| ## author : theearthtime@igc.apc.org ## date : 29.10.95 Liberia’s temporary head of government, Wilton Sankawulo, asked UN member states Monday to respond positively at a pledging conference to be held to meet his war torn nation’s needs. “Peace is at our door. I hope we will get some money in order to begin the disarmament process,” Sankawulo said. “I am in no position to tell you how much money we will get. We have gotten in touch with many, many nations and their leaders and they have told us they are going to be there and they will help us.” The conference will be held Friday. Sankawulo said the pledging conference will be conducted by the UN Secretary General, the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, and himself. Sankawulo is chair of the Council of State of the Liberian National Transition Government. the council is made up of leaders of the previously warring factions. Sankawulo thanked all who helped Liberia, especially the members of the Economic Community of West African States who supplied troops that brought an end to the civil war. The chairman said the needs of this 173-year-old independent nation, and UN charter member, were boundless. “We need electricity. We need to rebuild our schools. We need water systems all over the place. We need transport and hospitals need to be rebuilt and we need medical supplies, not only for combatants but for all of us.” |
