi languages, a term for the deep sea and hence exile, was the name of a notorious cellular jail situated in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (India). The prison was known to house many notable Indian activists during the struggle for India’s independence. In March 1868, 238 prisoners tried to escape. By April they were all caught. One committed suicide and of the remainder, British Superintendent Walker ordered 87 to be hanged. On the U.S. mainland, the Blackwater River of Florida is a 58-mile long river arising in southern Alabama and flowing through the Florida Panhandle to the Gulf of Mexico. The river enters Florida in Okaloosa County and flows through Santa Rosa County to Blackwater Bay, an arm of Pensacola Bay. The river passes through Blackwater River State Park. There is yet another blackwater river in North Carolina that goes by the name of White Oak River. The White Oak River is located in North Carolina’s outer coastal plain province in Carteret, Jones, and Onslow Counties. Blackwater Shootings “Murder,” Iraq Says
www.truthout.org/docs_2006/100807D.shtml
James Glanz and Alissa J. Rubin report for The New York Times, “The Iraqi prime minister’s office said Sunday that the government’s investigation had determined that Blackwater USA private security guards who shot Iraqi civilians three weeks ago in a Baghdad square sprayed gunfire in nearly every direction, committed ‘deliberate murder’ and should be punished accordingly.”

Iraq says Blackwater shootings killed 17 07 Oct 2007 An official Iraqi investigation into a deadly shooting involving Blackwater USA mercenaries raised the number of Iraqis killed to 17 and found the gunfire was unwarranted, the government said Sunday. Hillary’s Blackwater Connection
Posted: 07 Oct 2007 04:51 PM CDT
by R.J. Eskow
A lot of negative things have been written in the blogosphere about pollster Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton’s increasingly-powerful advisor. Penn’s critics have focused on his firm’s union-busting work. They’ve also attacked his insistence on promoting a strategy of so-called “centrism,” even as supposedly “centrist” policy positions – especially regarding Iraq – become increasingly unpopular. And now we learn that the PR firm he runs, Burson-Marsteller, has been hired to repair Blackwater’s reputation.

State Dept. ignored Blackwater warnings —Diplomats had raised concerns about guards’ endangering of Iraqi civilians, but the complaints got little attention. 07 Oct 2007 The State Department, which is facing growing criticism of its policy on private security contractors, overlooked repeated warnings from U.S. diplomats in the field that mercenaries were endangering Iraqi civilians and undermining U.S. efforts to win support from the population, according to current and former U.S. officials. Ever since the mercenaries were granted immunity from Iraqi courts in June 2004 by the U.S.-led occupation authority, diplomats have cautioned that the decision to do so was “a bomb that could go off at any time,” said one former U.S. official.

Umm Sajjad said the office of Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdul Mehdi, for whom her husband was working when he died, was handling the case and told her that they had rejected the proposed sum as too low. State Department documents say that Blackwater and the U.S. State Department had agreed that $15,000 was a fair amount.

I survived Blackwater —A former U.S. official received the security company’s services — and witnessed its disregard for Iraqi lives. By Janessa Gans 06 Oct 2007 When the Iraqi government last month demanded the expulsion of Blackwater USA, the private security firm, I had one reaction: It’s about time… The poor Iraqi driver frantically searched for a means of escape, but there was none. So the lead Blackwater vehicle smashed heedlessly into the car, pushing it into the barrier. We zoomed by too quickly to notice if anyone was hurt. Until that point I had never mentioned anything to my drivers about their tactics, but this time I could not contain myself. “Where do you all expect them to go?” I shrieked. “It was an old guy and a family, for goodness’ sake. Was it necessary for them to destroy their poor old car?”

The Bush administration’s ties to Blackwater
Blamed in the deaths of Iraqi civilians, the private security firm has long ties to the White House and prominent Republicans, including Ken Starr.

When Blackwater contractors guarding a U.S. State Department convoy allegedly killed 11 unarmed Iraqi civilians on Sept. 16, it was only the latest in a series of controversial shooting incidents associated with the private security firm. Blackwater has a reputation for being quick on the draw. Since 2005, the North Carolina-based company, which has about 1,000 contractors in Iraq, has reported 195 “escalation of force incidents”; in 163 of those cases Blackwater guns fired first. According to the New York Times, Blackwater guards were twice as likely as employees of two other firms protecting State Department personnel in Iraq to be involved in shooting incidents…

Psychopathic, Mass-murdering, Sons-of-Bitches.
Smoking Mirrors
I have been watching this Blackwater saga unfold. I’ve seen the youtube videos of these sub-human psychopaths gunning people down on the highway; picking off whoever happened to be walking down the road, shooting into cars at random on the highway- generally, indiscriminately murdering whoever was in their path. I have followed the testimony of eyewitnesses and have measured the magnitude of recorded assaults against the slim possibility that this is all a put-up job against beautiful people making the world safe for democracy. I have seen the large percentage of Blackwater personnel who were charged and discharged for all manner of violations and I have come to the inescapable conclusion that they are psychopathic, mass murdering sonsofbitches…

The State Dept.’s Murderous Guardians
Robert Scheer

How did it come to be that the ostensibly best-educated and most refined representatives of the United States in Iraq are guarded by gun-toting mercenaries who kill innocent civilians? More urgently, why did State Department employees and their bosses in Washington tolerate—and pay to conceal—the wanton murder conducted on their watch? That’s the real scandal of the more than $832 million the U.S. State Department paid Blackwater, investigated this week by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, headed by Henry Waxman (D-Calif.). The issue is not simply that of the Blackwater forces’ horrid behavior but, more important, why the mayhem they unleashed upon innocent Iraqis was approved and covered up by the Bush administration…

Blackwater mercenaries’ record of murder in Iraq
Kate Randall, WSWS
In the aftermath of the bloody shooting incident in Baghdad on September 16 involving hired guards of Blackwater USA, more information is coming to light about the operations of this and similar mercenary outfits in Iraq. The Iraqi Interior Ministry contends that as many as 20 Iraqis were killed and several dozens wounded in the massacre, and that the security contractors’ actions were unprovoked. To date, Blackwater has released no account of the incident, and has maintained that its guards fired in self-defense. New details of the September 16 shootings and other violent incidents involving Blackwater demonstrate that the security firm has operated with impunity in Baghdad and other areas of Iraq, firing on unarmed civilians without provocation. US State Department reports, which likely underestimate violent incidents involving Blackwater, show that since the beginning of the year Blackwater guards have been deployed on 1,873 missions and have discharged weapons in the course of 56 of these…
