DAKAR, Senegal (PANA) – The World Food Programme (WFP) said it would…Friday distribute food to 160,000 people who fled to West Point near Monrovia to escape renewed fighting which broke out in the Liberian capital…April 6.

In a news release faxed to PANA in Dakar, the United Nations food aid agency said it would…take food to Congo Town on the outskirts of Monrovia where another group of displaced persons are being sheltered.

…Thursday, according to the news release, WFP distributed 185 tons of emergency food rations to some 30,000 Liberian war-displaced people at VOA camp outside Monrovia.

“This is the first time aid workers have reached the camp since renewed fighting erupted in the Liberian capital April 6,” said the WFP.

…Wednesday, the WFP had distributed one-month rations totalling 188 tons to more than 27,500 displaced people at another camp, known as MVTC.

WFP said Friday said…between last weekend and Thursday, some 500 tons of emergency rations had been distributed to 100,000 needy people around the Liberian capital.

Fighting erupted in Monrovia two weeks ago amid attempts to arrest one of the faction leaders, Gen. Roosevelt Johnson, for alleged murder.

He and his combatants are entrenched in a training military base with several hundreds of hostages, including Lebanese diplomats.
