Palin to Dump McCain From GOP Ticket By R J Shulman 20 Sep 2008
Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin announced today that she has asked top GOP officials to fire John McCain as the GOP presidential candidate. “He has served his country well,” Palin told a cheering overflow crowd in this southwestern Indiana city, “but he is starting to drag down my numbers, so he’ll have to go. To make sure he’s gone,” she said, “I’ll offer one hundred and fifty dollars to the first person to shoot him and bring me his cut off right hand — just kidding. I don’t need to see the hand, a faxed picture will do.” (Satire!)

ABC: New Doubts Over Palin’s Troopergate Claims —Internal Government Document Contradicts Sarah Palin, Campaign 19 Sep 2008
An internal government document obtained by ABC News appears to contradict Sarah Palin’s most recent explanation for why she fired her public safety chief, the move which prompted the now-contested state probe into “Troopergate.” Fighting back against allegations she may have fired her then-Public Safety Commissioner, Walt Monegan, for refusing to go along with a personal vendetta, Palin on Monday argued in a legal filing that she fired Monegan because he had a “rogue mentality” and was bucking her administration’s directives. “The last straw,” her lawyer argued, came when he planned a trip to Washington, D.C., to seek federal funds for an aggressive anti-sexual-violence program. The McCain-Palin campaign echoed the charge in a press release it distributed Monday, concurrent with Palin’s legal filing. “Mr. Monegan persisted in planning to make the unauthorized lobbying trip to D.C.,” the release stated. But the governor’s staff authorized the trip, according to an internal travel document from the Department of Public Safety, released Friday in response to an open records request.

Dumbf*ck city: McCain on U.S. economy: from ‘strong’ to ‘total crisis’ in 36 hours 17 Sep 2008
Early this week, as the American financial system absorbed one of its biggest shocks in generations, Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were “strong.” Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers, whom he described as the backbone of the economy, were productive and resilient. By Tuesday he was calling the economic situation “a total crisis” and denouncing “greed” on Wall Street and in Washington. Meantime, he moved from adamant opposition to resigned acceptance of the big government bailouts.

McCain Plays the Race Card By Karen Tumulty 18 Sep 2008
When politicians interject race into a campaign, they seldom do it directly. Consider McCain’s new ad, which the campaign says it will be airing nationally. This is hardly subtle: Sinister images of two black men, followed by one of a vulnerable-looking elderly white woman.

Janis L. Karpinski | Palin Can Launch Us Back in Time

Janis L. Karpinski, Truthout: “Hmmmmm. My intuition is kicking into high gear on the nomination of Sarah Palin as vice president on the Republican ticket. Hmmmmm. It is haunting me. There is something sneaky behind her and me thinks it is the devious orchestration of Karl Rove. Months of criticism for Barack Obama’s allegedly short supply of expertise, then McCain selects a true novice as a partner on his ticket. Does this make any sense at all?”
Oliver Burkeman | A Spaniard in the Works

Oliver Burkeman, The Guardian UK: “Does John McCain know that Zapatero is the Spanish prime minister, and that Spain is in Europe? You’ll have to decide for yourself whether the painful interview above, which John McCain gave yesterday to a Spanish journalist in Florida, really does seem to indicate that he didn’t know that Jose Luis Zapatero is the prime minister of Spain, and that he perhaps even thinks Spain might be in Latin America.”
