Bolivia’s Morales emerges stronger from crisis
Eduardo Garcia, Wed Sep 17, 2008
LA PAZ (Reuters) – Bolivia’s first indigenous president, leftist Evo Morales, has deftly handled a violent political crisis and appears strengthened as he heads into talks with opposition governors who resist his socialist reforms.

Agreement between CONALCAM and COB
Agreement signed on September 17 by the organisations that make up the National Coalition for Change (indigenous, peasant, urban and social movements) and the Bolivian Workers Centre (COB). Present during the meeting were Evo Morales and a number of ministers and heads of state institutions.

The real face of the Bolivian opposition

Crisis in Bolivia
Paul Kellogg, Tuesday, September 16, 2008
Thursday Sept. 11, at least 30 people – supporters of president Evo Morales – were killed in the northern department of Pando, victims of right-wing inspired violence. “We were unarmed” said one survivor of the 1,000-strong peasant march which was the target of the attack. “They stopped us some seven kilometers before Porvenir and afterwards they attacked us when we reached the bridge, where they ambushed us and began to shoot with automatic machine-guns.” The massacre was “executed by civilian groups who’d received weapons training by the government of Leopoldo Fernández.”

Bolivia: Fascism Seizes Power – Morales Complains
By James Petras
If there is one lesson that Morales can learn from the peasants who have been degraded and horsewhipped in the streets of Santa Cruz, the trade unionists who have been burned out of their headquarters and homes in Pando and the street vendors who have been driven from the markets in Tarija, is that you cannot ‘make deals’ with fascists. You don’t defeat fascism through elections and concessions to their big property-owning paymasters.

Bolivia Versus the Empire
Morales Sí, Secession No
By Patrick Irelan
Evo Morales is a patient man. After he was elected president of Bolivia in 2005, he set about in a peaceful and democratic way to liberate his country’s oppressed majority. That majority includes indigenous South American Indians, who make up over 55 percent of the population, plus a large proportion of the country’s mestizos, who constitute a total of 30 percent of the population. Morales himself is an Aymara Indian, the first indigenous president in the history of Bolivia. The remaining 15 percent of the population is as white as the faces you recently saw at the Republican National Convention.

Local Indigenous Leaders Beaten and Publicly Humiliated:
Bolivia may have its first-ever indigenous president, but racism is alive and well in this country, as demonstrated by the public humiliation of a group of around 50 indigenous mayors, town councillors and community leaders in the south-central city of Sucre.
